Author's Note: Written superfast for the Timestamp Meme as requested by rustydog who wanted an hour before The Furry Doorstop.  Un-beta'ed.  Due South/ Torchwood crossover.

Jack stood barefoot by the stove, starting breakfast while Benton slept. He’d slipped his trousers on, but the braces were hanging loose.  Reaching down to scratch Diefenbaker behind the ear, he turned to make sure the wolf could read his lips.

“You’re looking good, Dief.” 

Diefenbaker leaned into the scratch, wagging his tail.

“Benton seems to be doing well in Chicago.  He’s certainly happier than I’d expected him to be.  Although, I imagine he’s still getting into trouble now and again.”

The wolf huffed in response.

“But you’re looking out for him, right?”  Jack smiled.  “Course you are.  Good boy.”

Squeee! Lip reading. I'd almost forgotten. You've got the doggy/wolfy mannerisms down so well. (I realized that when I thought before even finishing, "::sniff:: I want a dog.") I could hear his tail thumping on the floor.

You inspired me to go icon hunting. If I can't have a real dog right now, I can at least have a wolf icon! Except, I'm now reminded that all of the animals who played Diefenbaker were 0% wolf. Of all things, *that's* where my disbelief refuses to be suspended. But that's okay. :)

Dief is Fraser's wolf. He is deaf, having lost his hearing when he jumped into a frozen lake to save Fraser a year or two before the show started.

I think it was the braces that confused me. I obviously felt he wouldn't be pulling them up anyway unless he had a shirt to pull them up over.

What I meant was, the fact that he'd left them hanging meant he'd thought about pulling them up but didn't because he didn't have a T-shirt on.

Which sounds pretty stupid spelled out but that's the way my brain works, apparently.
