Words fail me.

I'm sticking to Green and Blacks chocolate.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I just... how the American Life League determined Krispy Kreme was pro-choice by giving away donuts on Inauguration day (like they did on election day) just confuses me.

Green and Blacks is a good idea

[identity profile] k-haldane.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
The American Life League says they're in favour of freedom, but they want to determine exactly which choices I'm free to make. At least I *think* that's what the article said.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
yes, freedom to do exactly as I say. I'm just still in awe of their interpretation of Krispy Kreme's original statement

[identity profile] k-haldane.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a bit disappointed in Reuters as well - I thought they had a reputation as a neutral reporting source, but the headline alone was a giveaway as to which side they're on.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
You know, that's a very good point. Although, while I'm not a journalist, I'd be hard pressed to come up with a neutral way of reporting that.

[identity profile] k-haldane.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose you can use the name that most of the 'pro' group use for themselves, and say "pro-choice" instead of "pro-abortion".

Also I thought they were very blurry with what sections were quotes from the American Life League and what was their editorial opinion.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's interesting- to compare when pro-life, pro-choice, anti-live, pro-abortion is used

in this case though the American Life League used the term pro-abortion
http://www.all.org/article.php?id=11754

[identity profile] k-haldane.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose as a journalist I could have said: "American Life League declares Krispy Kreme to be pro-abortion", as a statement of fact, while trying not to take sides.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, that would have been a lot more presenting the facts as opposed to pushing one side over the other

[identity profile] snakewhissperer.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't know the word 'choice was restricted at this point. Gee, shows what I know.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
silly us

[identity profile] thaddeusfavour.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I've lost all respect for Reuters. That wasn't a news story, that was an ad for the American Life League. You put your name on it, you've got to be more careful. ::grr:: Don't get me started...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of the news companies have put it out, but yeah, come on Reuters, remember journalistic integrity?

[identity profile] thaddeusfavour.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Well, okay. To be honest, I don't have much respect for ANY news companies these days.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
I try to pretend they're still the stand up companies of days gone by, but.... yeah. With you on that one

[identity profile] karaokegal.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Good lord! I'm really boggled at the whole thing. It almost reads like a parody of anti-choice mentality. (I never, ever, ever call them pro-life, that gives them half a victory anyway. They are not pro-anything. They are only against the rights of women.)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
I actually thought it was a parody when I first read it.

(I never, ever, ever call them pro-life, that gives them half a victory anyway. They are not pro-anything. They are only against the rights of women.)

SO MUCH YES.

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
They are not pro-anything. They are only against the rights of women.

Some of "us" don't see it that way at all. I personally believe that a woman has a right to choose what happens to her body. But I also believe that an unborn child is not part of the woman's body. The child deserves the chance to live--thus the "pro-life" label. If a woman doesn't want a child, then that's her choice too--there are many methods of birth control available.

Of course things can get a whole lot more ethically confusing when it comes to things like rape, or issues that might endanger the health of the mother. But most abortions in our country are performed as a matter of convenience for the mother. If you don't see a fetus as a human being, you wouldn't have a problem with this. I do see it that way, and therefore I have a problem with it.

I don't think that expecting women to realize that their actions have consequences, and wanting them to take some responsibility, means that I'm against women's rights.

ETA: The "pro-abortion" donut kerfuffle is ridiculous, however.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
See, it's when anyone is blanket anything that bothers me- no abortion even if the pregnancy is a result of rape, or an ectopic pregnancy where both the mother's and baby's life is in danger and then there's also no thought given to providing prenatal and perinatal care or how to help the mom if she lives through it all and has the kid... that's when I think it's more about the rights of women- to have a safe choice and choice they can actually live with

[identity profile] cold-ember-32.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
.... I don't even know what to say.... I just.... it's a freakin' free donut to celebrate the inaguration of a new president. Taking a free donut and turning it into a political statement is insane.

It's a donut!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
a DONUT. and a FREE DONUT. *sighs at the lack of Krispy Kremes nearby*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-17 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
pretty much my reaction. Just how it got from point A to point B

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I personally felt like they meant our freedom to choose a better president, but, hey, apparently I'm using that phrase wrong.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
the whole thing's just ODD

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Especially considering it's coming from what's supposed to be such a reputable news source.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
it's all over the news. The American Life League bit is directly from a bulletin they released. It's just weird

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just interested in the "free donut" part at this point.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Amen to that. Bloody stupid krispy kreme shutting their stores in MN

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, I have to work that day, so I don't think there's any chance I'll get to the one store they have near me.

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
It really is. At least I get to watch the inauguration (assuming I actually get up, of course).

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a terrible person, but I'm probably going to skip it. Consciousness and all that

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-18 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know what you mean. It's horribly early. I'm going to try, though. We'll see.
