As an FYI Pocket (aka/formerly ReadItLater) is being shut down. Apparently you can export your saves up until October 8th but then all user data will be deleted. I haven't used my account in years but when I saw the news I got it in my head I needed to go through the links and see what, if anything, was salvageable. I think I last really looked at it mid-2018 when I started compiling my useful links masterposts but I know I had done a *lot* with it early in my fandom career and had transferred a tons of saved links over when del.ic.ious went under (sighhhhh, remember delicious? That was such a great site.) and the account was from 2007 or 2008 or something so....

Oh my fucking god I have so many links there. Thousands upon thousands. Why I have it in my head I have to go through them all I do not know, but brain says what brain says. Hundreds of links to dead recipe blogs, hundreds more to deleted livejournals, tons of deleted ff.net and ao3 fics, lots of genealogy sites and other random research things that have gone *poof* but still. Hours upon hours spent clicking links so far and so many left to check/decide about.

And of course I am left with the... where to store these links now? There have been rumors swirling about tumblr dying (for years now, but recently they seem more serious) so I had been vaguely trying to get though favorited posts with links there in case it went under so obviously I'm not going to just transfer ReadItLater stuff there. I had moved a bunch of tumblr stuff to discord but there's been some grumblings that *that* isn't terribly long-term stable either so I should probably move stuff off there too but. Ugh and Grrrr.

For now I've been tossing stuff in a locked-to-me dreamwidth post. Eventually I'll have a good dozen or two new links to add to my useful things masterposts and I also did find some recipes to try and some comment-fic fills I might clean up and post so it hasn't been a complete waste of time but still. Not how I've planned to spend all my free time for a week+ with however many hours of it left to go.

I think I mentioned moths getting into some stored linens, well I finished my first rug with the resulting fabric strips:

Blue green rug
35.5” by 23” give or take, green/blue plaid flannel sheet rug

I somehow managed to find some tumblr art to rec for [community profile] recthething the last two weeks but I now have nothing stored up and no real thoughts so I'm kind of assuming my long streak of reccing there weekly is about to be over. Sigh. But here's art for Discword, Dracula, Hogan's Heroes, MDZS/The Untamed, SPN, Under the Skin, X-Files:

Discworld
- They did the job they didn’t have to do, and they died doing it (Animatic to Les Mis' Drink With Me)
- a take on how this priceless dialog happened on the old cemetery of Ankh Morpork one glorious 25th of May (really like the subtle emphasis on Vetinari's flower here)
- All The Little Angels Liber Chorum's take on the discworld song, along with sketches from Night Guard

Dracula
- I’ve been reading Dracula for the first time, im about halfway through, here’s my take on it so far: The polycule learns about monster hunting (hilarious comic)

Hogan's Heroes
- The Boys (amazing sketch of all of the allied characters)

MDZS/The Untamed
- Modern mdzs series - Wei Ying (Cute Modern AU version)
- On this Easter I would like to honour my favourite resurrected savour of man. (every so delightfully creepy)

SPN
- The Fallen Angel (gorgeous Cas)

Under the Skin | 猎罪图鉴
- Happy 520 from our favourite police crew (Everyone's so happy! I love it)
- If Shen Yi was portrayed as the real artist he is (this made me laugh, it's just too true)

X-Files
- if they looked at me like that I think I’d disintegrate on the spot (perfect expressions for Mulder and Scully here)

Daughter's favorite animal is the pangolin and she moved last week so I hunted down a pattern and made her one for a housewarming present

It's based off the lemon-pangolin pattern here but I made a bunch of changes (and actually took notes!) so if anyone wants to try their hand at it, let me know, I can write up my version.

Weather here has been nuts, it went from a highs of 94 to 48 in only a few days. I loathed the heat and high humidity but that kind of temperature change is nuts and hard on the body as well. Santini isn't thrilled with the weather change either but that's because he's of the belief windows should always be open just in case he wants to properly stalk the bunnies or squirrels (does he ever get off his pile of blankets on the couch to do so? No, of course not. Does that matter? No, of course not. He is cat. His opinion is all that should matter)

Moths got into the chest we were keeping some random linens and clothes in so had to toss the chest and then decide what to do with all the now not wearable/donatable sheets and shirts and whatnot so, of course, it's all going to be rugs. I spent most of the week prepping it about half of it -cutting in strips and then rolling the strips into balls/disks depending for easier use later (after washing, of course)- but then decided to start a blanket instead of a rug. Maybe I'll switch off between a skein of blanket, do a rug, another skein, more rug, etc.

And, last but not least, two weeks of [community profile] recthething tumblr recs (DCU, MDZS/The Untamed, Sherlock Holmes-ACD, ST:DS9, Star Wars, SPN, X-Files)

DCU
- Every tender shrimp needs a soft space to recuperate, amiright? (very tender Bruce/Clark moment)

MDZS/The Untamed
- mdzs fandom, long time no see! it’s been almost five years since i last drew wei wuxian, so please accept my offering now (wonderfully eerie Yiling Patriarch era WWX)
- Nie Mingjue and Baxi-huahua The Unrelenting (absolutely love this idea of how Baxia would be in a swords->dogs modern AU)
- Wangxian lightbox (very neat)

Sherlock Holmes - ACD
- Holmes and Watson overlooking the moors (lovely yet eerie Hound of Baskervilles moment)

ST:DS9
- Quark Study (Quark and tribbles, love it!)

Star Wars
- happy star wars day!!! may the 4th be with you!!! (adorable grogu doodle)
- Skywalker Twins comic (hilarious Leia being better with the force than Luke comic)

Supernatural
- Destiel (I think I like the alt background under the cut better but this is a wonderful scene from a hunt either way)

X-Files
- Mulder and Scully in the rain (lovely painting of these two)

(I'm honestly surprised I managed to find stuff to rec these past two weeks. I keep thinking that I'm going to break my approximately 4yr long weekly reccing streak but have managed to squeak in a few. I doubt I'll keep it up, but oh well, it was a fun challenge while I managed it)

As a head's up there's a new round of bots hitting AO3 and posting comments claiming works failed some kind of AI test. The one I got read "Claude showed 69% on analysis. Already posted it to the Discord blacklist. There’s a massive difference between using AI for brainstorming and straight-up uploading what the bot spits out. Readers deserve better." They're usually left by guests so if you get one just hit the 'report spam' button and ignore/delete it. (Hilariously, the comment was left on a work written for an children's lit exchange in 2013 so very very much not able to have been made by AI and it's the only work in its fandom so I've no idea how they even found it to bother with their spam).

In more *ugh* news last year Duolingo fired a lot of its translators to pivot to AI and now Duolingo's CEO has announced Duolingo will be replacing ALL contract workers with AI and elsewhere announced a whole slew of new languages the app will be offering that have all been created (solely or mostly) via AI. None are English->other language so I haven't checked any out but there's been numerous posts/comments/reports of how... not great they are to put it politely. Ever since Duo got rid of the tree I've been collecting tumblr and reddit posts with suggestions for other apps/sites, I'm really busy right now but hope to throw together a post compiling the info within a few weeks.

There was recently a flash exchange focused on lemmings and other small rodents and I went a little nuts crocheting for it. I wound up making 4 creatures- 2 generic animals (mouse and capybara), Shanklin the Stab Possum from Gravity Falls (along with a crocheted knife for it), and The Death of Rats from Discworld (the scythe was so annoying to try to do OMG) and posting 9 works (reusing the mouse and capybara and a previously made guinea pig along with some little items I freehand crocheted for the prompts like a tiny mug of coffee, a shrink ray, a pair of wings, two flower crowns, etc. (Many, many other things were tried but failed. So many.) Everything's on [archiveofourown.org profile] donutsweeper (rather than my EAD birthday bash sock that most of the crochet is on) but here's a few of them:

mouse-with-coffee-cup.jpeg

capybara-with-flower-crown.jpeg

the-death-of-rats.jpeg

(I really need to get better at taking pictures of my crochet. So much detail gets lost and sometimes the angle is just weird no matter what I try. SIGH)

And, last but not least, [community profile] recthething recs! (One MDZS/Untamed Pacific Rim fusion fic and tumblr art for that plus Dracula, Looney Tunes, Merlin, Sherlock Holmes and SPN)

by the grace of the fire and the flames by ShippersList (56k, locked to archive)
Summary: Three years after the Sunshot Campaign (and two years after Wei Ying shut himself and the Wen remnants into the Burial Mounds), something rips open in the bottom of the sea and unimaginable horrors crawl out. The cultivation world unites once more in the face of a common enemy. Lan Wangji knows from the start that without Wei Ying, there is no hope of survival. (neat Pacific Rim AU)

Dracula
- I miss Dracula so heres a silly drawing of it as a muppet movie XD (absolutely delightful)

Looney Tunes
- If the Bugs Bunny show ever gets another revival, I advocate for Yosemite Sam to heckle at the hosts periodically (hilarious comic)

MDZS/The Untamed
- Lan Wangji, do you want revenge? (amazing Yiling Laozu LWJ)
- Ahh... the Burial Mounds (hilarious multi-panel comic)

Merlin
- First date ideas (these are so sweet)

Sherlock Holmes
- Lesson (love the way the pipe smoke blends into the background in this Granada!Holmes sketch)

Supernatural
- Carry On (gorgeous Dean fanart)</details)

Ugh this month. I am on take 3 of my h/c assignment. Here's hoping this one actually works. After finishing that blanket and oven mitt I decided to try to use a recently adopted skein into shawl/scarf/wrap thing and only after completing a shawl I realized I hated the shape (it was one of those 'start with tiny triangle and increase in the first and last stitch of every row' things and the resulting shape was weird and extreme) so I puttered about with a few different patterns before finally finding one that worked (technically a pattern called the 'Gratitude Wrap'). I'll probably never wear it, but whatever. Lookie:

Light blue wrap
(Terrible picture, but I actually blocked this and it made such a difference, growing from 52"x13.5" to 62x 15.5

I then decided to make a string/market bag thing and have just frogged my 4th attempt. No idea why none are working but boy they are not. Time to put that project on the back burner for a while.

I don't *think* tumblr will go down any time soon, but the most recent round of 'the sky is falling' posts there got me to start weeding through my favorited posts (aka stuff to look at later posts) and, while I've still tons to go through, I've added a few dozen more links to various of my Resource Posts (here's the link to the Masterpost. And yes, at some point I will figure out how to either organize the stupidly long history (etc) and randomness posts or split them into two posts each or just a new third one? Or something, I don't know). Ugh. Both posts are such a mess. But, to be fair, when I first collected the links for posting them (SEVEN years ago, wow) there was just under 800 or so links in total between the 10 posts. Now there's over 2k and 11 posts, so it's not surprising organization has fallen by the wayside a little.

And, last but not least, several weeks worth of [community profile] recthething recs (MDZS/Untamed fics and tumblr art for a bunch of different fandoms):

Last(?) Loop by PyrrhaIphis (10k)
Summary Snippet: Have you ever wondered what a time loop story looks like to the people who aren't doing the looping? This is that fic! Wei Wuxian is living his life over and over again, and this time he thinks he's finally figured out how to get it right so no one he cares about will die. But we're only getting to see the effects of what he's doing through the eyes of others. (really neat take on a time travel fix-it)

Documented Fact by Scrippio (7k)
Summary: In which Zizhen transfers schools and can't quite believe his new professors are rivals the way everyone else says. Or: 5 times no one listened to Zizhen and 1 confirmation (adorable modern-with-cultivation Cultivation University Zizhen POV fic)

The Devil Went Down to Gusu by Nomme_dePlume (21k)
Summary Snippet: Wei Wuxian laughed. “Ah, Lan Zhan, I like you! Let’s be friends! And as a sign of friendship, I’ll tell you a little secret.” He leaned forward, and as he did, his sweet, amused smile curled into something nasty, and his eyes glowed a red so bright, the clearing looked bathed in blood. “I’m as much of a devil as I need to be to cleanse this world of the unrighteous.” He winked again. “Tell your friends about me.” (really great canon divergent AU where WWX has been a story told by the cultivation sects for years and finally makes an appearance)

tumblr art:
Babylon 5
- Vir is best boy. (delightful animation of one of Vir's most iconic scenes)

M*A*S*H*:
- P*E*A*N*U*T*S (various characters drawn in 'Peanuts' style. Adorable!)

MDZS/The Untamed
- they're just so happy (really cute yunmeng trio)
- YLLZ sunshot campaign ver. (spooky wwx at his yiling laozhu best)
- "He has been proper and righteous his whole life, untouched by the corruption of the secular world. The only mistake he has ever made in his life is you!" (powerful art of what the whipping scene might have looked like)

The Muppets
- an album cover for Rowlf (mockup of what a record by rowlf might look like, loved it)

Sylvester - Georgette Heyer
- embroidered hot water bottle cover (excellently done!)

I suspect I'm going to run out of stuff to rec soon, which is a shame since I've been reccing every week there for close to 4 years but I guess it was bound to happen eventually.
donutsweeper: (Default)
Having an exchange assignment to stress over and avoid meant I got a lot of crocheting done these past two weeks! I finished the big blanket I started January 1st:

Crocheted 82” x 44” blanket

It's huge, 82"x44" or so and used about 4k yards of yarn, as planned (all but one skein I purposely bought for it this past Black Friday sale as well as the majority of the yarn left over from the dragon scales blanket I did a year and a half ago)

Attempt four of the oven mitt finally worked (and it was only after I finished it that I realized despite this being my fifth mitt, I've been doing the thumb wrong this entire time but oh well). The multicolored yarn I bought for it didn't turn out how I'd hoped but oh well, still, oven mitt!

While crocheting I watched The Imperial Coroner, a Tang Dynasty(ish) set drama about a woman who wants to be coroner for the investigative branch of the government (led by a prince who was the most well written awkward bean of character I've seen in a while) and how they end up unraveling both current and decades old mysteries together. I tried it because it starred Wang Ziqi and it was very good and nice change from all the modern crime c-dramas I've been watching because despite engaging mysteries that sometimes involved murder or death or whatever, it showed basically *nothing* - no drugs, no rapes, no real violence... even the autopsies were done by her explaining what she'd done while cartoonish sketches show what she'd discovered during her VO. All the main characters (those two, the deputy of the investigative branch, the prince's (female) best friend and his elder brother) were all great and could have made a wonderful polycube but the actual canon pairings are nice too. It available on youtube and viki.

Egg prices have finally started to come down here but are still about 3x more than they were even 2 years ago. However, they'd reached $9.49 a dozen at the regular supermarket and $11 at the fancy one so I will take the current $7.99. (Actually, I won't because the fancyschmancy eggs that I normally wouldn't consider because usually they ran about 2x the price of normal eggs due to being cage-free/whatever are, while more than they used to be, still only $6.50. Which says something about capitalism and corporate greed to me. SIGH)

I haven't started using an egg substitutes for cookie baking but I have begun using a flax seed meal replacement for muffins and quick bread (2 eggs = 2 tbsp flax seed meal + 5 tbsp water - mix and let sit a few minutes for it to thicken; I've never had a problem with it affecting the baked goods rising, but supposedly using a slightly heaping spoons of baking soda or powder or whatever leavening agent the recipe calls for will help with that if it's needed.) Another option is 3 tbsp of unsweetened applesauce per egg, but I've found that can alter the taste a bit more, although it can be barely noticeable in most muffins/breads. There's a few other substitutions, especially ones more for cookies rather than breads, that I might try if egg prices rise again but hopefully they won't.

[community profile] recthething recs! Tumblr art recs for 911, Merlin, Sherlock Holmes and X-Files and an Untamed/MDZS fic rec:

- in my mind, whatever it is they have going on right now, they're probably going to kiss about it later (excellent use of lighting in this and yes, they absolutely will)
Sherlock Holmes
- their asses are NOT making their valentine’s day dinner reservation (tender and sweet Watson and Holmes)
- recent painting practices (a whole bunch of gorgeous Holmes & Watson, and Holmes/Watson, art pieces)
X-Files

Weary Wanderer Come Rest Your Bones by NonsensicalRambling (25k, locked to archive)
Summary: The gorgeous young man who flung open the door and gave him a look of surprise that was possibly mixed with interest, before giving him a blinding grin and a cheerful "Hi!" a moment later, is not what Lan Zhan expected. "Are you the owner?"
"That's me! Are you looking for a room?" The man didn't step back from the doorway, but his smile didn’t dim.
"I am from the Lan sect. We were contacted to come take care of a haunting."
The young owner blinked, and his smile dimmed. "No. I didn't contact you. We don't have any problems that require cultivators. Someone is probably trying to pull a prank."
Lan Zhan’s brow furrowed. "We have already been paid. I can -"
"Congrats on the free money! Go away."
The door slammed in Lan Zhan's face. (interesting modern-with-cultivation AU where WWX runs a B&B for resentful/supernatural creatures that someone keeps reporting to the Lan Sect)

A little more than two days left for h/c exchange signups! I finally got mine in yesterday; of course, me being me, they range from stupidly rare to small (in English fandom circles) fandoms. I need to remember to peruse the requests and alter my offers later, I don't think I'm matching any at the moment.

Last week mother nature decided to dump about a foot of snow here, which made for a lot of very unfun shoveling. Weather being weather though, it's already 90% melted. Fingers crossed the weathercritters are lying and the projected snow on Saturday winds up being incorrect.

I've watched/finished watching a bunch of things since my last post!

Xiao Zhan's 2019 movie Jade Dynasty was pretty terrible, but probably not helped by bad and hard to read subs. This felt like it was a movie version of a long, complicated plot I was supposed to already know the basics of. It was by no means the worst thing I've watched for Xiao Zhan and it did have a brief scene of a monkey riding a dog, but it's not something I would recommend.

The Love You Give Me, a 28 episode, second chance romance story had its ups and down and I can see why people would like it if they liked certain tropes but despite Wang Ziqi looking very fine in wonderful suits and having some wonderful whumpy moments, I didn't really like it. All three 'romances' involved the woman first chasing after their guy to the point of being creepy and stalkery and then, just when the guy started being interested, changing their mind until the man begged and pleaded and threw himself at her until they finally gave in. Add in several misunderstandings and purposeful misinterpretations by the FL (and lying to their kid about it) and eh... not my thing.

I *finally* finished Strange Tales of Jiang Cheng. It was fine I guess? Xia Zhiguang (from Spirealm) was gorgeous and had insane chemistry with both his male and female costar. It's 52 short (15min) episodes so not a huge time commitment at least.

I did end up really liking The First Shot, which also starred Wang Ziqi (yes, making it the third thing starring him I watched in about a month since he was also the star of The Embers but I was happily surprised at how different all his characters were). It's about the formation of a makeshift team of police detectives trying to combat a new drug syndicate that popped up in Northern China in 1997. Interesting setting (the modern, but not quite aspect of it) with great, well rounded characters. Some of the subject material is pretty harsh, so while I do recommend it, it's with caveats. (It's even on legally available on youtube)

I liked it so much, it even inspired me to write something outside of an exchange for it (how *weird* right?): The Visible Marking of Memory. Summary: It was only a scar, but was also so much more. (515 words)

There's been lots of due South on my tumblr dash thanks to the Eleventh of March and I came across one little factoid I never knew before: "Leslie Nielsen, who played Sgt. Buck Frobisher, was the son of a Mountie in real life. During his first appearance on the show, he took Paul Gross aside and told him that he was lacing his boots incorrectly and then proceeded to teach him the proper way for a Mountie to tie his shoes." There was even a picture!

How cute is that?

Here's this week's [community profile] recthething recs (an MDZS fic and a The First Shot ficlet):

what was once your pain (will be your home) by Jenrose (51k)
Summary: What if Wei Wuxian dragged some of his enemies into Luanzang Gang with him when he was thrown there? What if he and Wen Zhuliu had to work together to survive? (absolutely fascinating canon-divergent AU)

Cuddles in the Cold by psghayleaux (329 words, locked to archive)
Summary: Zheng Bei woke up slowly. The light coming in through the windows gave him no indication of the time, only that there was snow falling. (no canon knowledge is necessary for this soft, sweet ficlet)
donutsweeper: (Default)
Signups for the Hurt/Comfort exchange have opened!! I have been perusing the tagset for days and am still deciding on what I want to request and offer. So many things, so hard to choose.

Attempt #2 at the oven mitt was somehow even more of a failure than attempt #1. No idea how or why. Tension issues, I guess. Luckily (luckily?) I noticed at the 1/3rd-ish mark this time instead of 3/4. Still annoying though.

Taking a break from crochet I pulled out the last of the crappy junk sheets I had and boy were these crappy: a set of Peanuts twin sheets from the mid 70s that were so old the fitted sheet was see-through even after being folded in half. The nice thing about rug making is while I don't know 100% what I'm doing (I tend to misjudge how long to make the initial starting row) I do know enough to work them quickly so the whole process from ripping the strips to finishing the rug was only about 5 days. Rug!

Knotted 30”x24” rug
It's not huge, 30"x24" or so, but I managed to get a lot more workable strips out of the sheets than I'd initially thought, so I'm pretty happy with it.

While making it I finished watching The Embers and wow, it was so good. The MDL summary for it is absolutely awful and it's very hard to talk about the show generally without spoiling or at least discussing many of its twists and turns but I made an attempt at writing one with no real spoilers past the opening episode that I've been sharing everywhere in hopes of having more people to scream about this fandom with:
The Embers is a story about Liao Siyuan who currently (in 2019, when the show is set) is 20 and finishing university when a fellow student is killed and he initially gets suspected since he might have been the last one to see her alive. He distrusts/hates the cop, Shu He, who is leading the case because back in 2009 that cop solved the arson/murder of Liao Siyuan's family by claiming Liao Siyuan's older brother did it. Said older brother, Liao Zhibai, was much older, 21 or so and a police cadet at the time and died in the fire. Liao Siyuan idolized his brother and knows his brother didn't do it. He also still sees and interacts with his brother everyday.
(Things get much, much more complicated as the original case and then new ones seem to all be linked to Siyuan and the fire from 2009 somehow and he, first alone with his 'brother' and then actually working with Shu He, tries to figure it all out)
The best recommendation I can give for it is that it's one of those shows that works on both levels - when watching initially without any knowledge or spoilers for events and will still work on a rewatch when you do, which is pretty rare. If I've piqued your interest it's slowly being released on youtube by tencent (with the unfortunately typical occasional missing sound scene) but is also *ahemable* here.

When poking about AO3 while planning nominations for the h/c exchange I discovered that a fandom I had requested for probably 5 yuletides in a row (Strange World, which I wrote up a promo for back then) now has an AO3 presence in the form of an amazing vid!! The vid, set to "Winter" by The Alpha Conspiracy can be found here.

I forgot to post the recs I made [community profile] recthething for Candy Hearts here but here's the link to the comment I made in that week's weekly recpost back while the authors were still anon (art for Dracula, Guardian, Original Work, Sherlock Holmes and Word of Honor and fic for Addams Family, due South and Great Mouse Detective) along with last week's rec (an MDZS/Untamed fic)

River's Child by NonsensicalRambling (80k, locked to archive)
Summary Snippet: There is an array under the floor at Lotus Pier. Or rather, there used to be an array. For nearly the entirety of the Jiang sect's existence it was kept a secret, passed down only from sect leader to heir. When Jiang Fengmian died without taking his son through the ritual to maintain it, it shattered, and what it bound is now free for the first time in centuries. War is on the horizon, and blood is waking up.

The waters of Yunmeng hold many secrets, and even the most placid looking river can hide dangerous currents and depths. (really interesting canon-divergent, no golden core transfer, dragon AU)

Candyhearts exchange (the chocolatebox replacement) opened a few days ago, lots of good things in the collection- go check them out!

Also, there's still a few days left for nominations for the hurt/comfort exchange! The post with links to both the tagset and nomination guidelines is here.

It's been stupidly cold here. With windchill yesterday's low was -29f and high -4f (-18 and -2f without) and while today is "warmer" the high is still only supposed to be 2 before windchill and I don't consider that much better. It's February, we're not supposed to be getting January weather in February and I do not like it.

I screwed up my most recent craft project somehow. I was making another oven mitt and realized when it was more than 3/4 of the way done that somehow it was *way* too small (width-wise. It fit me, I'd been checking that, but while I have long fingers so match the others in the house's handsize that way, their palms are much wider and somehow even following the exact same pattern it was a good half inch to full inch less wide and wouldn't fit them comfortably. I had to frog the whole thing. :( Two weeks' work down the tube.

My attempts to complete more on my MDL to-watch list are failing. I got through a bunch more of Strange Tales of Jiang Cheng (it's 52 shortish (15 min or so) episodes but then kept pausing and wandering away. I'm about 80/85% of the way through but have hit that 'everything looks awful/is going terribly for our heroes' portion of the story that's so common with dramas these days and I normally am not a fan of it but when I was struggling to get through the already contrived roadblocks... sigh. The three main characters are gorgeous and good actors (especially The Spirealm's Xia Zhiguang) but I'm giving up on it again for now.

I decided to move the Kdrama "When the Phone Rings" to the dropped list after failing to even remotely care about the characters on a third watch attempt and moved the cdrama "Lies Never Lie" (which starred Conjuring Curse's Pangzi, Wang Bowen) to on-hold (it wasn't terrible but it was boring with meh characters and I don't know what the people claiming it's a f/f version of Under the Skin are smoking).

A bunch of people in one of my discords were screaming about The Embers so I gave it a try and flew through all the episodes currently available in 3 days (20 out of the eventual 28). It has some familiar faces (supporting cast includes 2 NIF actors - Consort Jing and General Lie (Xiao Jingyuan's second in command) and so far, obviously, I am loving it. No clue how it will end though, it hasn't really followed any expected tropes so not going to rec it quite yet since more than one thing I've love has totally fumbled the finale. Also, as a note, some of the cases are *brutal* so that's something to keep in mind. (I've been watching it here).

And, because I am terrible at remember to post them here, have several weeks of [community profile] recthething recs (MDZS/Untamed fic and tumblr art recs for due south, guardian, leverage, mdzs, merlin, and spn):

Today the friending meme over at [community profile] snowflake_challenge was posted and it made me realize I hadn't actually done any of the challenges this year. The past two years I'd bounced off of a few and skipped others since they weren't pertinent, but I was kind of surprised to realize the month had come and gone and there hadn't been a single challenge I really was interested in or hadn't done numerous times before. Sigh. Oh well.

I'm nearly halfway through the blanket I'm working on, unfortunately I hadn't noticed that taking a break from it to do the EAD and Threshold amigurumi resulted in me using a much tighter stitch for a bit but oh well, I noticed now and loosened up the stitch. There's a chunk of rows where it's a lot less wide and tighter but it's just a throw that's going to live on the back of the couch and not be a present or sold or anything so meh, oh well.

As an FYI, if you've been thinking maybe you've been getting less kudos lately than usual, it's not your work, it's AO3. Kudos emails for numerous accounts were simply not sent out several times this month (including today and yesterday, seven days in all, particularly if you usually get yours from 6-9am EST). Apparently they're looking into it, but it's not a quick fix.

I listen to/watch a lot of history, linguistic/language and various other learn-about-something type podcasts and youtube channels and I'm finding that more and more often the research they seem to be doing is more of the briefest glace-at-wikipedia-if-that type than any real work at finding any details out themselves. It's frustrating. (Most recently on my instant-drop list was an english language lovers focused one that had an entire episode about Shakespeare and how many words and phrases he invented. Which, no. First recorded use of? Meh, maybe even if most actually aren't (including one he gave that even the OED mentioned was from Old English), but invented? Definitely not. Not only has the idea he did been disproven over and over by now, it's also beyond illogical, his plays had to be understood by the people who watched them. SIGH)

There *are* still a bunch that provide sources and show and explain their research, thankfully, but it's just frustrating how rare it's becoming. Currently, my favorite (actually well researched) language-oriented one is the idioms podcast Bunny Trails (which is on most podcast platforms but also puts their podcasts up on youtube) and the history one is the welsh history youtube channel Cambrian Chronicles which, among other things, has done some really interesting dives into incorrect wikipedia articles, trying to figure out why wikipedia claims what it does.

Have two weeks of [community profile] recthething recs (one Mdzs/Untamed fic and tumblr art for DMBJ, Guardian, MDZS/Untamed, Merlin, ST:Voy, and Under the Skin):
Junior Detectives! (The Case of Mo Xuanyu) by CheekyBrunette (64k)
Summary Snippet: The one where Wei Wuxian uses the pseudonym "Mo Xuanyu" for reasons yet to be revealed, and the junior detectives solve a case each chapter while investigating their chemistry teacher. (cute YA detective book vibes in this recently finished fic)

Tumblr art recs:

- Happy new year from hei xiazi and his snake friend (wonderful snake, wonderful way to celebrate the Lunar New Year)

- who did this? | it’s not mine part one and part two (Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan through the years, wonderfully done)

Merlin

- let the light in (cute Shen Yi, Du Cheng and Xiaoxuan the cat art)

Well, whoops, there went most of the month.

EAD Birthday Bash came and went and I crocheted a *lot* for it (enough that I now make up more than 12% of AO3's crochet tag between my two accounts). The theme was pizza and one of my favorites of what I did was a kitty stealing pizza toppings
but I crocheted a large number of things, including a shark, the gavlegoat, a rose, one of the mutant lizard babies from Star Trek: Voyager's Threshold episode (which I freehanded and now and trying to figure out what I did and how to write up the pattern since people asked for it) all of which can be found in this picture
but I also did my first foray into NSFW crochet (yes, seriously, do not click unless you really want to see nsfw crochet)

The fandom was "cock fandom" and the character requested "blue balled cock" yes, I am hilarious.

This month I decided to try to tackle my 'currently watching' list on mydramalist, where all the asian shows I'd started but have not finished (nor decided to move to the dropped or 'on hold' lists) end up since it was getting quite long. (I watched these three either on youtube or *cough cough here cough*.)

Unfortunately, Fangs of Fortune definitely isn't for me. It's by Guo Jingming (director of Wulang and The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity etc) and stars Huo Minghao (from Psych-Hunter, I am Nobody and TLT2) but while the sets and costumes were gorgeous it was ploddingly slow and far more flash than substance and really not for me so I dropped it down to the on-hold list. I know lots of people loved it and maybe someday I'll give it another chance, but I doubt it.

I did finish S.C.I. a Hong Kong set cop/special investigations show from 2018 wherein a fancypants amazing detective has to team up with his old childhood psychologist friend to solve cases. I went into knowing the budget mostly went into the flashy car the detective drove and that a chunk of the plot was ridiculous. Those were both true but despite that (and one of the most annoying female characters I've endured in a long time) it was pretty enjoyable a watch. Ji Xiaobing (who was delightful in DMBJ's Mystery of the Abyss) and his fine suits and undercut were great as the psychologist and he had amazing chemistry with the detective and he managed to sell the batshit plots quite well. It also had one of the creepiest, well acted no-effects needed unnerving scene I've seen in ages: Highlight for spoilers! *Zhan Yao (Ji Xiaobing) was walking in an outdoor marketplace, talking on the phone when suddenly two people stop directly in front of him and turn to face him but don't say anything and he's confused for a second but then *everybody* in the marketplace suddenly stops and faces him and then they all start walking in circles around him in this slow, steady pace. The scene lasts a few minutes and evil mastermind badguy dude shows up during it and whatnot but just the whole thing was so unsettling and wonderfully done.* Very creepy and unsettling while not being over the top, kudos for how well done it was. Here's the best gif I could find of it:

I also finished a Taiwanese BL See Your Love which was utterly delightful. I really liked it! I'm hoping to get my act together to write up a full promo for it but briefly it's the story of Yang Zixiang who was sent to Taiwan for important family business negotiation thing only to be attacked upon arriving. He's saved by deaf mute Jiang Shaoping who happens to also be a nurse/caregiver and gets roped into working for him. Quite a lot of the business/attack plot is contrived/background/barely explored, but Jiang Shaoping's character is so well done with surprisingly good disability representation in that it didn't shy away from either the issues disabled people face (like how difficult it can be trying to find a job when disabled) or the issues/feelings/worry his parents have over it either (they were also great characters, and felt like real people). It's only 13 episodes (25-30 min ea) so not a huge time commitment. And if you like height differences, this show is for you, Yang Zixiang so much shorter than Jiang Shaoping. Here's the best non-spoilery gif I could find:

(And if you're curious, yes, Jiang Shaoping picks up Yang Zixiang numerous times in the drama. Numerous times!)
(There is also a second BL couple who also have interesting dynamic and work well together)

Happy to report I managed to rec every week for the year again (over 3.5 years of weekly recs now!) but I am honestly not sure how long I'll be able to continue. I went from always being able to find 3-5 fics to rec to aiming for three, then two and now the last few weeks it's only been one. I could just switch to more well known things to rec (I usually only rec either newly completed or 'lesser' known fic, which I judge by the number of bookmarks already on the work) but I'd rather not do that. Sigh. Maybe I'll manage to find a new fandom to play in and be able to rec from something other than mdzs/untamed regularly. Or maybe not. I guess I'll see how things go. Anyway, here's 3 mdzs/untamed fic recs and a bunch of art recs from that, doctor who, dracula, nirvana in fire and sherlock holmes.
MDZS/Untamed fic:
The Only Living Boy by deliciousblizzardshark (17k)
Summary: When the lost souls of the Burial Mounds find a homeless child who can manipulate resentful energy, they take him in, raise him as their own, and teach him everything they know. Wei Ying is living contentedly with his ghost family in the Burial Mounds, selling talismans in Yiling, but when the Wen sect invades Yiling he realizes he is going to have to do something to protect everything he loves. (really interesting take of a sentient burial mounds canon divergent AU)

Ghosts of the Burial Mounds by westiec (1.3k)
Summary: Wei Wuxian returned to them soaked in blood and resentment once more, the steel still sharp in his spine as he took his place with them. Safety. Sanctuary. Survival. The Burial Mounds were not made for these things, but Wei Wuxian tugged on the ties between them and made his claim with a strength of will that could not be denied. (absolutely excellent Burial Mounds POV fic)

DMBJ/The Lost Tomb/The Grave Robbers' Chronicles art:
The Little Tomb Robber's Alphabet joint art work by cayra, fox_of_nine_tales, hisapyon, mekare, MountainRose, psghayleaux, SirAuraelius, and Thimblerig
Summary: Wu Xie is bored in Yucun and has got it into his head to write a children's book about tomb robbing. Naturally, Xiaoge and Pangzi help out. How much baiju has been involved in the production is anyone's guess. (An adorable alphabetic art take on DMBJ)

tumblr art:
Doctor Who
- just admiring the view (absolutely adorable Five)

Dracula
- Undead wanderer Quincey P Morris, Bram Stoker can come fight me (eerie yet incredible)

MDZS/The Untamed
- Me, every time WWX and LSZ are in a scene together: THAT’S YOUR BABY. THAT’S! YOUR! BABY! (gorgeous ghost!wwx and young lan sizhui)
- One of my favorite things about The Untamed is how it begins with Wei Wuxian saying ‘Lan Zhan’ and finishes with Lan Wangji saying ‘Wei Ying’ (amazing comic)
- here's to drawing more wangxian in 2025! happy new year!! (lovely art set up like pages of a children's book)

Nirvana in Fire
- Frosted flames (gorgeous art of the majority of the core cast), also on AO3 here

Sherlock Holmes
- Happy birthday sherlock holmes! (such a wonderful Brett!Holmes portrait!)

Hope everyone's doing well and those in the Northern Hemisphere are staying warm, Monday's high is supposed be -7F/-22C here. Brrrrr.

Yuletide is open! (and has been for a few days, I've been trying (yet mostly failing, why are there only 24 hours in a day?) to work my way through the collection. There are 1759 works in 1159 fandoms. So, so much to read. Here's the fandom page - go check it out. And if that's not enough to read there's also 350 works in 272 fandoms in the madness collection.

I got two lovely gifts, a madness treat (a combination of the webcomic, 'In which a Visitor proves a Nuisance' that I'd requested and the tumblr post 'Incompetent Time-Travelling Saxophone Haters') that can be read canon blind: In Which a Miscommunication Proves Infortuitous and a prequel/worldbuilding fic for Nightmare Cafe (no real canon knowledge necessary, it's explained in the fic really well) Last Orders.

Over the last few days I finished two craft projects, a bag rug
28” x 16” plastic bag knotted rug
(made from 3-4 dozen bagel bags plus several strips of those plastic air pockets that are included in packages now that bubblewrap is less common) it's about 28"x16" I originally wanted it larger but I ran out of bags :)
and a big blanket! (which used up a good chunk of the yarn I bought at a huge discount during 2023's Black Friday sale)
pink and grey crocheted blanket it's about 55" x 64"

Now onto the next project. (And, somehow, despite using up a huge chunk of yarn, my yarnstash hasn't gone down much. Gee, wonder how that happened:D)

Forgot to mention that my Under the Skin fic, Gently Toward a New Bright Morn (Du Cheng saving Shen Yi s1e6 episode tag) was translated into Chinese and posted on lofter back in November, unfortunately a) despite studying Chinese for years now, I still don't read it and b) it requires a login to lofter to read. (A friend who has both found it and read it and said it was a good translation and properly credited to me which is very cool, UtS is so much more popular in Chinese speaking circles than English ones).

UtS s2 has also started airing, all the episodes are out in Chinese but we're still waiting for English subs for the last four. So far it's been a good season, maybe not quite on par with S1 but that'll depend on how it ends.

And (whoops) several weeks of [community profile] recthething recs! 2 MDZS/Untamed fics and a ton of tumblr art (Doctor Who, MDZS/Untamed, Sherlock Holmes, and X-Files):
Doctor Who
- Who am I? "i became slightly obsessed with the regeneration scene in the movie and specifically the whole sequence with the 8 reflections and broken mirrors everywhere so i did all this abt it" (gorgeous)
- Some Spearhead from Space doodles (adorable Three and Unit doodles)

MDZS/The Untamed
- Happy wangxian everyone (peaceful and soft wwx/lwj moment)
- Wangxian Kiss (love how you can almost see the movement in this)

Sherlock Holmes
- “It was worth a wound–it was worth many wounds–” Comic version of that scene from The Adventure of the Three Garridebs by Watson's Sketchbook (amazing)
- The Hound of the Baskervilles cover design (so good, this could be the cover for a real book)
- Peter Cushing in The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959) is something that can be so personal actually (excellent likeness)

X-Files
Lynn Buckham’s painting redrawn as Mulder and Scully featuring my favorite character, Scully’s lavender skirt suit (loved this)

MDZS/Untamed fic rec:
Darkness Before the Dawn by Selenay (64k)
Summary Snippet: In which Wei Ying is a necromancer in the middle of a zombie apocalpyse but that's only where he begins. Sometimes the darkest night brings the brightest dawn. (Really interesting modern-with-powers, although not true cultivation, AU)

An Old Cardboard Produce Box for a Cradle by julomaiboulomai, mischiefseven (25k)
Summary: "Wei Ying sits back from his labour and looks at the product of his work with satisfaction. She could use a face and some clothing, but her proportions aren’t too bad. All in all she’s a convincingly sweet doll. Mostly, anyway. He smiles, a little wry, down at the little figure resting on his worktable; she’s as uncanny as anything else that came out of the soil of the Burial Mounds, really. That just means she’ll fit right in." Wei Ying makes a meimei for A-Yuan. Things progress differently from there. (WWX means to only make A-Yuan a a doll, a little meimei, but accidentally end up with a baby daughter. Delightful fix-it)

Hope everyone's year is ending well and next year will be even better!

I finished my Yuletide assignment but I don't think any significant amount of treats are happening this year. I had been hoping that my output would turn around and while I didn't expect to be anywhere near my most productive years, I was hoping to match what I managed the last two years but it doesn't look like that will happen. To an extent it's due to my shifting away from watching much western tv - a lot of years there used to be some show (or even two) I'd picked up and watched during the writing period and could then fill some treats that way but I also just haven't been writing much in general lately so who knows. I know there's more to Yuletide than just writing treats, I just have to convince my brain that.

In the least shocking news to people who read my dreamwidth ever, I've been crocheting and baking a bunch. (And tis very annoying I can't just post discord pics of everything here anymore, uploading images to dreamwidth is too annoying to do for everything). Baking over the last month or so has included pumpkin bread with cinnamon streusel, pumpkin chocolate chip muffins, oatmeal raisin muffins, carrot bread, peanut butter swirl brownies, cream cheese chocolate chip cookies, chocolate crumble cake, mixed chip cookies (various combos of white chocolate, peanut butter chip and chocolate chips as well as each separately), peanut butter chocolate chip cookies and probably more?

Crochetwise there's that oven mitt I mentioned last post and then I used all the cotton scraps from the various mitts/potholders to make a kitchen scrubby. I also made a worry wyrm/fidget dragon and am 90% done with current blanket. The black friday yarn sales were meh, but decent enough I could get more cotton and the yarn I need for the next blanket I have planned. (Non-crochet crafting-wise I also have enough bread bags I need to at least start another rug to use them up.) Pictures!:
worry wyrm and oven mitt

and

Under the Skin S2 drops on the 10th. I *loved* s1. (Here's the review I wrote up of it.) It was tightly written and well acted and actually inspired me to write something outside of an exchange for it. So far the promos for S2 look good but still, I'm nervous. More than once I gotten new content in a canon that not only did not improve upon the existing material but also dashed my love and interest in it. *Sigh* fingers crossed.

Anyway, moving on. Randomness from around the world I found interesting:
Notorious skyjacker "Dan Cooper" aka D.B. Cooper might have finally been identified (according to this Popular Science article anyway, there has been nothing officially reported that I can find.)

Ethiopian wolves have been observed foraging for nectar and acting as pollinators for red hot poker flowers (scientific paper, Science.org article about it)

Video on how an accessible no-tape wrapping hack for the upcoming (or any) holiday season (mp4 link from tumblr)

And, last but not least [community profile] ficinabox art recs (creators still anon, somehow I mucked up a few of the links when posting to the comm but I think they're all fixed now - fandoms are DC comics, Doctor Who, Dungeon Meshi, Dream SMP, Firefly, Hamlet, Original Work, SVSS, Star Trek: Lower Decks and X-files)

DC
- Flying (Coloring Page) Summary: KonJay coloring page (great expressions on both Jason and Kon-el in this)
- Cass (stunning)
- Nightwing and Haley Crochet Doll Patterns Summary: Crochet Nightwing and Haley (Bitewing) dolls and patterns to make them. (adorable crochet plus patterns! How cute!)

Doctor Who
- [Art] Hold On (Two and Jamie, adorable)
- [Art] My Best Enemy (Three and Delgado!Master, the look on the Master's face here is priceless)

ダンジョン飯 | Dungeon Meshi | Delicious in Dungeon
- haircare is very important Summary: Falin is excited to volunteer and help Marcille with her hair when Chilchuck is not around. For Marcille, it feels different when Falin does it. (lovely and sweet)

Dream SMP
- Pig Techno and Crowza On An Adventure Summary: Pictures of pig Techno and Crow Philza in crochet form. (Honestly, I don't know this fandom but saw it was crochet so had to click and it's adorable)

Firefly
- [art] From the Sketchbook of Simon Tam (three sketches, I really love the one of River)

Hamlet
- Hamlet Coloring Pages (Ophelia and Horatio coloring pages, very cool)
- Hamlet Costume Designs Summary: Costume designs for characters from Hamlet. (Hamlet and Ophelia, nicely detailed)

Original Work
- better kept in secret (absolutely gorgeous pirate captain/navy captain nemesis art)
- Be Nice To Your Printer! Summary: A poster tacked to the office noteboard regarding printers (hilarious!)
- [Art] Tiny Witch With a Tiny Familiar Summary: An autumn witch clad in autumn leaves. (leaf art (leaves + art?), stunning)

人渣反派自救系统 - 墨香铜臭 | The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System - Mòxiāng Tóngxiù
- Shen Yuan and the merman (lovely AU)

Star Trek: Lower Decks
- Boldly Go! Summary: A propaganda poster put together by an overworked Starfleet Comms Officer who didn't check what her model's quote translated to before she pushed the Cetacean's recruitment posters live. (this made me laugh)

X-Files
- From Above Summary: Digital Art based on the episode Revelations (really amazing imagery)

It's holiday love meme time again! I posted my name there, please everyone go add yours so we can spread the love!

holiday love meme 2024
my thread here

(I forgot the coding for how to have [archiveofourown.org profile] donutsweeper show up and spend ages trying a zillion different things before remembering I'd put how when I crossposted the meme here last year. It's "@ then the username then . then ao3" without the spaces in case anyone else needs it. And just now noticed there was a link on the meme to follow how to do as well. Sigh. Brains, I have them.)

Recently finished another oven mitt and am now out of cotton so I can't do more of those. I have a blanket ongoing but I'm feeling the crafting 'want-something-different' itch so I want to start something new but I'm not sure *what* ssssssigh.

Anyway, have some [community profile] recthething recs (all mdzs/untamed fic recs)

Second Summer by Anonymous (152k)
Summary Snippet: A year after the mysterious death of the Jin heir, Lan Wangji runs across the secret, long-lost, amnesiac love of his life while on a night-hunt. (A fascinating canon divergent some people live/some people die not exactly a fix it AU)

Watch me ignite it by tawaen (10k)
Summary: The news spreads quickly across the cultivation world – Wen Ruohan is dead and his murderer declared himself the new leader of the Qishan Wen sect. Wei Wuxian is described as a demon, as a brutal warlord, as a threat to the very existence of the cultivation world. He is also, unfortunately, the most attractive person Lan Wangji has ever met. (interesting canon divergent AU, almost more of a set up then full story, but excellent read)

had a marvelous time ruining everything by livinginaworldofnoise (8k)
Summary Snippet: 5 times wangxian's feral kittens get in the way of lan wangji proposing + 1 time they help (cute modern au fluff)

This: Utterly ignoring everything happening in the US and the 'real world' for the sake of my sanity.... Happy 15th Anniversary to Archive of our Own!! (a few days date) Apparently it went into open beta on 14 November 2009. (AO3's celebration post). I got an account for yuletide that year, mine is one day younger then open beta's (created on the 15th, acct #1165 though, so pretty dang early all things considered.) Hilariously, on the 17th I got a notif from LJ, celebrating my blog there's 17th birthday, so it's just social media celebrations all over the place this month. (I looked up my dreamwidth, I knew my account was from when it was still in closed beta, but I'm still acct #21636 here. I also missed celebrating its 15th as it was in April. Whoops.)

That: Today is also the anniversary of Calvin and Hobbes (according to this tweet and wikipedia anyway). Happy 39th!

The Other Thing: Son has been using my old igloo playmate cooler for his lunches at work, as I did when I lifeguarded during summers in school. It developed a small crack today. It'll still be usable for a bit yet but is probably nearing it's end (and frankly it has seen better days, it's schmutzy and has some permanent dark spots) but I have to say, whatever it was I paid for it in the late 80s, I certainly got my money's worth. (and OMG, I just googled these and they basically haven't changed, the current 16qt hardshell blue ones they sell look almost exactly like my old ratty one)

Additionally, have last week's [community profile] recthething rec (a MDZS/Untamed fic, I think I missed posting some recs here but if I did, I lost them. Whoops)
Building it back, stone by stone and seal by seal by KizuKatana (134k)
Summary: It had been over 200 years since the war between cultivators left more than half the land ravaged and uninhabitable and the practice of cultivation punishable by death. Despite the risks of being caught as a practicing cultivator, Wei Wuxian took on the hunt of a dangerous yao that had destroyed a small village and killed all of the civilians. While searching for the demon, he encountered a mysterious cultivator dressed all in white. Wei Wuxian was excited to finally meet another cultivator, but instead of greeting him or making pretty much any conversation at all, the man attacked Wei Wuxian on sight. (I've been following fascinating AU for ages and it just completed on the 11th, the world building is amazing and all the characters ring true despite the setting differences. Excellent fic)

A Yuletide meme I spotted over at [personal profile] shadaras' journal. My Five Most Popular Yuletide Fics (by kudos) and then Five Fave Yuletide Fics (by vibes).

This list is somewhat interesting because kudos were not originally introduced to AO3, not until mid December 2010, so while my 2009 yuletide fics rank much higher in hits, they are lower in kudos. Add to that the way the greater MDZS-verse (MDZS Q and the donghua) snuck into Yuletide in 2020 despite MDZS and Untamed being too big so my five most popular yuletide fics (sorted by kudos) are probably slightly skewed but anyway, here they are:
My Five Most Popular (MDZS donghua, MDZS Q, Spinning Silver, The Losers and Lethal Weapon (TV)) when sorted by kudos and a brief comparison to those when sorted by hits
Frame of Fearsome Symmetry for oneiriad. 3.7k words, MDZS donghua
Summary: When, in a combination of irony and revenge, Wei Wuxian took Wen Zhuliu's core and crushed it, he hadn't expected the result. (Canon divergent from episode 15) 495 kudos / 3,787 hits (2020 yuletide)

How to Thrive in the Cloud Recesses for ChristyCorr. 2k words, MDZS Q
Summary: Wei Wuxian had thought that every copy of 'How to Survive in the Cloud Recesses' had been destroyed. He was wrong. (referencing e4 of MDZS Q) 487 kudos / 2,086 hits (2020 yuletide)

Laden with Happiness (and Tears) for whetherwoman. 1.1k words, Spinning Silver - Naomi Novik
Summary: Miryem’s celebration of her first Shabbat in the Staryk lands after being married was a little different than her previous ones. 401 kudos / 3310 hits (2018 yuletide)

Glistering Within the Grey for ellen_fremedon. 592 words, Spinning Silver - Naomi Novik
Summary: Being one of the two servants assigned to serve the Queen was meant as a slight; it turned out to be anything but. 348 kudos / 1992 hits (2018 yuletide madness)

Threaded with Shadows and Light for Minim Calibre (minim_calibre). 1.8k words, The Losers (2010)
Summary: The fact that Jensen woke Cougar up when he returned home in the middle of the night was not a surprise. However, the fact he was carrying a baby was. 347 kudos / 2,636 hits

and if ignoring the madness one and only looking at the main collection then the 5th is:
Daedalus at Sunset for jedi_penguin. 2.4k workds, Lethal Weapon (TV)
Summary: When things go wrong at the courthouse Martin finds himself in the position to protect Trish. It's at a cost to himself, but one he doesn't mind paying. 318 kudos / 3058 hits

(sorting by hits' order is 2009's Lost and Found (White Collar, 6,560 hits but only 255 kudos, 5.2 words), 2012's Missions Of Most Importance (Covert Affairs, 5,771 hits, also 255 kudos, 1.4kwords), 2009's Pear-Shaped (White Collar, 4,313 hits, 108 kudos, 1k words), Madness 2009's The Vigil (White Collar, 3,932 hits, 96 kudos, 482 words), 2016's Bandaged Moments (The Losers (2010), 3,922 hits, 262 kudos, 2.7k wods) and then Frame of Fearsome Symmetry)

Trying to pick my favorite fics, however, was hard. According to AO3 I've 142 yuletide fics and while about 30 of those are in madness, that leaves a lot in the main collection to consider. So, I perused the pages AO3 pulled out a few out that I really liked/found interesting to write/had fun with/whatever:
(DMBJ, Tremors, Peacemakers (2003), The Shadow/Captain America, White Collar, and two cracky ones)
2021's Palmoscopy for laireshi. 1.2k words, DMBJ. Summary: It was so loud that Xiaoge found it difficult to sleep. (I liked this one because it made me really think how *would* Xiaoge refer to himself? And eventually I settled on not having it by his POV but without him naming himself in it at all)

2020's Out of the Way Assignments and Astrophysics for escritoireazul. 3.8k words, Tremors (1990). Summary: Trylos Seven was a sparsely populated, mostly ignored, and exceptionally boring part of space. When Rhonda had been assigned to monitor the observation post there she'd expected she'd spend a boring term collecting and correlating data. She was wrong. (The request was for Tremors in space and I had a lot of fun re-imagining that as the setting)

2017's The Uncertain Dawn for Settiai. 11k words, Peacemakers (2003)
Summary: Badly injured, Finch collapses outside of Katie's place, sparking the investigation into how he got there and what happened to him. (one of the longest things I've written, a full casefic for yuletide for a request that had gone unfulfilled for about a decade. Tiny, tiny fandom but it made the recip so happy. It was also to try to make it as accurate as possible for 1870/80s Old West)

2013's The Scrappy Someday for Llwyden ferch Gyfrinach (Llwyden). 1.1k, The Shadow and Captain America crossover.
Summary: Lamont came across people from all walks of life in his work as the Shadow but only a few that impressed him enough that he wanted to meet them again. (The Shadow crossing paths with tiny!Steve, fun!)

2009's Lost and Found for featherjean (joyfulfeather). 5.2k words, White Collar
Summary: Peter and Neal are asked to look into a unusual case at the Frick museum, only to learn that things are not what they seem. (I haven't been back to NYC for decades, but the Frick was my favorite museum and I loved setting a case there)

Also going to throw in two utter cracktastical fun fics because why not:
2019's That Thing You Didn't Manage to Write for merriman. 1.3k words, multifandom: Dash Sword Slash and the Defenders of Everything (YouTube), Yuletide (Anthropomorphic), AO3 Tags, Fanfic Exchanges
Summary: There was a fanfic exchange coming up and if it went like it usually did that meant people would be writing porn for it. Jace Cockblock and the Creep Crew planned to put a stop to that. (short youtube crack!vid led to crackier fic, playing with an exchange's tagcloud is always fun)

and 2017's 01000010 01101001 01101110 01100001 01110010 01111001 00100000 01000110 01101001 01100011 for Sealgirl. 6738 or 1016 words, depending how you look at it. Numbers (Anthropomorphic) fandom.
This fic's first chapter is the binary version of the second chapter. It was the first (and only) time I wrote a fic before the exchange even open. It's utter crack and best explained by my author's note: Written for Yuletide for Sealgirl who requested the fandom of Numbers (anthropomorphic) and the characters 0 and 1 and asked "I'm not sure what to say about this fandom, except good luck! If you can, please try to stick to just these numbers. Not sure if that is a bit unrealistic." Complete and utter crack.

We had snow on halloween here, unpleasant, but not as bad as the infamous halloween snowstorm that dumped nearly 3' of snow a bunch of years back. It didn't stick, but it's cold and raw here now :( but it's November so I guess that tracks. The weather did mean I didn't get a chance to try to find any discounted halloween chocolates so I couldn't celebrate my favorite holiday, half-price candy day.

Daylight Saving's Time ends tomorrow here in the US, so it's time to set clocks back an hour. I hate time changes generally and this year's especially (gestures vaguely at the US's political everything happening right now) is going to suck. Sigh.

Have two weeks of [community profile] recthething recs (MDZS/Untamed fics and tumblr art from DMBJ, Guardian, LOTR, MCU, MDZS, Merlin, Sherlock Holmes and X-Files)

herald of spring by soleiloquies (28k)
Summary: After an unfortunate run-in with Wen Chao, Wei Wuxian finds himself trapped in the infamous Burial Mounds, where he stumbles upon a mystery that weaves his and a dragon’s fates together irrevocably. (really enjoyed this interesting canon-era sentient(ish) burial mounds AU)

All That Glitters by Witch_Nova221 (25k)
Summary: When Lan Wangji discovers he could shapeshift into a dragon, in a world where shapeshifters are feared and hunted, he has to leave his home and his family for their safety and his own. With the world at war though, he cannot just hide away and do nothing so instead dedicates himself to stealing the bribe money sent by those who would force their way into power.

His treasure soon attracts the attention of a small black crow who steals some of the vast fortune he has stolen but, as he realises that the crow is more than it seems, he finds himself not only reacquainted with an old friend but also drawn back into the world he has tried to leave behind. (interesting shapeshifting AU)

20ish hours left to signup for yuletide! They close at 9pm UTC on the 18th (which is 4pm CDT). There's currently 1070 signups, there's been quite the jump in numbers over the last day or two, I assume it'll be 1200-1300 by the time signups close. (Humourously, it jumped from 1058 signup in the time it took me to write and post this.)

I cleaned out the junk drawer the other day. Here have a sign of how old I am (probably/possibly understandable only by fellow americans but...)

Many of you are probably already aware, but the internet archive was taken down by a ddos attack last week. They've managed to get the wayback machine back up, but it's currently read only. The rest of the archive is currently still down but they've posted they hope to get everything back up soon.

Political news has been quite the shitshow here in the US of late (well, *more* of a shitshow of late) but it made me smile to see that Jimmy Carter's been able to fulfill his dream of voting in the current election (early voting in Georgia began yesterday), two weeks after celebrating his 100th birthday. I met him once, ages ago when he came to my college for an event and he was so kind and down-to-earth, it's nice to see him be able to accomplish what he's said was his final wish.

Last but not least, here's two weeks' worth of [community profile] recthething recs (all mdzs/untamed fic recs):

grimoire by WithLoweredVoices (95k)
Summary: ‘Alright, fine,’ huffs Wei Ying, blowing out his cheeks. He adjusts his grip on the smooth hilt of the sword, as cold as wet stone beneath his palm. ‘How do I give this back to you?’
‘I must trade with you something of equal worth,’ says the strange man.
‘Uh. Okay.’ Wei Ying rubs his forehead with his free hand. ‘How about your name? Your real name.’ In case he needs to file a police report or stalk this beautiful, scary man on google or something.
The man looks even more angry. He pulls his shoulders back and draws himself to his full height, which is rather impressive and forces Wei Ying to tip his chin up slightly.
‘My name is Lan Zhan,’ the man says. ( fascinating 'dark academia (but not) au')

King’s Shadow by Solmae (13k)
Summary: On the verge of a war with the powerful Wen Kingdom, the Lan Kingdom calls in an old debt and seeks a marriage alliance with the Jiang Kingdom. The Jiang Kingdom sends its prince in answer, but is he truly an olive branch of friendship, or a clever assassin in disguise? To uncover the truth and thwart a potential assassination attempt, Lan Wangji poses as his older brother to court the Jiang prince in Lan Xichen’s stead. However, in more ways than one, there may be more to the situation than meets the eye... (cute mistaken/hidden identity royal!au)

Gardens and Fields by Ashura (16.5k)
Summary: Lan Qiren quells him with his most forbidding glare. ‘This is a matter which requires delicacy, which is why I struggle to believe I am actually requesting Wei Wuxian’s assistance. But,’ he finishes wearily, ‘it also requires someone who can reliably identify the cultivation techniques. And preferably someone not directly connected to Gusu Lan. Which leaves but one viable option, however much I may dislike it.’ (nice post-canon fic that deals with some of the mess that would have been left behind after Su She's downfall)

Yuletide thing number 1 - In what has somehow unexpectedly become an annual thing for me, I compiled a list of all the short (under 30k) stories, poems and blogposts and whatnot in the yuletide tagset. It's here. (I'm not sure I'll keep doing these, not only since its the only compilation anyone's done this year but also because it just takes so long.)

Yuletide thing number 2 - Signups just opened!! Very exciting. Although now I need to truly decide if I just want the three I nominated or also fourth I threw in at the last minute or some other interesting thing(s) from the tagset. And, you know, also figure out my offers. Sigh.

Have two weeks of [community profile] recthething recs (2 MDZS/Untamed fics, tumblr art/animation from 9-1-1, Merlin, MDZS/Untamed, Queen (Freddy Mercury) and Sherlock Holmes):

Summary: It was either a kidnapping or an invitation to a sleepover; Wei Wuxian honestly couldn't tell which. (nice little WWX and NHS moment)

On a night just like this one ... by DizziDreams (3k)
Summary Snippet: “I was thinking,” Wei Wuxian interrupted, “that I could tell you about the White Wanderer.” (delightful post-canon story of WWX and the juniors (and WWX pranking/scaring the Juniors))

Yuletide nominations close tomorrow (give or take just shy of 17 hours from when I post this). Don't forget to get yours in, if that is something that interests you.

There's already a lot of interesting things on the promo post. This year I posted a promo for one of the fandoms I'll be requesting, a four panel webcomic by David Malki! (the exclamation point is part of his name) In which a Visitor proves a Nuisance. What I posted over there was

What is it, in summary?: A vaguely old-timey looking man is saved from a time-traveling assassin by Sully the Time Cop, something that is apparently a frequent occurrence.

What do you love about it?: It's so random and weird. The contrast between the "present" and the time travelers is great along with the implication that it is something that happens over and over again.

What sort of things are you likely to request for it?: The time travelers wear diving helmets and one uses a sickle while the other has an energy weapon. Why? How does the time assassination/assassination prevention attempts even work. Are they from different centuries or the same one? I am planning on nominating Sully, Time Traveling Assassin and Worldbuilding. (I also wound up nominated the muttonchopped man since someone said they were interested.)

I also (mostly) repeated last year's noms for All Souls and Nightmare Cafe and The Vampires (but since I already got an amazing worldbuilding fic for The Vampires I switched out the worldbuilding slot for another character. I haven't decided if I'll request it again but since it's likely I'm the only one who'll think of nominating it, I figured better safe than sorry.)

I crocheted some more bunny friends (here's pics of the one from earlier plus three others)

and
The small ones are very small, each about the size of the heads of the others.

And, last but not least, two weeks of [community profile] recthething recs (2 MDZS/Untamed fic recs and from tumblr The Magic Schoolbus, MDZS, and Sherlock Holmes art and a DS9 vid)
Art:
The Magic Schoolbus
- you think you’re going to have a normal field trip and she shows up (gorgeous Ms Frizzle and Liz art)

MDZS/The Untamed
- "Wei Ying, come back to Gusu with me" Summary: Lan Wangji embroidery because I love to make myself sad (this is *embroidery*!! Incredible)
- 残された。。。||Left behind (Three panel comic of the Nie brothers, oh my heart)
- great news! wei wuxian has died! (powerful two panel animation)
- Fraught sunshot kisses, because that’s what I’m feeling today and every day (desperate but gorgrous wwx/lwj kiss)
- Pretending these little freaks are in a wholesome ghibli film. (various characters reimagined, wonderfully done!)

Sherlock Holmes
- Hearth and home (gorgeous Granada Holmes take on that particular RDJ/Jude law bts photo)
- Sherlock and Watson, dancing request. Sherlock needs to study this new dance (for reasons of solving the murder in the ballroom, of course) so the doctor is helping ♥ (so sweet)
- "Good old Watson! You are the one fixed point in a changing age." (lovely illustration of a novel quote)

Vid:
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
- I’m in a little bit of trouble. And I’m in real deep… (wonderful Gashir vid)

the MDZS/Untamed fics:
solid ground by notsofluffyunicorn (2.7k)
Summary: “I never felt like I had… like I had solid ground to land on.” Wei Wuxian said softly. “It always just felt like if I messed up even once that everything I had would be taken from me.” He takes in a deep breath, tears stinging in his eyes. “But you… oh, my love. You have given me everything. You, A-Yuan. A life traveling with just the three of us. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted. I can never thank you for that. You are my solid ground.” (soft and sweet canon-era no-war AU)

Gentians on Doorways by gentil-minou (Flyingsuits) (34k)
Summary: After a decade of living abroad, Lan Zhan returns to China. But Lan Zhan is out of his depth in a land that was once his home. After all, there's no step-by-step guide for when your mother dies. As he sorts through her affairs and grapples with his grief, he meets Wei Ying, his mother's friend and the artist she'd commissioned to illustrate a book of nursery rhymes. And as he and Wei Ying strike a partnership of their own, Lan Zhan wonders if he ever knew his mother at all. (This story is slow and sad and and wonderful look at grief and moving on. Written for the MDZS Reverse Big Bang there is gorgeous art for the mentioned children's book included.)

Summer weather returned with a vengeance over the weekend, but thankfully it looks like it'll finally break soon. I am so ready for fall.

In a follow up to my last post, I just saw that [personal profile] trobadora has posted the excellent news that the 'Sherlock Holmes & Related Fandoms' has been reinstated as a metatag and been decoupled from Sherlock (TV). Upon perusal, it looks like now it is the top tier tag and the majority of Holmesian fandoms (importantly, including Sherlock (TV)) are subtags of it. So now clicking on tag and excluding Sherlock (TV) will work to actually exclude the Sherlock fics and shows 17k works. It's not perfect because there seem to be a few Holmesian fandoms missing (for example, only the Sherlock Holmes (US TV 1954) fics that have been tagged with both that and the 'related fandoms' tag are showing up, for some reason that particular fandom doesn't seem to be included in the tag tree) but STILL. So happy they reversed this decision.

Here's the beginning of the official AO3 tumblr's post explains the walkback:
"Tag wrangling is, on the whole, a fluid process. It’s meant to be, because the way language is used and the way tags are used change over time. We’re the first to admit that we don’t always get it right, and that we do sometimes make mistakes despite our best intentions. This is why wrangling decisions are not set in stone and are reevaluated periodically as circumstances change or as new information becomes available.

In light of the impact that removing the Sherlock Holmes & Related Fandoms metatag has had, we have put that metatag back in place."
I suspect support got inundated with complaints and I feel a little bad for them, but I'm just glad they listened to fandom on a whole about the subject and it looks like they'll be a little more cautious about changes like this from now on.

Anyway, moving on... It's almost yuletide! Nominations open Monday! The evidence post is already up. Time to think about what I'll be nominating! Thanks to some amazing luck, several of my recent repeating fandom requests were actually filled the last year or two so I need to come up with some new things. Decisions, decisions.

For no reason whatsoever I decided to crochet a little bunny

And here's this week's [community profile] recthething recs (2 MDZS/Untamed fic recs):
Lan Sizhui and the Whispers of the Lost by Vulpeculate (30k)
Summary: One morning, late in the winter of Lan Sizhui’s final year as a junior high student, he woke up alone. - Lan Sizhui faces a mystery close to home when a sudden disappearance puts his life into disarray. The secrets of the past and present will challenge him as he seeks to find what has taken his father. Who is the eccentric, inexperienced librarian who has taken up staff at Gusu Junior High School? What mysterious light glows from the inner walls of the Cloud Recesses? What lurks in the woods beyond town? Will Lan Sizhui and his friends find out the truth before it's too late? (fun YA styled modern-with-cultivation mystery AU)

Sunshot in Charcoal by Serpex (<1k)
Summary: Wei Wuxian remembers his past life. No one else does. He thinks that it will always be like that. But for a moment, hope festers in his heart as a vivid scene is born from Lan Sizhui's canvas. But, he's learned not to rely on foolish hopes even if he wants to. (poignant and slightly sad modern AU)

Hope everyone's having a good September! The hot weather here finally broke, which is nice but now there's all the outside work that I'd been putting off to do which is less nice. Tis the way of things, I guess.

SIGH, so a few days ago AO3 synned the Sherlock Holmes & Related Fandoms tag to the Sherlock (TV). On purpose. They stopped making '& related fandoms' and '- All Media Types' tags around 8 or 9 years ago but apparently actively started to try to do something about the existing ones only in the last year or so.

They synned it to the BBC adaption because it was the most commonly used specific tag and, apparently (based on chatter I've seen from AO3 tag wranglers in various discords) have absolutely no plans on changing that and don't seem to understand that people might have reasons for using the '& Related Fandoms' tags for anything other than getting more eyes on the tag. (And they seem annoyed and put out that people are complaining about it which I am just boggling at since it was a major change so of course people are going to send support messages about it.) I'm not going to send a message nor wade into that mindfield in discords or anything because I hate confrontation and am very very frustrated about it since when I used the tag it was because I was using aspects of one canon (usually the books) in another- i.e. re-imagining how a case from a book (or one that's merely mentioned in a book) would play out in one of the other canons (yes, sometimes Sherlock (TV) but also Without a Clue or The Great Mouse Detective or or or etc) and this way did not flood the book tag with non-book fics.

It's a moronic decision to synn it the way it did and I'm annoyed and removed the tag from nearly all of the works I used it on but oh well, it's done and seems like it won't be undone so there's nothing I can do about it. Anyway, just wanted to pass on the fact it was something AO3 did so if anyone follows me also used the tag they'll know about the change and can decide to retag or remove the tag if they wish.

Anyway, moving on. In honor of Yuletide noms opening the end of the week I crocheted a little hippo (for decades yuletide's irc/discord has had an anonymous beta finding system by people either changing their usernames to have hippo in it or grabbing the bot-induced hippo color+designation so people who need help canon DM the hippo the info and the hippo can ask for it publicly in chat while keeping the actual requestor's info private)

I've also forgotten to crosspost [community profile] recthething recs here for ages so have some MDZS/Untamed fic recs and tumblr art recs for Dracula, Macbeth, The Mummy, and Sherlock Holmes.

The Price of Forever by Witch_Nova221 (22k)
Summary Snippet: When Lan Wangji injures a unicorn, he learns the truth about the age-old traditions that his clan and the world have undertaken for generations. With a new friend to protect and the pressure of the world upon him, he knows he must pay a price, the cost of which is high on either side. (love the world building in this one)

Lan Jingyi’s Night Hunt Vlog #29 (Interrupted) by jiah (9k)
Summary: Teenager Lan Jingyi is a vlogger obsessed with the Yiling Patriarch, who's supposed to have died thirteen years ago under mysterious circumstances. Jingyi however is convinced there was a major conspiracy to take down the Yiling Patriarch, involving international secret societies, corrupt cultivator politics, and quite possibly aliens (one of these is true). While shooting a vlog with his friends in an abandoned town rife with resentful energy, they are rescued from fierce corpses by a rogue cultivator named Mo Xuanyu. Lan Wangji, for some unfathomable reason, keeps calling him Wei Ying. Jin Ling is irritated, Sizhui is acting weird, and Ouyang Zizhen keeps asking Hanguang Jun and Senior Mo about their sun signs. Meanwhile, there are traces of dark cultivation in Yi City. Are they getting closer to the truth behind the Yiling Patriarch? Or is there a different demonic cultivator playing cat and mouse with them? (delightful modern-with-cultivation AU take on part of the Yi City arc)

true gold fears no fire by defractum (82k)
Summary: Lan Wangji encounters a mysterious stranger on his rooftop. Alternatively, the Emperor of China has heard rumours of an intruder sneaking into the Forbidden City, a shadow that has eluded the best of his guards. (Alternatively, Wei Ying just really wanted a drink.) (This is a great Royalty AU story with intrigue and mystery that I've been following for close to four years and now that it was completed earlier this week, I can finally rec it)

Crimson leaves by barisan. (4.7k)
Summary: There is a world where Wei Wuxian could not take another word of slander towards a mother whose smile he couldn’t even remember, a father whose embrace he couldn’t recall the warmth of. A world where he could not take another beating, another misplaced punishment, another thoughtless insult. Perhaps he grows tired of fooling himself into thinking that he has a place in Lotus Pier. That he belongs. That he is wanted. Loved. (AU where WWX leaves the Jiang and winds up finding a home. Delightful.)
