Malls, ugh

Spent 4 hours yesterday traipsing around one mall and another five today slugging our way through the Mall of America to find daughter dresses for her upcoming bat mitzvah.  FINALLY found something she's willing to wear (the majority of dresses, according to her 'looked like a tornado threw up on them') and weren't cut in a way to turn a 13 year old into a street walker.

What is with stores blasting music to the point you can't even browse without going deaf?   *sigh*

Two gorgeous dresses bought (this one and this one), one shrug and one pair of shoes and my wallet's quite a bit lighter.  But, most importantly, it is done so at least that's something I can cross off my list.  Like my sanity.

there's a self-proclaimed vampire that runs for various local positions here- his slogan is 'I can't suck worse than the other guy' (or so-and-so if there's an incumbent running)

in a completely scary way. he's run for stuff for years. never wins anything of course

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-10-14 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't imagine he ever would win, sadly.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-14 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
the fact he had no real opinions on anything might have had something to do with that though

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-10-14 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, yeah, that probably wouldn't help.

the local paper always puts out an election issue each year with the various candidates of all the parties (even the made up ones) and whatever 200 word essay they want printed next to their name and where they stand on the various issues, etc. It's always a fun read for the 'minor' parties' candidates, I'm not sure but I think people make up their party name sometimes

Your elections sound far more entertaining than ours.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-14 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but the results are a wrestler for governor and a comedian running for senate

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-10-14 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I see where the problem might lie.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-14 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
or voting because of what someone IS vs what they stand for. Which is sort of what the presidential election has turned into. Here we had a muslim running for congress (and he won) but I didn't care about the religion, I wanted to know what he stood for, what his opinions on the issues were and I couldn't find that out. The entire campaign was over the fact he was black and a muslim and wasn't that either great or horrendous.

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-10-14 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
That's kind of ridiculous. And totally what the general election has turned into.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-14 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I refuse to vote for someone who isn't pro-choice. I don't care what else they say or claim they'll do, if they don't honor a woman's right to choose they won't get my vote. And I couldn't find ANYWHERE that pinned down Ellison's opinion on the matter. It really annoyed me.

But it's elections these days. Yell at us about how evil the other guy is but don't give us specifics about themselves. It's stupid. How can we make an informed decision?

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-10-14 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here. It's what finally helped me decide who to pick for governor.

It's kind of just turned into a popularity contest, anymore.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-14 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
either popularity or a case of 'if you do (or don't) vote for X you're a _____" (bigot, sexist, racist, etc)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-15 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
pity politics are never actually about the issues or anything like that

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-15 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder, sometimes, what the "founding fathers" would think of American politics today

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-10-15 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
They'd probably want to move back to Europe.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-15 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
then again, they set it up as only those owning land could vote and not slaves or women and made sure it was a representative democracy instead of a true one so maybe they'd be fine with it

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-15 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
we can dream though, can't we? of a day the elections actually about issues and not smear campaigns

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-10-15 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, we can definitely dream.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-10-15 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
add donuts and a good cup of coffee and I think it'd be a little slice of heaven
