Random Post of Randomness

1) Just in case LJ goes poof I created an account over at IJ with the oh so original name, donutsweeper.  I friended a few people whose IJ's I knew, but if I missed you please drop me a note so I can friend you.  I don't plan on using the journal unless LJ does disappear, but I really don't want to lose my friends.

2) Today, instead of sitting in a staff meeting today I was home playing solitare on my (at the time) internetless computer.  A much better way to spend my time I think.

I've had _medley_ over there for a good while, although I don't actually use it except for very occasional RP. Had to have underscrores again, drat. If IJ goes splat, I'll start using it. *nods*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent. I'll add you.

I *hope* this is all unneccessary and LJ stays happy and working fine

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2009-01-06 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I hope so, too. I think it'll probably be OK. *crosses things* IJ's not hard to use, though, if worst comes to worst.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
new reports seem to imply the firings weren't as bad and whatnot.

I did run an ljarchive again just to be safe (backup=good)

I just loathe the idea of finding new comms and people and whatnot at IJ. *crosses things too*

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Added you both. I got me an IJ around this time LAST year. Rarely use it though as it's only there as backup.

So how do I archive my LJ stuff again? I have my fic on my website/hard drive but what about backing up my posts?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
it depends on what operating system you use I used
http://community.livejournal.com/ljarchive/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ljarchive
it saves posts and comments

but there are other ways too

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Cheers. Will have to download later, is taking forever. I wonder why? *g*

[identity profile] snufflesdbear.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I've been on IJ for more than awhile. I am sylumgator and have friended you. Now, get Semagic, and you can post to both journals at the same time. A lot of time at the library I can only access IJ, and not LJ.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
my internet is wonky.

newest info about it is that LJ's not going anywhere, but an archive can't hurt in my opinion

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Semagic? What is it and how does it work?

[identity profile] adafrog.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
1- I'm adafrog over there, as well.
2-awesome.

[identity profile] snufflesdbear.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
crap. I was afraid you would ask that :-) here, best place in thier LJ site
http://community.livejournal.com/ljwin32_sema/
The trick is to get it to talk to both journal's at once. I need to look up my notes on that. I'll get back to you, okay? :-)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2009-01-07 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, I wonder. LJ panic, ahoy. *g* That's a good program, though. Very very easy to use. And gives you some fun stats. Most-used words, that kind of thing.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2009-01-07 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I love LJArchive. And yeah, every time there's drama, I do backups. It's a good system. *g*

[identity profile] snufflesdbear.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, check out maybe my links. Stewardess gets lots of good info, http://asylums.insanejournal.com/07refugees/ is a place to join for more info.
http://asylums.insanejournal.com/announcements/ for official announcements from Squeaky himself.
ahhhh.... here goes.... http://www.greatestjournal.com/users/snapetoy/16797.html

NOTE: at #2 IIRC, it's username+IJ (LJ, etc)

"Most of us are using the same username across the LJ clones (GJ, IJ, JF and others). Because we're using the same username, we think that we only have one login when Semagic starts - it opens at the login screen with our username, and then we're manually changing the server to post to in from the File menu under Server settings.

Friends, this is not so! We can set up multiple logins with the same username!

1/ Log out of Semagic
2/ At the login screen, in the username field type username lj. Now put in your LJ password into the password field. Don't hit enter or click Login yet!
3/ Tick both the boxes for Remember Password and Auto-Login.
4/ Click the File menu and then Server settings.
5/ Make sure www.livejournal.com is selected as the server. Click OK.
6/ Click Login.

Now repeat steps 1 - 6 with your other journals, replacing username lj with username clone-abbreviation and the Server settings with the clone address.

You'll find that at your Login screen, you'll now have multiple login options. :)

For example, mine are:
- snapetoy lj - www.livejournal.com
- snapetoy gj - www.greatestjournal.com
- snapetoy jf - www.journalfen.net
- snapetoy ij - www.insanejournal.com

I've deliberately chosen to include LJ in that list, as I may end up defaulting to another journal service, so I didn't want to prefer LJ.

The latest build of Semagic allows you to Post to Multiple Journals from the Journal menu. Ticky box the ones you want to post to!"

I wouldn't normally post all that, but with GreatestJournal, you never know how long they will be around for, you know? I got the link off the User Info area of the 07refugees.

If you have problems, give me a yowl.

keeping the same name is so much easier!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'll bookmark it to read it later when comcast isnt messing with my internet. Thanks!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
thanks for digging up all that info!

[identity profile] snufflesdbear.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't dig, I stumbled. Literally. People think I am Ianto, I am more...um... Owen? Things just sort of fall into place sometimes.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
sometimes it's all about being in the right place at the right time. *nods*

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I heart Semagic. I wish I could use it on the computer I have now. Not only was it good for posting to more than one journal site at once, but I could be logged in to one LJ on my browser and another in Semagic and I could edit things that way.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Why won't it work on your new computer? (I forget its name, sorry, April was the old one, yes?)

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I was just thinking yesterday that YAY you don't have to be at work today. :)

Have added you on IJ - it's good to have a backup plan in any case!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
So happy not to be there. So very happy. I loved a lot of the aspect of it, but overall the chaos and wank just wore me down.

I shall go add you, although it looks like LJ's here to stay so it'll all be unnecessary *crosses fingers and knows wood*

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
You're right, April was the old one, good memory! Pidge is my new one, and she's an ultracompact EeePC and runs a Linux OS. They made the EeePCs really easy to use... unless you want to do any customizing or update any software. Then you have to know Linux, which I don't, and learning on my own hasn't been easy, the forums are not very n00b friendly.

So basically, if there's software I can't use on Pidge, it's because a) there's not a version for Linux or b) there is a version for Linux but I don't know how to install it (or how to install an update). I can't even install Firefox 3.0, which I think is why I can't use Read It Later.

::shrug:: It's not a very common problem. Semagic was wonderful on my PC!
