Because kids without books is a sad thing....

A friend of mine here on LJ,[livejournal.com profile] rustydog, had a tornado rip though her hometown. There was a lot of damage and the middle school was condemned as a result. The students have been split up to finish off the school year and they way things have wound up the sixth graders no longer have a library. A few of the teachers have brought in some books from home, but in general, for the rest of this year (and possibly next year as well) they will have few, if any, books at their disposal.

[livejournal.com profile] rustydog has been trying to find books she can donate to the school. If you happen to have any to donate and live in the US media mail is a very cheap way to send books (I just mailed 32 pounds of books to her for under $14) or, if you'd like, the school has also set up an amazon wish list.

All the information about this can be found in her post here.

I useded Amazon - I am still cross with them for the snafu but kids without books is NOT a good thing.
Must spread the word tomorrow - right now I cannot type straight.

YAY you! *hugs*

Amazon isn't the devil incarnate, but not my favorite people at the moment. Kids without books just makes me so sad. My munchkins put together a box with something like 75 of their old books, most in excellent condition, to send off. I might do Amazon too, if I can.

That was wonderful of your kids! Make sure you tell them that they are all sorts of AWESOME for doing that from me?

Parcelling up old books to ship from here isn't really doable.

I shall! We usually go through old books every few years to donate them to a battered women's shelter here, but the kids, daughter in particular, were very taken with the idea of sending them off to Rusty.

:) No, you shipping books isn't really feasible!

Whoah! Tornado? EEEEK! I see them on TV, but this is my first experience of knowing anyone who's actually experienced it, even tangentially. (Give me a good old California earthquake any time.)

I've been through hurricanes, but somehow tornadoes seems scarier. Which doesn't make any sense. *shrugs*

I bought the school's wish list (mostly) and added in a few books; they were light on Science Fiction.

Oh that is EXCELLENT! Thank you!

my pleasure! This is how I like to give charity. Directly to the people who need it.

Dang. I have a whole plastic tote full of kids books...at my parents' house.

I'm thinking I should hit up the Half-Priced Bookstore down the street and see if I can find some stuff from that list.

Oh no worries. And depending how things go, they might be with or without books again next school year so next time you go home you could grab them and send them then if it turns out the middle school will still be split up next year.

Alright.

I'll keep that in mind every time I go to Half-Price, too, because then I could buy one or two each time.

It was almost bizarre how happy it made me to buy the books I sent Rusty. I may have to buy more.

Isn't is great to send books? We (the kids and I) lugged this huge box to the post office with the hugest grin on our faces.
