Their current top rating drama is L&O:SVU which has been coming in around 40th. The Jay Leno show isn't getting great rating either. NBC is running their network into the ground.
There's a lot of talk that the cancellation has to do with one of the main characters being gay and the fact that the show was going to show more of his background and life.
Why is it that all the promising shows with decent possibilities of decent storylines involving gay characters get slaughtered?? We saw it with Kings, too. A major player was gay and he was set up to be in a very interesting position, but they shut it down. Fast.
ARGH. And the token Lesbian on Heroes is a decent character, but fulfilling every bad stereotype about lesbians that exist.
I know! The big rough training officer cop (played by Micheal Cudlitz- he's in my icon, Ben from the OC's partner) was gay and just presented as a part of who he was, nothing more than that. Very subtle and just a facet of his personality. I *loved* that it wasn't the sterotypical 'gay' character but a kick your ass strong guy instead.
I really hope their ratings continue to slide. John Wells (producer of Southland) is supposedly going to see if any cable networks will take it, but it's unlikely.
If it weren't for the fact that they have Heroes and SVU I wouldn't watch them at all. And in fact, I tend not to watch SVU until it's replayed on USA in marathons. Not a show I need to catch every week.
They'd pushed back the premiere to Oct 23rd because NBC claimed they didn't want it to start up against Dollhouse and SGU and some of the other highly hyped shows of this season and that way they could promo the heck out of it and it would stand out because it was starting later. They already have 6 episodes of this season in the can and were working on the 7th when the news of its cancellation was released with NO explanation whatsoever.
