meme
I've being seeing this meme going around my flist and figured I'd give it a go as I'm trying to get back into the fanfic mindset:
I currently have 90 works posted on AO3. Choose a random number - no peeking! - between 1 (most recently posted/updated) and 90, and I will tell you three random things about that story.
AO3 doesn't have the majority of my fic, my LJ predates it by quite a bit and not only I did not move a lot of my existing stuff over, I do not crosspost most of my shorter things (drabbles, double drabbles and the like) there either, but there's a bunch of stuff, so have at it!

Haven is a show that has a convoluted timey-wimey backstory that plays out slowly in dribs and drabs and that's what I was focusing on in my story. I rewatched a BUNCH of episodes, several times to get the little hints here and there to refer to. Despite that (or because of it) it was fun trying to capture the feel of the characters' voices and plan out which plot points to hint out and which to mention when writing this. Having my story end with the canon introduction of the characters I thought just played into the convolutedness of the plot of the show and the two characters in particular.

Things about the work- Jack is always fun to write, for the longest time I would say that Jack was my fandom because 90% of what I wrote was Doctor Who, Torchwood or crossovers with him in it. This story takes place in the !verse I created with the first crossover I ever wrote and so it always has a special place in my heart for that. This particular story came to be as a combination of needing something for

Mag7 is an unusual fandom for me, I really like the show's set up/characterization/etc, but a lot of the episodes are only so-so and I haven't watched them all despite it being 10 years old. I love the modern AU sandbox that fics get written in just as much, if not more, than the old west canon setting.
Writing in canon for this show is hard, you have to get the true sense of the old west dialog across without having accents written in ways that are annoying and you also have to check on phrases and period facts and things like that. I'm really happy with the way I managed it for this fic though.

This one was a fun one to write, it was a play/poking fun at all the tropes that are so popular in h50 fic: Danny's hair, his car, Steve's recklessness, their inability to fuck anywhere normal. It's a break of the fourth wall (obviously) which is something I loathe to do, but I love the way the fic turned out.

Breaking the fourth wall and undermining tropes are fun.

Teen Wolf is one of those fandoms where I tend to like the fic more than the actual canon. I started watching S2 (the most recent season) and have never gone back to watch all the previous episodes, although I have caught a few here and there. This ficlet focuses on what I like in the fandom- the basic guy just trying to get through the day when there's all sort of weirdness and crap out there. It's not my best work, but as a snapshot of Stiles I think it works pretty well.

Anyway, 13. Hit me with 13.

Someone already asked for 13, would you like to pick another number?

That's an NCIS:LA Yuletide fic, [Bad username or site: http://archiveofourown.org/works/290790 @ livejournal.com], while I wrote as a pinch hit. I've given up on NCIS:LA as a show since then, but I still do like the characters and characterizations I wrote here. G is one of those tough guys, but hiding deep insecurities and wounds, not unlike a lot of characters that tend to wind up as my favorites in fandoms, and was so excited when I saw the request about him on the pinch hit list.
random factoids: I rewatched a lot of episodes for this fic and even thought it was only just over 2k I managed to sneak in references to 5 different episodes.
I used a real life burger place/bar for the place they go for burgers in the fic, but totally made up the specials they order. Messing about with what countries' flags might be used to refer to what had been an American (red, white and blue) minus the tomato (red) was really, really fun.
I'm still really happy with both the pacing and dialog in this fic, which is rare for me. :)

And yet, this little detour, perhaps not totally necessary to the story, really nailed the entire thing for me: Kay arrived then, her tray brimming with their food, extra napkins, ketchup, hot sauce, and beers. G. offered her a shy smile while Sam thanked her. The next few moments were occupied by rearranging the table to their liking, the condiments being used and then pushed up against the wall, napkins set aside for later, and beers moved away from the edge.
I'm not sure why. It just covers so much about men in general, American life and food, these two guys in particular, and the emotional backdrop of the story. I liked it a lot.

Anyway, 38 is Quintessence, or The Substance Behind the Perfect Coffee (http://archiveofourown.org/works/469812), the 4th of my barista!Sherlock series.
The barista series started as a kinkmeme fill (and like most of my fills over at
I liked the verse and used it to write several different
Quintessence got to use the decaf issue which combined a chance for Mycroft and Sherlock sniping at each other and the fact that yes, decaf actually does have caffeine and isn't recommended depending on your blood pressure issues (which distressed a friend of mine to no end) AND got to play with the football/American football snark and how the Holmes brothers use what they already know about a person to read them.
I still like this series a lot and revisit it every so often. :)

Here's a Doctor, There's a Doctor (http://archiveofourown.org/works/13827) is just a silly fic with all the Doctors (well, One through Nine, I wrote it shortly after Ten's first appearance and hadn't gotten a feel for him yet) winding up meeting each other as a result of the Master's interference. (Classic!Who Master, SimmMaster hadn't appeared yet).
It was a weird fic to write, how do you refer to the various incarnations of the same character? I went with nicknames and some were obvious and actually canon (there is some 'name calling' in both 'The Three Doctors' and 'The Five Doctors') but then there's the fact the oldest looking of the Doctors is actually the youngest and other things like that which just make the writing more complicated. It was also hard to try to get the voices right.
Looking back on it now I do shudder a bit at the dialog tags, now I tend towards the more simple 'said' in most cases, then, apparently I did not.

It was an usual show, a man (Jason Isaacs) living two lives at the same time with the result of a car crash that had taken the life of his son or wife differs- the 'red' world, where his son lived and the 'green' world where his wife had. It's a convoluted show and there's almost no fic or fandom, probably for that reason. I didn't think I could do a full story justice, there were just too many subtle aspects, but I wanted to try my hand at a ficlet.
One aspect of the fic I liked was the subtle ties between the two worlds- a car playing a role in both worlds and the shopping and just the confusion of the two existences weighing on him. I'll never write in this fandom again, but I'm glad I did the one time.
