It's Only Castles Burning

Title: It's Only Castles Burning
Pairing/Warning/Rating: None, rated G
Word Count: 100
Summary: The Doctor ponders the price paid to end the Time War
Author's Note: Thanks to [profile] _medley_ for the title.  My first entry into the [profile] paliphrase bronze challenge

It occurred to him that it should matter. It should bother him. There should be some part of him that screamed at the injustice of it all. But he felt nothing.  He just sat in the TARDIS watching it all turn to ash and smoke.

The war was over.  The conflict done.

Finis.

Somewhere a fat lady sang.  Not here.  No one was left to sing here.

Gallifrey was gone.  No more Time Lords.

But the Daleks were exterminated.   Erased from time and space.

Was it an even trade?  His people for the Daleks?

Now there’s just him.

Empty.

Alone.

I still love that to bits, and I'm still happy I threw that title at you. *g*

I still think there's a longer fic for that summary somewhere. I might get to it one of these days if the bunnies behave

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-03-26 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
*vbg* I wouldn't complain. *feeds angst-carrots to bunnies*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I like angst carrots. Angsty plotbunnies are my friends. Cracked out cliche bunnies are the ones to watch out for (see my reply to [livejournal.com profile] mad_jaks below)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-03-26 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw that! I can't decide whether I'm awed or terrified.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It's never going to become something real. Well, probably never. Although April Fool's Day is coming up. But no. It won't let itself become anything other than lines here and there. Not happening. It SHOULDN'T happen.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-03-26 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Riiighhht. Absolutely. *looks innocent*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
just because my bigbang is done and my final version of my finish-a-thon is at beta you people think you can convince me to write anything...

*uses appropriate icon*

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-03-26 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* Oh, yipes, Finish-a-Thon. *runs away*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Why yipes? You have 6 days!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-03-26 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, true. And my stuff either gets written fast or it doesn't get written, so.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
absolutely understand what you mean about that. The crackcliche disaster I wasn't writing is nearly done

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-03-26 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
...I am filled with glee and horror. Mostly glee. I think.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
glee enough to be willing to beta it?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-03-26 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but if my brain melts out my ears, I'm blaming you. *g*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
*grumble* I get blamed for everything...

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-03-26 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
You get blamed for everything you do, yes.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
but, but, but.... the evil club.. they make me....

I came expecting nonsense

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
After your final comment to me last night abot crack!snippets and found this instead. Totally not disappointed though.

Somewhere a fat lady sang. Not here. No one was left to sing here.
That's so Nine - that way he tries to pull the cheeky chappy face and it totally fails and you can see how much he's hurting...

lol- no the cracksnippets refuse to gel together. Seriously, how can your zombie doctor insist you fuck or die with your alt!universe genderswitched twin (who happens to be really experiences due to time spent as a hooker) and not realize the result would be for you wind up with tentacles, wings AND pregnancy, resulting in the need to transmogrification into a male seahorse?

*flaps hand* I have no idea. But it can't be that hard surely?? Personally I'm going to have *more* trouble witing them all at High School than anything else (I went to an all girls boarding school)

Re: I came expecting nonsense

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I doubt I could write the High School AU, due to it just always being suck a horrific plot line. Write them all as whiny fanbrats?

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I might have to write them all as some kind of geeky outcast types - I'm not sure about Ianto but Owen for some reason is coming across as wannabe goth, Tosh is obviously class brain and Gwen's Little Miss Leaveanapplefortheteacher.

And Jack's the one who sleeps with the teachers for the good grades?

Yay for new glasses!

He wouldn't have to - he's actually clever enough to pass all his classes without that He just does it for the thrill. No change there then !

*really goes this time*

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
Ouch! That's gorgeous - in a really, really painful way. I love the way the Doctor is so numb and how that's reflected in every word and in the style and structure of the drabble *bounces*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! :)

[identity profile] pointytilly.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Was it an even trade? His people for the Daleks?

That bit's my favorite line, somehow. I can see him, alone, pondering...and looking cold/aloof while a thousand thoughts bounced through his head amounting to that.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-03-26 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Glad you liked it!

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-03-27 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a lovely extension of that first paragraph. I like the short sentences, sort of choppy, like each of his thoughts is final. It gives it an appropriately somber, thoughtful tone.

thanks, this was a hard one, trying to get the right feel to come across

lovely!

thank you! :)

nice sense of timing controlling him instead of him controlling time right there.

thank you! :)
