Babble on POVs

Just a question, and I'm not sure of the correct terminology here, but when reading (or writing), do you prefer a tight 3rd person POV  (where all events are seen and interpreted through one character's eyes) or switching between people's 3rd person POV with obvious page breaks or markers to show the new POV?

For example- my entire Charming the Pants off the Pashahads SGA/Jack crossover is told from Sheppard's POV, there is no scene where we see what Jack thinks about falling into the Pegasus Galaxy.  At points there are Sheppard's interpretation of Jack's actions (he notices a hedged answer, an avoided question, but doesn't know why Jack  answered that way).  If it had been written with switching POV's there could be the scene from Shep's perspective, noticing what he notices and wondering about it, followed by the same scene retold from Jack's, where he explained the reasons for saying what he did.  There also could have been scenes left out from the story the way I told it- I never did explain how Jack managed to get his hands on the Pashahads (because Sheppard wasn't there and wouldn't know).

I've been noticing more and more of the latter showing up in stories lately.  Presuming this babble actually makes sense to anyone, do you notice the difference between those types of POV styles and do you like one more than the other?

Yus. But I did get about 60% of the paper done today, so I'm rather happy. Now I just need to do the remaining 40%, get started on the stuff for next week and work on the portfolio and I'll be just fine.

My brain kinda felt like going on strike for a while there.

Yay! And now I have a choice between working on the portfolio, watching Leverage and going to bed. Though it's a bit too early for the last one...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
This week's Leverage is pretty good... but far be it from me to encourage someone putting off their homework...

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, you watch Leverage? I have a lot of catching up to do, the last episode I watched was 02.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You've only seen the first two?

Let's see the pilot was great, then was the one with the vets, which was pretty good, then a horse one, then the one with the priest, the bank and then the most recent- so there's 4 you haven't seen yet. I loved x04 and x05. But they're all good. I love how the crazy little team has become a real family

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I adore the team. And I have all four episodes, I just haven't watched them yet. I'm planning on doing that this weekend, since I have too much stuff for college to do to go visit the BF... Might as well make the best of it.

very smart thinking and a good use of your time!

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I thought, too. I'm thinking of making some Leverage icons, too.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
also an excellent idea! You are a smart one

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
will they mostly be of Elliot or of the whole team?

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
There'll probably be a lot of Eliot and some of the rest of the team, too. I love them all, but I love Eliot most of all. I mean. Chris Kane. Mhmm.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish he'd cut his hair. I just have trouble with guys with long hair like that

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll admit that I liked him much better with short hair, too (see icon!), but. I still love the guy, I can't help it. 's his voice, I think.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, he used to have shorter hair. What is the icon from?

I love the way Eliot is with his gun skills on Leverage. Identifying the different gun shots with a shrug, like anyone should be able to

Angel. I never watched it, but I love the way he looks there. well, and I've seen clips. And I ship Angel/Lindsey (Lindsey being Christian Kane's character, naturally). He plays an evil lawyer who's having trouble staying evil. Hmmmm.

Am I the only one who thinks a class on Roman law would be very, very cool? :-)

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a big fan of history... There are some cool things about it, but mostly, it's just too big a course crammed into a too short period of time with too much stuff to do and... Well. The Romans are mad, they are :D

[identity profile] tejas.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Man, I *love* history. I looked into getting a Master's in historical legal systems. :-)

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
...Historical legal systems?

I just started studying European Law. Guess it's kinda similar, 'cept that I'm not doing as much historical stuff. Only one month of it, atm. Which is not enough to work through >2000 years of history >>;

[identity profile] tejas.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Now *that* would be hellish. I think the program I looked at had a whole semester on Roman law and maybe two on English law.

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a bit... short for that amount of time, yeah. Usually, we get two months per course, but not this time. Silly.

Ah, well, you can do it.

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, I'm just whining. It's not all that bad, really. (Though I found out today that I like going legal research much better than researching general historical facts.)
