Because kids without books is a sad thing....
A friend of mine here on LJ,
rustydog, had a tornado rip though her hometown. There was a lot of damage and the middle school was condemned as a result. The students have been split up to finish off the school year and they way things have wound up the sixth graders no longer have a library. A few of the teachers have brought in some books from home, but in general, for the rest of this year (and possibly next year as well) they will have few, if any, books at their disposal.
rustydog has been trying to find books she can donate to the school. If you happen to have any to donate and live in the US media mail is a very cheap way to send books (I just mailed 32 pounds of books to her for under $14) or, if you'd like, the school has also set up an amazon wish list.
All the information about this can be found in her post here.

Must spread the word tomorrow - right now I cannot type straight.

Amazon isn't the devil incarnate, but not my favorite people at the moment. Kids without books just makes me so sad. My munchkins put together a box with something like 75 of their old books, most in excellent condition, to send off. I might do Amazon too, if I can.

Parcelling up old books to ship from here isn't really doable.

I'm thinking I should hit up the Half-Priced Bookstore down the street and see if I can find some stuff from that list.

I'll keep that in mind every time I go to Half-Price, too, because then I could buy one or two each time.
