Random Post of Randomness

1) Just in case LJ goes poof I created an account over at IJ with the oh so original name, donutsweeper.  I friended a few people whose IJ's I knew, but if I missed you please drop me a note so I can friend you.  I don't plan on using the journal unless LJ does disappear, but I really don't want to lose my friends.

2) Today, instead of sitting in a staff meeting today I was home playing solitare on my (at the time) internetless computer.  A much better way to spend my time I think.

You're right, April was the old one, good memory! Pidge is my new one, and she's an ultracompact EeePC and runs a Linux OS. They made the EeePCs really easy to use... unless you want to do any customizing or update any software. Then you have to know Linux, which I don't, and learning on my own hasn't been easy, the forums are not very n00b friendly.

So basically, if there's software I can't use on Pidge, it's because a) there's not a version for Linux or b) there is a version for Linux but I don't know how to install it (or how to install an update). I can't even install Firefox 3.0, which I think is why I can't use Read It Later.

::shrug:: It's not a very common problem. Semagic was wonderful on my PC!

oh that's too bad that people aren't willing to help you figure out Pidge. I hate people who act like that

Oh, it's not so much that people are actively unfriendly, I just find the forums intimidating because they use a lot of Linux geek-speak I can't follow, and it's not an atmosphere where people easily speak up and say "Could you tell me step-by-step in language your 70-year-old PC using Aunt Mildred would understand?" What I need to do is buy a book. Ooh. ::adds to list::

maybe the library has a 'linux for dummies' book?

That's kind of what I was thinking. I've been thinking about it for months and keep forgetting! Though with as long as it takes for me to get around to reading these days, I'd probably do better to find a cheap used copy on Amazon Marketplace or something.
