Weather and whatnot
Weather here's been interesting- a storm started Saturday afternoon and pretty much continued until late Sunday/early Monday and the temp plummeted. We'd had a few weeks of 30s and 40s and basically all the snow melted and stuff started to green up and then BAM 12-15" of the stuff followed by Monday being in the negatives. It was so fun shoveling then :( we've had another dusting since but then temps started climbing and it's supposed to be in the 70s on Saturday. Mother Nature is definitely having some fun with my area.
Tumblr has also been all over the place. It pushed through an update on the 16th that was *very* unpopular (radically altering how notifs of reblogs/adding comments work) and they first tried a 'we understand you have strong feeling about this but it is what it is' response about 9 hours later (their reply to their original post) but then early on the 17th they completely walked it back although it sounds like they're still thinking of implementing something?) But as a result it got me to take a dive into the stupidly high number tumblr posts I'd favorited with the intent to read/watch/research later when I had more time. Behold:
The 'Make 45 groups of 45!' sorting game, a great game for anyone who likes lists or sorting or desires to lose numerous hours of their day(s) in a fugue logic puzzle clicking state.
For those of you who use Firefox it recently rolled out an AI kill switch and here's an article about it and how to turn it off (basically, go to settings and look for AI controls in the sidebar, it should already be toggled to off but it's good to check)
Are normal looking links too boring for you? Try Creepy Link, the URL shortener that makes your links look as suspicious as possible.
A bunch of the posts were also things I wanted to check out to add to my resource posts so between what was there and links I was already behind in adding I'm going to probably be adding about 100 new links. Since it's so many, even though it's a little early I am also attempting a full click through for all the links to check to make sure they're still good. As requested, I'll also be adding a 'last updated' date to each post as I get to them.
And, as always, last but not least, 2 weeks of
recthething recs (tumblr art for Addams Family, Leverage, MDZS/Untamed, Merlin, Murderbot, and ST:TOS and a fic for MDZS/Untamed):
The Addams Family
- Addamses (absolutely gorgeous Gomez and Morticia)
Leverage
- the rundown job aka the episode that just kept on giving (gorgeous Parker, Hardison and Eliot)
MDZS/The Untamed
- same grumpy face, no matter how old he gets (baby and teen jin ling, so well done)
Merlin
- Merthur and a unicorn (love this)
- Arthur (gorgeous blue-tones digital art)
- once and future (love the framing of this with them on either side of excalibur and just their looks in general)
Murderbot
- A mini papercraft commission of Murderbot (I love these papercrafts and this Murderbot is great)
ST:TOS
- Best tos episode (Uhura and tribbles, hilarious!)
MDZS/Untamed fic:
Madam Gentian and the Fugitive by azure_enechelon (185k)
Summary: Wei Wuxian befriends a mysterious woman in a hidden corner of the Cloud Recesses. Lan Wangji has a mother to confide in. Madam Lan does her best to make up for a lot of bad parenting. It isn't going to change everything, but maybe it can change just enough. (Recently completed very long, but wonderfully detailed and interesting AU)

I think I missed the tumblr fiasco. I only check in every few days, and I saw the aftermath but not the actual changes made. I have no idea what companies are thinking sometimes. YouTube changed the way the subscriptions page works about a month ago to put 'Most Relevant' videos at the top of it, like any one needed that, and even worse, on the Roku app, which is where I watch 99% of YouTube videos, they didn't implement the coding properly, so instead of there being a category at the top you could skip over, it just showed all the your subscriptions out of chronological order. You'd get a video from three days ago, followed by one from 20 minutes ago, followed by one from 4 hours ago, followed by one from seven days ago. It was impossible to see if anyone I followed uploaded anything new because it was all out of order, and videos I didn't want to watch kept getting boosted upwards because I hadn't watched them so the algorithm decided they were more relevant to me. Like, I didn't watch them because I'm not interested in them, dude. Don't tell me what to do! It took a month to fix it. This is after they implemented the stupid 'video starts playing when you hover too long over it' feature I can't disable that makes me anxious and hopping around with my controller trying to look at titles without them playing at me, lol. I think it's just the way my brain works, but I can't pick a video while another one is making noise in the background, it interferes with decision making because I just want it to shut up.

The tumblr thing happened so quickly it I think a lot of people were "Troy with Pizza" WTF since it was I think only 20 hours? One day off tumblr and you missed it except for the posts complaining about that continued for a bit or the ones commenting about tumblr's tptb screwing up.
It is AMAZING to me how many companies seem to make changes just to make changes and without a thought at all about what folks want or how/why they use the product. Most people are on tumblr because they want to BE on tumblr, rather than a different social media site. Yet there tumblr is saying "people like twitter/instagram/whatever! Let's change ourselves to look like that!" SIGH.
Omg that Roku thing sounds annoying. Chronological order is so useful and important! Why mess with that! I also really hate the youtube play if hovered over thing, it messes with watch history and affects what its algorithm shows you and half the time I had no interest in what my mouse accidentally rested on for a moment and I have to go into my watch history and delete it. SIGH.

I think company execs feel like they have to justify their existence/paycheques and just every once in a while come up with some scheme and the poor underlings have to implement it knowing it's going to suck. Tumblr is my happy place, I have curated it very specifically to not induce rage, and I do not want it to be like other social media platforms. But you know, also, money. How do we get more out of you?
The hover over feature on Roku is very annoying because there is no mouse, so you always have to be on a video. There's always one selected. It only does it on the subscription page, thankfully, but I have to dance between videos quickly so it doesn't start them playing if I linger too long. And the lack of chronological order was just stupidly distressing to me. I was so genuinely upset about it, I could not keep straight what was new, what wasn't. I have no idea what they thought they were doing there, and I was worried on behalf of the creators that people weren't seeing their new videos, which is so important for how a video performs.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. SIGH
