Crap

Southland's been canceled. It's unlikely any of this season's episodes will air.

NBC is *so* stupid.

They really are proving to be idiots. I didn't watch Southland, but that's two promising shows in ONE YEAR that they've shut down before even giving them a chance.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-09 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Their current top rating drama is L&O:SVU which has been coming in around 40th. The Jay Leno show isn't getting great rating either. NBC is running their network into the ground.

There's a lot of talk that the cancellation has to do with one of the main characters being gay and the fact that the show was going to show more of his background and life.

GOD DAMN IT!!

Why is it that all the promising shows with decent possibilities of decent storylines involving gay characters get slaughtered?? We saw it with Kings, too. A major player was gay and he was set up to be in a very interesting position, but they shut it down. Fast.

ARGH. And the token Lesbian on Heroes is a decent character, but fulfilling every bad stereotype about lesbians that exist.

I know! The big rough training officer cop (played by Micheal Cudlitz- he's in my icon, Ben from the OC's partner) was gay and just presented as a part of who he was, nothing more than that. Very subtle and just a facet of his personality. I *loved* that it wasn't the sterotypical 'gay' character but a kick your ass strong guy instead.

Fucking asshole execs.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-09 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I really hope their ratings continue to slide. John Wells (producer of Southland) is supposedly going to see if any cable networks will take it, but it's unlikely.

I'm very pissed at NBC at the moment.

If it weren't for the fact that they have Heroes and SVU I wouldn't watch them at all. And in fact, I tend not to watch SVU until it's replayed on USA in marathons. Not a show I need to catch every week.

But yeah, NBC are douchebags.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-09 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
even worse they're dumb douchebags. Southland had actually done really well with that all important 18-35 male group that advertisers love.

And they still relegated it to the death spot? and then didn't even give it a chance there?

Assholes.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-09 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
They'd pushed back the premiere to Oct 23rd because NBC claimed they didn't want it to start up against Dollhouse and SGU and some of the other highly hyped shows of this season and that way they could promo the heck out of it and it would stand out because it was starting later. They already have 6 episodes of this season in the can and were working on the 7th when the news of its cancellation was released with NO explanation whatsoever.

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2009-10-09 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, man, I'm sorry. I know you really liked that one, and it sounded like a very good show.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-09 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
*sigh* yeah, I'm rather bummed. It was so random too.

Oh well. Maybe something else good will be on. Then again, I could always use the time to try to watch old Who. I only have a couple of hundred of hours to catch up on.

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2009-10-09 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
That's a great thing about classic Who. You can spend years catching up and still have more new things to watch.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-09 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
especially since every so often completely 'new' stuff is released!

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-10-10 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I would love for CBS or someone to pick up the show and make millions off of it, just to show NBC (and, you know, to keep the show alive).

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-10 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Last I heard here's a vague chance TNT will pick it up. CBS is actually doing amazingly well right now. NBC is in the toilet though and this won't help

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-10-11 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
That would be awesome. I think they'd do well on TNT.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-11 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
there's a twitter campaign and a petition (http://twitition.com/n3tvb) and some other attempts to show fans' dismay. The press is not happy with NBC either- a lot of insiders are saying it damages the ability for the network to get projects in the future

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-10-11 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Well, now I've signed the petition.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to sign up with a network that could cut you at any moment without notice.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-11 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
out of 22 hours of primetime programming NBC now airs 7 hours of scripted shows. SEVEN. That's less than the WB which only has 10 hours of primetime programming to start with

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-10-11 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
And they wonder why they're doing so poorly.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-11 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
utterly shocking, right? Their top rated drama right now is L&O:SVU which is in 40th place. FORTIETH!!!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-10-11 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
and they are apparently locked into the Jay Leno show for TWO YEARS. God knows how bad a shape the network will be in by then

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-10-11 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
That's assuming they still have a network by then.
