TW 2x13- a powerful finale

Overall a terribly powerful episode.  It had some problems, some unexpected solutions and several big bangs.

I'm very glad they made the quick mention of Tosh filling in for Owen for the pig-alien from DW S1.  That was a nice touch by the writers to fix a previous plot problem.

I had assumed Owen was getting the heave-ho in one way or another this episode, but I hadn't expected Tosh to leave too.  Her death shocked me.  And why wasn't there a glowy kiss of life?  Jack hasn't done one all season- have the writers forgotten about it?

Jack's sanity is amazing, and a bit unrealistic.  As is whatever fabrics his coat and shirt and pants are made of, damn it.  Really, after nearly 2000 years in the dirt and Jack's sanity AND clothes are intact?  Rather unlikely.

I *love* the John twist (he's not a twirl mustache crazy bad guy, but being forced to do what he's done)... but was a bit saddened by the Grey one.

I'm confused about Grey calling him "Jack" before skewering him, especially after "Adam" and how they were careful NOT to name him as a kid.  Are we to believe his first name actually IS Jack?

Gwen's performance was excellent- I loved her in the police station taking charge.

I'm a bit confused how the Weevils were 'trained' to take out the people in charge though- did John do that and we just didn't see it?

I'll also admit that in a way I'm glad the season's over.  Although it's unlikely things will calm down much considering DW's starting up immediately, but with luck at least some of the rabid fanwank and shipwarfare will die down.  I'm looking forward to a time I can have a comm other than [profile] torchwood_meta on my Flist and not be overwhelmed by the insanity and backstabbing for in the posts there.

I miss fandom so much. I miss people in fandom. I miss being able to chit-chat and interact and play. I hate, hate, hate stress. I just. GOD I want a break.

Even with DW starting up I think things will calm down- I'm thinking in about 2 or 3 weeks (a week or so after TW airs on BBCA) or, at least I hope.

thank heavens for our f-lists, right?

I think we can assume that Gray calls him Jack because John was the one who found him. He would have passed on the latest name that his brother is being called. Still a plot hole, but hey.

And OMFG, I can't believe they did that to us. Tosh and Owen and OMFG! *screaming at TV*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-04-05 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
possibly. probably even. But it's still a plot hole and it bugs me a smidge.

I'll believe anything they tell me about Jack, but you've got a point on his clothing!

His name, though... Who knows? Possibly John told him that's what he's going by now, but it did sound an awful lot like he was using Jack's childhood name. Co-incidence, maybe? Jack is not an uncommon name, after all.

Also relieved it's over.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-04-05 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
(or the writer forgot Jack's not his name)

I think I'll just curl up in this corner here and die for a while.

And re sanity - perhaps Jack can't go mad either? Or rather, he goes mad but 'resets' when he dies, and wakes up sane again.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-04-05 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know- madness isn't like a bruise that heals, it's a set of experiences and he still remembers the experiences.

I'd read about the Tosh bit, but I REALLY didn't want to believe they were going to go through with that one. I actually yelled "BASTARDS!" really loudly in the on-campus lounge/mini-mart while watching with one of my employees. She laughed at me, for some reason.

The whole Jack thing BUUUUUGGED me. Seriously! No one is going to be THAT sane after being buried for, what, 1,800 year? No one. Not even Jack. I wasn't even paying attention to the clothes at that point, but that's kind of annoying, too. *sigh* Alas...it's TW.

I think this episode showed exactly how much John really does love Jack. I loved him in this one. By the end, I kind of wanted him to join the team (could you imagine that?).

The only thing I can think of that would explain Grey calling him Jack is that he was going by the name John told him...but you'd still think he'd call his own brother by his ACTUAL name.

Apparently they saved all the Gwen love for the last episode, because I think this is the only one I liked her in.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-04-06 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked John a lot this one. Which felt a bit creepy considering KKBB.

and I too actually liked Gwen. *shudder*

Oh hey, did you understand who the scythe wielding crazy people were that Ianto and Tosh killed? They seemed, random.

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's kind of horrifying how easily they can make us like these people.

They did seem kind of random. I never did figure that one out.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
No one's been able to explain them to me. Scythe wielding creepies.. kind of cool in a hopelessly easy to kill way

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
It made for some awesome Tosh and Ianto action.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
absolutely... but bam, bam, bam and *poof* no more bad guys. 'Twas a bit easy a solution in my book. I had suspected them to show up again near the end and attack Owen when he was trying to make things right at the plant

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they definitely could've been a bit more useful to Gray's cause.

[identity profile] essie007.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah the "Jack is sane" thing bugged me too. So ive ret-conned it in my head as hhe was unconcious or dead for most of that 2,000 year period. Maybe because is lungs were completely full of dirt, and his skull, and body was crushed by the pressure he was dying so quickly that he didn't have time to 'be alive.'

It's the only way I can buy it.

I don't think Jack can actually REVIVE people with the "glowy kiss of life," just kinda give them a hit of TARDIS-heart life energy feel good. Tosh didn't need a low level orgasm-thing. I'm sure if she'd asked, Jack would've obliged, but it wouldn't have helped her health at all.

re Jack's name: I just assumed that when Grey called him "Jack" that meant Jack IS his real name. Just the Captain Harkness part is affected (although he says he worked his way up through the ranks, so at this point maybe just the "Harkness"). Perhaps that's why he chose Jack Harkness in the first place; he didn't want to go through the bother of having to remember to answer to another name. Or he just didn't his lovers calling out someone else's name in bed. ;)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-04-07 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the way you retconned it. Not quite reviving makes a lot of sense.

not sure about his name, I honestly just think the writers screwed up
