I finished my hats for the homeless hat... and I kind of hate it. Not sure I'll try to do another, but if I do I'll only do one in the round rather than a flat and then sew together one. I need a new crochet project but I've been very indecisive about it. Something useful, yet utterly boring, like another pair of oven mitts? A blanket of some sort? I think I'll look for something I can watch Cdramas while making which limits what it'll be somewhat but I just keep scrolling ravelry and haven't found anything I really want to try.

I started and finished (all in under a day) the Target+Supermarket bags and air bubble strip runner rug and got a little more done on the plastic cordage rug:

Kato examines some of the plastic I cut into strips

many, many hours later that and more strips of plastic waste has been turned into cordage

Rug has been started (cordage has been added to as needed)
it take SO much plastic and SO much time, these kind of rugs take forever, but it's a neat craft and made out of what would be garbage so....

Supermarket bag rug, give or take 27"x16"

I love languages and reading about translation choices and it was fascinating to read about the attempts and difficulties of translating that tumblr post 'His wife has filled his house with chintz. To keep it real I fuck him on the floor' into numerous languages - the post is easiest to read if you have a tumblr acct here, but without an account it can be read here.

And speaking of tumblr, have an assortment of tumblr art recs from this week's [community profile] recthething rec (Doctor Who, Merlin, Sherlock Holmes, ST:TNG, SPN, The Blues Brothers and a Wallace & Gromit/Muppet Show crossover):

Doctor Who (2005)
- a cpt jack portrait (Jack Harkness was my fandom for a long time and this is great art of him)

Merlin
- a reminder of you (and me) (Morgana and Gwen, holy shit)
- off your feet Arthur sweeping Merlin off his feet (and into a kiss)

Sherlock Holmes
- do you think they explored each other’s bodies (JC Leyendecker inspired H/W)
- Local Detective tries to get out of doing his household chores by Charming his doctor, more at 11. (very sweet digital drawing of Holmes and Watson)
- THE SPECKLED BAND’S ENDING WAS WAY FUNNIER THAN I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE LIKE SHERLOCK YOU JUST KILLED A MAN (Watson's face in particular in this doodle comic is just hilarious)

ST:TNG
- Showing my cat parts of the ship she has never seen: i think he would kill it on space tiktok (Data and Spot! Love it!)

Supernatural
- Quilted Portraits No. 2 of Baby, the Impala (gorgeous quilts! I am so impressed with these)

The Blues Brothers
- Jake and Elwood (excellent gouache painting of the brothers)

The Muppet Show/Wallace and Gromit crossover
- Happy International Dog Puppet Day! "I invented this holiday as an excuse to draw Gromit and Rowlf hanging out" (very fun!)
eta- totally forgot the reason I was making this post!

[archiveofourown.org profile] InklingDancer podficced an old (wow, 10 years old actually) Arrow double drabble of mine, "The Armor's Chink" and it's really well done, go give a listen!
donutsweeper: (Default)
In very exciting news [archiveofourown.org profile] Mousek podficced "Gone to the Mountain, See It Call to Thee" which was a ficlet I wrote last yuletide for the Hu Ge Eastern Airlines "Move Forward With Courage" Commercial. You can go give a listen to it here. (Of all my things to get podficced I have no idea why *this* one was chosen, but it's very exciting! and short at <2 minutes.)

Crafting-wise, I learned about a local group called Hats For the Homeless (one guess what its focus is) so I have decided to try crocheting a hat. I've never done one before. I might also start a new rug to experiment with using those plastic air pocket things that come in packages as the runner (after collapsing them, of course) and to use up all the supermarket plastic bags that have been living under my sink. (Do I need yet another rug, no, of course not but I also don't know if this will work so I guess that's okay.) Also debating what 'fun' sort of thing I can do. Oh wait, I also do have a plastic cordage rug in progress (making rope out of junk plastic like the wrappers papertowels 6pks come in and whatnot and then using that for the rug) so whoops, that'll be two rugs I don't need in the works.

Language learning-wise I haven't really liked Duolingo since it moved to the path format a year and a half ago and it keeps rejiggering its courses and I had been very close to quitting until I discovered a sort of trick that gives you a sort of old version of premium using Duolingo for Schools and I thought I'd pass on what it is and how to set it up in case anyone's in a similar place:

It's not everything premium offers now, not the tab with the exercises you need work on and you still pay gems for certain things, but you have endless mistakes with no worries about having to quit a lesson or pay if you make five mistakes. I had gotten to levels where I was never able to get through a lesson without paying gems to replace hearts and it was stressing me out so much so this works well for me.

To get the trick to work you might have to do it in a browser vs in the app (I'm not sure, I used a browser since that's how it was explained to me to get it) but what you do is you just click on the schools symbol and create a classroom. You don't need to do anything with the classroom once it's created or anything, just create it, close that window and then refresh on the original duolingo page to use it or open up the app. I think I also went into settings and turned off emails about classroom stuff but that was it. (You can also just join a classroom I think but creating one takes a second and is very easy.)

From then on you can use the app or the browser and you won't have to worry about running out of hearts ever again!

And, as always, here's this week's [community profile] recthething recs (2 mdzs/untamed fics)

divine, divine by sunflowersfield (3k, locked to archive)
Summary Snippet: Lan Zhan accidentally adds assembly service to his furniture order and meets Wei Ying in the process. (short but sweet modern meet-cute)

The Lost Prince by hmmmmmmmm (40k)
Summary Snippet: After the fall of the Wei dynasty at the hands of the Wen, the emperor’s infant son is lost and presumed dead, along with the rest of the imperial family. Years pass and young Jiang Wuxian, with his two siblings Jiang Yanli and Jiang Cheng, leave Yiling to meet their destiny and search for the reason behind their father’s brutal murder, all while attempting to avoid enemies they didn’t know they had. (fascinating royalty AU with interesting world building and set up but as only the first of (a hopefully eventually continuing) series, it ends rather abruptly)

Here's some amazing art from multifandomdoodle:

Original Work - Small collection of birds - Summary: Some quick doodles of tits (the birds) you can spot in Catalonia (six truly excellent tits)
- Where the Glitch Begins (absolutely incredible cyberspace mage)
- [ART] Pieces of Eight - Summary: Legend says if you beat her in an arm wrestle, she'll give you some treasure from her chest. (incredible pirate creature)
The Untamed - Lotus Pier (lovely landscape)
Word of Honor - You Good? (hilarious Ye Baiyi drawing)
- Red (gorgeously drawn Luo Fumeng, the clothing in particular is amazing)
Crossover: Tron and Tetris - TeTron - Summary: The Tetris blocks escape their game.

and some things from yuletide that either don't really have fandoms, can be read canon blind, or are 5 minute fandom type things:

Duolingo Welsh Course - Mae Owen yn hoffi pannas pinc (Owen likes pink parsnips) (1.6k) Summary Snippet: If Owen’s nightclub is selling parsnips, how’s business going? Did they expand the business to Antarctica and that’s why Owen is there eating parsnips? Do they others have to confront the dragon that ate Owen? (no Welsh knowledge needed, just a hilarious story with a bit from wtfduolingo thrown in)
花的游吟 | Le Vrai Où (Short Film) - A Different Version of an Old Song (2k) Summary: “What about you?” the bartender asks. “Have you decided?” (while the fandom is only a 10 min short film this can be read fandom blind, as it's a fascinating AU take of an immortal singer meeting a bartender over and over)
Cyberpunk adaptation of Laughing in the Wind (Cfensi April Fool Post) - what you've taken (5k) Summary: When Zhongze Ning's wife goes too far in a bid for power, Ning makes a dangerous gamble in an attempt to protect what remains of her family. (Based off a post this cyberpunk wuxia f/f fic is a fascinating read)
花西子《【白月光与朱砂痣】穿越千年才找回跟你在一起的回忆》广告片 | Florasis "Sapphic Lipstick" Commercial - Memories Of You (3k) Summary: When Qi Xiaxia touched the stranger's hand, the memories came flooding back. (a sweet reincarnation f/f fic based off a 30 second lipstick ad)
镇魂 | Guardian - priest - water, sparks in the eyes and gone (4.7k) Summary: [Shen Wei requests approval for activation of unit: king_6h05t] I need you to approve this so I can help you. [Zhao Yunlan has approved Shen Wei’s request.] Thank you. Hold on, I’ll be there soon. (Amazing scifi AU with several clever nods to canon but still enjoyable without having read the book)
Knitting (Anthropomorphic) - Curses, foiled again (3k) Summary: The residents of Yarn Stash Cabinet are concerned about their crafter’s holiday knitting plans. (utterly adorable)
crossover: 17776: What Football Will Look Like in the Future - Jon Bois and Expert and Judgment on Markers to Deter Inadvertent Human Intrusion... - Sandia Labs - Long-Term Projects (2k) Summary: Even after radiation stops being able to kill, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant doesn't offer a lot of entertainment. What keeps drawing people back? A sense of duty to a lost future? Reenacting old mistakes? Boredom? It's probably mostly boredom. (only a vague amount canon knowledge needed for this one, but it's a fascinating look at humanity and how things just don't change, until they do)

Also, wanted to suggest to any fanfic writers out there to put a blanket permission statement on their AO3 profile (and, if desired, add yourself to the blanket permission database) because sometimes you get amazing surprises. Earlier this month [archiveofourown.org profile] tinypinkmouse made podfics of four (FOUR!) of my Guardian ficlets and the other day I got a notif that my cookie monster cookie clicker fic was recorded for Voiceteam Mystery Box 2021 ([community profile] voiceteam). So exciting!

(I don't actually know anything about the blanket permission database or how to submit yourself, not sure if I did so and forgot or if my permission statement is so old someone else added it in but I assume it does make checking to see if someone gives permission easier.)

Laying claim to the various stories I wrote for Yuletide. For a fandom I'd never written in before White Collar got a lot of love from me. And it's obvious I am a hurt/comfort junkie after looking at these more carefully. Four of the five are h/c! I had a lot of fun during Yuletide Madness, picking up a pinch hit and three other prompts, which made poor [livejournal.com profile] _medley_'s life very busy as I kept begging her to beta, but the results hopefully made some people very happy.
