I just... how the American Life League determined Krispy Kreme was pro-choice by giving away donuts on Inauguration day (like they did on election day) just confuses me.
The American Life League says they're in favour of freedom, but they want to determine exactly which choices I'm free to make. At least I *think* that's what the article said.
I'm a bit disappointed in Reuters as well - I thought they had a reputation as a neutral reporting source, but the headline alone was a giveaway as to which side they're on.
I suppose as a journalist I could have said: "American Life League declares Krispy Kreme to be pro-abortion", as a statement of fact, while trying not to take sides.
I've lost all respect for Reuters. That wasn't a news story, that was an ad for the American Life League. You put your name on it, you've got to be more careful. ::grr:: Don't get me started...
Good lord! I'm really boggled at the whole thing. It almost reads like a parody of anti-choice mentality. (I never, ever, ever call them pro-life, that gives them half a victory anyway. They are not pro-anything. They are only against the rights of women.)
They are not pro-anything. They are only against the rights of women.
Some of "us" don't see it that way at all. I personally believe that a woman has a right to choose what happens to her body. But I also believe that an unborn child is not part of the woman's body. The child deserves the chance to live--thus the "pro-life" label. If a woman doesn't want a child, then that's her choice too--there are many methods of birth control available.
Of course things can get a whole lot more ethically confusing when it comes to things like rape, or issues that might endanger the health of the mother. But most abortions in our country are performed as a matter of convenience for the mother. If you don't see a fetus as a human being, you wouldn't have a problem with this. I do see it that way, and therefore I have a problem with it.
I don't think that expecting women to realize that their actions have consequences, and wanting them to take some responsibility, means that I'm against women's rights.
ETA: The "pro-abortion" donut kerfuffle is ridiculous, however.
See, it's when anyone is blanket anything that bothers me- no abortion even if the pregnancy is a result of rape, or an ectopic pregnancy where both the mother's and baby's life is in danger and then there's also no thought given to providing prenatal and perinatal care or how to help the mom if she lives through it all and has the kid... that's when I think it's more about the rights of women- to have a safe choice and choice they can actually live with
.... I don't even know what to say.... I just.... it's a freakin' free donut to celebrate the inaguration of a new president. Taking a free donut and turning it into a political statement is insane.

Also I thought they were very blurry with what sections were quotes from the American Life League and what was their editorial opinion.
