meme

I've being seeing this meme going around my flist and figured I'd give it a go as I'm trying to get back into the fanfic mindset:

I currently have 90 works posted on AO3. Choose a random number - no peeking! - between 1 (most recently posted/updated) and 90, and I will tell you three random things about that story.

AO3 doesn't have the majority of my fic, my LJ predates it by quite a bit and not only I did not move a lot of my existing stuff over, I do not crosspost most of my shorter things (drabbles, double drabbles and the like) there either, but there's a bunch of stuff, so have at it!

There was a while there when I could crank out drabbles like nobody's business. *sigh* I miss those days. But that's why 90 isn't all of them. In general I mostly write short and it just doesn't seem right to spam AO3 with all sorts of <300 word fic. (Also the DW/TW fandom doesn't seem popular there either, I don't know why)

Anyway, 38 is Quintessence, or The Substance Behind the Perfect Coffee (http://archiveofourown.org/works/469812), the 4th of my barista!Sherlock series.

The barista series started as a kinkmeme fill (and like most of my fills over at [livejournal.com profile] sherlockbbc_fic it was gen, despite it being technically a kinkmeme). It was fun to write, taking all of Sherlock's typical snarkiness and slipping it into a different setting. I hadn't written a lot of AUs before, but this one just seemed to fit so well.

I liked the verse and used it to write several different [livejournal.com profile] watsons_woes prompts/challenges and Quintessence was one of them. The verse is always a challenge because 1) I have to come up with a snazzy vocabulary word for the title (Ratiocination, Veridicality, Conviviality, Quintessence, Legerdemain and Beneficence so far) and 2) I need some sort of coffee/barista issue Sherlock can be dealing with/complaining about/whatever and 3)I have to have some random other plot aspect.

Quintessence got to use the decaf issue which combined a chance for Mycroft and Sherlock sniping at each other and the fact that yes, decaf actually does have caffeine and isn't recommended depending on your blood pressure issues (which distressed a friend of mine to no end) AND got to play with the football/American football snark and how the Holmes brothers use what they already know about a person to read them.

I still like this series a lot and revisit it every so often. :)
