Challenge #13: Make a rec list!

I've been reccing in the weekly community recpost over at [community profile] recthething every week for over two and a half years now. Most often it's two or three lesser known or new MDZS/Untamed fics that I've come across but about once a month or so it's sometimes else random like recs from exchanges that just revealed or tumblr art. So here's a collection of some of my favorites of my recced art from tumblr (when possible, I use links that don't require tumblr accounts, but there isn't always one) from the past year. Fandoms are Addams Family, Batman, DCU, DMBJ, Greek Myths, Guardian, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, MDZS/Untamed, Merlin, The Mummy, The Muppets, Nirvana in Fire, Pacific Rim, The Princess Bride, Sherlock Holmes, numerous Star Treks, Supernatural and The X-files.

Addams Family: - INKTOBER 2020: #30 - Ominous (The whole family, being as Addamsy as expected and hoped for)

Batman: Robin Dick Grayson showing up to the crime scene but instead of his lil boots he’s wearing these - Robin in kermit the frog slippers. Adorable.

DCU: bruce is a tired dad (Bruce and Diana Pierce, utterly hilarious)

DMBJ - please don't go (I love you so) (absolutely gorgeous Hei Xiazi/Xiao Hua fanart)

Greek Myths (retold as chickens) - part one and part two (I think Egg-amemnon is my favorite, tied closely by Diom-egg-es)

Guardian
- after all this time... my first guardian fanart... and it's those other guys (freezer-room hostage scene our beloved tho) (Guo Changcheng and Chu Shuzhi, wow)
- Hei Pao Shi (very evocative Black Robed Envoy)
- Sometimes, Da Qing thinks he can nearly recall the hands that fastened the collar around his neck. (oh my heart)

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy/Douglas Adams - Don't Panic! It's Just The 'Cosmic Cutie' From The HitchHiker's Guide To The Galaxy (Knitted! So well done)

MDZS/The Untamed
- They are very in love (WWX and LWJ, and they look so happy too)
- the grandmaster of demonic cultivation (WWX in his grandmaster glory)
- I Want my Wei Ying Back, with apologies to Jon Klassen (absolutely hilarious NSFW comic)
- MDZS mapped to Gustav Klimt’s piece 'Medecine' (seriously amazing)

Merlin
- THE ONCE AND FUTURE KINGS (Absolutely gorgeous and tender)
- Dawn (amazing art of Arthur post battle)
- unlabeled pencil sketch (intricately detailed sketch of Merlin and Arthur riding up to the castle)
- The Young Dragonlord "made these as kidlit illustration practice while i was rewatching bbc merlin" (really adorable, I wish they'd made a whole book's worth)

The Mummy - Happy 24th Anniversary to the movie, ever! ✨ (Adorable drawings of most of the cast)

The Muppets: “...distinct, huh? More like extinct.” - Gonzo, in all his sartorial glory

Nirvana in Fire - Set of four Nirvana in Fire illustrations (really wonderful art of Mei Changsu, Mu Nihuang, Xiao Jingyan, etc)

Pacific Rim - Mako Mori (my beloved) sketch in honour of Pacific Rim’s 10th anniversary! (really love the color usage in this)

The Princess Bride - as you wish (the grandfather and grandson, very sweet)

Sherlock Holmes - Sherlock Crowmes (Sherlock Holmes as a crow, adorable)

Star Trek: The Animated Series - The Animated Series redraw Meowterprise series (Meowterprise = everyone is a cat, check out the tag for it)

Star Trek: TOS
- i'm sorry but women are so much more fun to draw than men (gorgeous monochrome Uhura)
- Starfleet standard issue ponchos (cute Kirk and Spock sketch followed by a hilarious comic)

Star Trek: DS9 I think the turbolift is stuck… (Hilarious 30 second DS9 animation with many of the characters)

Supernatural - The Winchester Brothers (brilliant use of shadows in these watercolor paintings)

X-Files - im watching x files again (Mulder and Scully, love this)

Challenge #4: IceBreaker Challenge!

In most fannish circles people call me donut, donutsweeper or ibble (a holdover from yuletide's irc, but the name I use on some exchange discords). I've been in and out of fandom for a billion years (aka usenet days), often with some sort of donut related username but it's been donutsweeper since early 2007. Outside of fannish things I crochet and make knotted rugs.

Challenge #7: Make a list of fannish and/or creative resources. Post your answer to today’s challenge in your own space and leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I've shared this on Snowflake numerous times through the years, but I have been collecting research and resource links for ages and there is currently over 16k of of them compiled into 11 masterposts:
Links occasionally die or need updating so please comment on the appropriate post if any updating or correcting is needed and I am always on the look out to add to the lists so if you have a resource I missed please comment on the appropriate post so I can add it.

For easy bookmarking purposes links to the 11 posts are compiled into this masterpost.

Challenge #1: Update your fandom information.

Challenge #2: In your own space, set yourself some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I checked, but didn't need to update my fandom info anywhere. All my accounts are ancient but I haven't changed anything so they're not out of date.

As for goals....

It order of them possibly actually being fulfilled:

Having the combination of time and brainpower to reorganize and update my useful links posts. I haven't been updating it as often as I should and have quite the backlog of links to add. I also need to check to see if all the old links are still valid (all 15k or so of them *SIGH*) probably split up the biggest post but have never had the energy to do so, but at least adding in the new links will be a start.

I want to rec something every week at [community profile] recthething's community rec post. I've managed it for over 2 years now (about 28 months of every week and sporadically before that) and would love to continue the trend. It's been harder of late but here's hoping I can always have the time and luck to find great stuff to share there.

I would like to write (and post) something outside of an exchange. That's been a goal every year I've done Snowflake (and many years prior to it) and I rarely manage it, but rarely is better than never (which used to be the case) so who knows, maybe this year will be a year I do. I do have an old WIP I just started revisiting.....

Non-fannishly, and least unlikely, I should look into the local craft/crochet scene here or at least find if anywhere would be interested in donated knotted rugs or crocheted blankets.

Challenge #13

In your own space, rec three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I have been making recs at [community profile] recthething's weekly Community Recs Posts (which are put up every Thursday and findable by this tag here) for more than a year and a half now and had a lot of fun doing so. I tend to do new or lesser known MDZS/The Untamed fic recs the majority of the time with a random tumblr art recs once every six or so weeks (whenever I compile enough, often they're a mix of Merlin, MCU, random scifi shows and Cdramas) and then also the occasional recs from random exchanges that just revealed. There's lots of other people who rec too, it's definitely worth checking out!

Here's some recent favorites I recced there:
Starting with tumblr art (Addams Family, B5, Merlin, MDZS and Sherlock Holmes):

Addams Family:
- INKTOBER 2020: #30 - Ominous (The whole family, being as Addamsy as expected and hoped for)
Babylon 5:
- Lennier and Delenn (just darling)
Merlin:
- Can’t think of a reasonable lie? Can’t rely on your king to make a helpful assumption? Try this tip: be a lil shit (hilarious comic)
- Merthur as Sheet Ghosts!!! (what it says on the tin, idk, it made me laugh)
MDZS/The Untamed:
- holding on to what little remains of wei wuxian (heartbreaking and lovely LWJ and A-Yuan work)
Sherlock Holmes:
- they’re probably bickering (Watson and Holmes, arm in arm. Wonderful)

and some MDZS/Untamed fic, a modern AU, a canon divergent AU and regular post-canon one:
something wicked by isabilightwood (13k)
Summary Snippet: Wei Ying runs a magical coffee shop where he helps the living work out their problems and makes coffee for ghosts. So when his best friend is turned into a bunny with a curse that can only be broken by True Love's Kiss, he tries to help Lan Zhan find The One. This would be so much easier if Wei Ying wasn't in love with him. (absolutely delightful)

The sparrow's curious song by Mhalachai (13k)
Summary: One day in Lanling, a little blind beggar picks Nie Huaisang’s pocket, which is the most interesting thing to happen to him in months. (AKA the one where Nie Huaisang adopts A-Qing.) (wonderful AU where NHS's revenge takes a bit of a sidestep)

Yunmeng Shuangjie Reconciliation Speedrun, Any %, No Yanlis, 8.5k by Mikkeneko (8.5k)
Summary: Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng's relationship has been strained since the confrontation at Guanyin Temple. It is a rift that might take years to heal, if it ever does. That is, unless some unscrupulous persons decide to meddle... (a plan to get WWX out of Jin Ling's life goes awry, a delightful read)

Whoops, so much for being on the ball with The Snowflake Challenge this year.

Challenge #1:
  • Transformative Works Policy: Has been on my AO3 profile for years: "I heartily welcome all transformative works, be they cover art, illustrations, fanmixes, podfics, translations, etc., just please send me a link so I can go revel in whatever awesome thing you've done."

  • Current Passion I am still making more knotted rugs than needed, crocheting more than advisable and watching a ridiculous amount of Cdramas whenever possible.

  • Where to Find Me: I've mostly stopped crossposting to LJ since I keep forgetting, but I'm here on DW with fic being posted to AO3 and I have a main tumblr and a side, mostly Cdrama-centric one and I'm on discord in a few places with the username ibble or donutsweeper or something similar.

  • Master List: I don't really have anything like that, I tag pretty well here so just look at the tags page to see everything. For example, all the recs I make at [community profile] recthething are crossposted here eventually and posts that include them have the 'recs' tag, crafting things have that tag and there's a masterpost of research/reference links at the top of my 'useful links' tag and basically all fic written in the last 10 years or so is over on AO3.

  • Anything Else: I don't know... donuts are awesome?

Challenge #2

In your own space, write a promo, manifesto or primer for your fave character, ship or fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Hmmm, I'm currently between obsessions at the moment? I think most people interested in DMBJ know of the ridiculously detailed episode guide I put together for Ultimate Note back in Sept 2021.

A little more recently, here's a link to the promo I wrote up late April about Under The Skin, my favorite Cdrama from last year. It's opening premise is that seven years ago an up-and-coming young artist, Shen Yi, was tricked into drawing the picture of a police captain which results in the officer's cover being blown and him being murdered. As a result Shen Yi leaves the art world and becomes a crime scene instructor at the police academy and sketch artist where he gets assigned that captain's former station and his old partner, Du Cheng, is not happy at all to see him.

As time goes on they learn to work together and trust each other and there's a little of this:

and a lot of this:

Eta - just realized, Under the Skin is now up on youtube for even easier viewing!

Challenge #1: In your own space, update your fandom information!
There's nothing really to update. I use different names in different places but most of my fannish things (AO3, DW and LJ) are donutsweeper and linked.

Challenge #2: In your own space, set some goals for the coming year.
I wanted to put myself out there more so I joined a new discord mentioned in a snowflake post.

Challenge #3: AUs
I love a good AU and fusion, I've read and written a ton, but I don't have any I'm pondering over at the moment.

skipping #4 and #5

Challenge #6: In your own space, Create something
Currently working on a collection of research links for historical Chinese clothing and perusing Chocolatebox prompts.

Challenge #7: In your own space, tell us about 3 fandom resources, spaces, or communities you use or enjoy.
[community profile] recthething - there's a great weekly rec post where people post random recs and there tends to be a decent number of other random posts.
[community profile] c_ent - all your Chinese entertainment needs
[community profile] fandomcalendar - great for learning about upcoming exchanges and the like

Also, even though I linked this the last two years, here's a link to the Masterpost of well over 900 useful links and resources. It's 10 posts worth of various links running the gambit for dozens of other ways to say common words like 'said' to resources to help write weapons, fights, injuries and then how to treat them, world building help, tons of history resources, "writers' guide to..." posts, etc.

Challenge #8: In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year
For the first time since 2015 or '16 I wrote something outside of an exchange. Three things, actually! Utterly shocking to me.

Challenge #9: Fandom Wrap
Fandomwise, I'm mostly in MDZS/Untamed and DMBJ frankencanons and dabble in others via exchanges and whatnot and I do the basics in them: read, kudos/comment, write, rec and chat about them. Nothing worthy of massive list making.

Challenge #10: Rec a fanwork you did not create.
I'm going to point everyone to [community profile] recthething's Thursday Rec Posts. I've been reccing every week there for over a year, mostly lesser known or new (at the time) MDZS/Untamed fics and sometimes other Cdrama fic but also sometimes tumblr art or recs from exchanges. The comm has a great tagging system so you can look and see if anyone's ever recced for a fandom you're interested in.

The challenge:
In your own space, tell us about 3 fandom resources you use or enjoy. (One or two is fine, especially if you're in a smaller fandom!) Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

For general resources I'm going to link to the masterpost of (now) 900 useful links and resources I posted for snowflake last year. (10 posts worth of various links running the gambit for dozens of other ways to say common words like 'said' to resources to help write weapons, fights, injuries and then how to treat them, world building help, tons of history resources, etc).

for specific resources:

In your own space, create a fanwork

Okay, so remember how how my goal for day 4 was to write and post something, anything, outside of an exchange/fest/whathaveyou?

GUESS WHAT? I DID!!!

Yesterday I spotted a tumblr post suggesting an idea for the saddest AU timeline for MDZS/The Untamed and before I knew it I had a ficlet about it on AO3. Then, after replying to some comments I started thinking and writing and then had another fic posted!! WTF. I don't even know who I am anymore. I haven't posted without putting something in that 'gift' or 'collections' spot since... 2015 I think? And now I've done it twice in two days. And they are:

The Worse Tomorrow Summary: Something terrible had happened at Koi Tower and the Jin Clan had been wiped out, practically overnight. (555 words)

The Day's Relentless Light Summary: A few years after Jin Ling dies Koi Tower is destroyed and the Jin Clan wiped out. Accusations are made and certain actions come to light. (1602 words)

Both are MDZS/Untamed fandom and pretty dark with canon level violence. The prompt (spoilery) was:
After Jin Guangyao has Jin Ling killed Jiang Cheng does the summoning ritual to bring Wei Wuxian back to get revenge. He does.

crochet babble
The Background: I've been crocheting on and off for decades but mostly stuck to afghans and scarves until last year's EAD Birthday Bash which had seals as a sort of theme and, specifically, a "Seal of Approval" which a few people requested and it gave me the idea of crocheting a seal and putting a crown on its head and posting a picture of that as a fill--the exchange is very much a tongue-in-cheek silly one so this would be a valid fill--and then did a few more animals and posed them a bunch of different ways for different fills.

I have a lot of random leftover yarn in my stash and my rug making (Amish knot rugs made with old sheets or t-shirts) results in having a box of random bits of cotton schmutz that can be used as filler so I bought some plastic safety eyes in case I wanted to do more animals and then the Battleship exchange started and decided to do some for it because tentacles +sea monsters +knitting gave me the idea of an octopus knitting (I don't knit, but I can do Tunisian crochet which can be threaded onto knitting needles and looks like knitting) and that morphed into doing three different octopus fills. Later a friend was talking about her love of mola molas and I offered that if she found a pattern I'd make her some. Then daughter asked for some animals and I also sent the big octopus and some tiny ones off to a different friend and before long I'd made probably two dozen different animals.

I always used patterns though and often had problems following them (or couldn't follow them at all) but I was getting better.

Then came 2021's EAD Birthday Bash. And "Moss Covered Unicorn" was a theme/prompt (in exchange tagsets sometimes tags wander so mods have to disambiguate them, often by adding something to the name but it needs to be distinct so 'Steve Rogers (MCU)' doesn't work but years ago one mod used 'Steve Rogers (Moss Covered Unicorn)' which does and its usage stuck) so I thought I'd try making a unicorn with green hooves, mane and tail. But none of the unicorn patterns worked (either the pattern failed or the shape wasn't right.) But one was close:

The pattern, as you can see, was for a sitting unicorn though, not standing, and I didn't like its mane or tail. So first I did two sets of the pattern for the rear legs and once attached it could stand the way I wanted it to, but then the head couldn't attach properly so I added a bit of a neck based off a way I'd seen it done in a different pattern and then messed around until the mane and tail came out right. Result:

I've never futzed with patterns on purpose before and have it work! And it emboldened me to totally come up with my own pattern for a cobra (for the idea of filling 'cobra kai osmosed' prompt) and crocheted a tube, filled it with the hard-fold-press-closed-thing coffee bags use to keep them closed for the poseability and then tweaked the bird wing pattern to create the look of the cobra's hood. Result (not a great pic but it shows it sort of):

I did well over a dozen different crochet projects for Birthday Bash, including tweaking a possum pattern to work better and then shrink it to have a baby for the 'mom' from the original pattern, but these are the two I'm really proud of and wanted to brag about.

Snowflake the Sixth
In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

I've been posting 5 or 6 MDZS/Untamed recs over at [community profile] recthething every few weeks for a few months now so there's 30 some odd, hopefully lesser known, recs there (most of which I've reposted here, findable via my recs tag. Picking out a few I've reread many, many times I'll rerec:

scatter and sunder by silversshadow (15k)
Summary: When Wei Wuxian dies at the Burial Mounds the backlash tears his soul apart. The cultivation world is left to watch the pieces. (book canon AU where some deaths were misreported and when WWX destroys the seal it shatters his soul and for years fragments/ghosts/echoes of him at various stages in life appear throughout the cultivating world and people's attitudes towards WWX change having to see these echoes of him over and over. A few of those scenes are so very touching.)

this house is loved by ribena (AO3 locked) 15k
Summary: They say Wei Wuxian died in the first siege of the Burial Mounds. Thirteen years later, Lan Wangji stumbles upon a shrine for the god of forgotten things. (Slightly sad, or perhaps melancholic at least, but lovely)

kick at the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight by AlfAlfAlfAlfAlf and tardigradeschool (75k)
Summary snippet: The young man blinks at him. Wei Yuan doesn’t spend much time staring at his own face in the mirror, but he knows his reflection well enough; the dark eyes, the straight nose, the round face that comes to a pointed chin. This boy could be his exact double. (aka the Parent Trap AU that you never knew you needed but will absolutely love)

I challenge you (and myself) to HAVE FUN. Enjoy your hobbies, pick up a new one if you've been interested in it! Reread that fic you love. Go on a kudos leaving spree. Text/DM/email that joke that made you laugh to someone who might like it. Be unapologetic about what you like. And last, but not least, if the opportunity presents itself, eat that donut.

Challenge # 4

In your own space, create some goals. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My goal for this year is to write (and post) something, anything, outside of an exchange/fest/whathaveyou. I haven't done that in literal years, possibly 5 or 6 of them. I think I've put that as my goal for a few snowflakes now but hopefully this time it'll happen. I even have a vague idea? Maybe? Oh well, we'll see.

Challenge #1

In your own space, introduce yourself! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

It me
Right, let's see. I am donutsweeper aka donut, penguinsweaters, or ibble depending on the platform (donutsweeper on LJ, DW, a few discord servers and AO3, penguinsweaters on tumblr and in some discords and ibble on the rest of the discords, especially Yuletide's and EAD's).

I write a lot for exchanges but mostly treats as I rarely sign up. My goal this year, as it has been for... the last 6 years I think(?) is to actually write something outside of an exchange/promptfest/whathaveyou. We'll see if it happens this year.

I do a lot of crafts so often post pictures of rugs I made or crochet projects I finished. (Although I am also very likely to forget to post about them as well because brains, what are they?)

Fandomwise, I'm not really "in" anything at the moment, although I've been reading a ton of NDZS/The Untamed fic of late and reccing a bunch of it over at [community profile] recthething which I also crosspost here when I remember so I suppose that counts. There's a ton of other fandoms I randomly flitter though though.

I need to do a Yuletide wrap up post with the seven fics I wrote for it this year and maybe I'll try a year-in-review thing too, but, ehhh, we'll see. I've also been vaguely considering an overall Yuletide retrospective that'll include stats and whatnot on everything I've done for the 11 years I participated but... effort. And time. Why don't time turners exist in the real world?
donutsweeper: (Default)

I didn't really have anything to say for day 9 or 10 but 11 is In your own space, recommend a fannish or creative resource and realized I should have posted my resource links for this challenge as opposed to day 7 (although, I'm proud of them, so I suppose they work for both)

Anyway, over 850 links on writing, researching and just a lot more thinks that could be helpful or just plain interesting broken down into 10 separate, vaguely themed, posts:

Words- finding the right one and whatnot - including lists for alternates for "said," "walk," and "very;" geographic descriptions; words to describe smells/sounds/touch/expressions/tone; body language and emotion terms; online dictionaries/thesauruses/etc; translation websites, etc. (on DW and LJ)
Titles- links for helping to come up with one including title generators, sites with searchable poetry and quote indexes, etc. (on DW and LJ)
Fighting/Military/Police - info on various weapons; writing different kind of fight scenes; military, police and forensic links and more (on DW and LJ)
Injuries/Medical stuff- a huge post with info on how to hurt and then treat your characters 'realistically', or at least somewhat. Includes basic first aid info, general/specific injuries/maladies, descriptions of various situations/injuries/etc, and lots, lots more. (on DW and LJ)
Useful writing/editing programs for the writing itself, editing, encouragement and more. (on DW and LJ)
Generators and things that offer prompts - for when you need help coming up with plots, names, spells, whathaveyou (on DW and LJ)
Folklore, Mythology, Paranormal, Map Making, World Building, Name and Language Creation Links both information on existing things as well as how to create your own for your own AU/world/universe. (on DW and LJ)
Helpful AO3 and general writing and podficcing links- Tips and tricks for posting, using and searching AO3 as well as some general writing and podficcing links- (on DW and LJ)
Cinema, Clothes, and History and Hygiene Links Plenty of Hollywood/movie/tv links (including scripts and other IMDB-type databases), historical research links (ranging from the 'ancient world' to the Victorian era to the old west to more modern and lots inbetween), food history links, lots of clothing (including armor) and hygiene links (historical through modern) and general fashion stuff- over 170 links in total. (on DW and LJ)
Randomness - 110+ links on survival/criminal skills, research, and much, much more (on DW and LJ)
donutsweeper: (Default)

Challenge #8: Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Every time someone asks for recs I'm always like 'I read a bunch! Hang on!" and then... can't come up with anything specific. Last year's accidental theme was for this was crossovers, the year before's AUs and I think this year I'll go with tiny fandoms:

Nooks and Crannies (series- The Big Valley fandom, 9 works, 65k total) My summary: A look at The Big Valley through Silas' eyes, mostly in the form of retelling of each episode. 9 works so far with occasional updates. Silas was the only non-Barkley regular and I love this take on how he feels about Heath suddenly being part of the Barkley family.

The Barricade (The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne fandom, 22k) Summary: "A little Dickens, by way of a lonely French writer, can be a dangerous thing." This is a wonderful look at where things might have gone post series but through the eyes of a crofters's daughter and her friends who learn there is "a Frenchman" living in a nearby cottage. I love the way the kids are written in this and the amazement they have in books and things from the world outside their immediate area.

Cut off at the Knees (Nero Wolfe fandom, 4k) Summary: "Archie takes a beating, requiring Wolfe to adapt to temporary life without his legs." Admittedly, this was written for me, but it's an absolutely wonderful look at Wolfe and the whole crew and what might happen if he can't rely on Archie to work a case.

Left the Prairies in My Heart (Heartland fandom, 1.5k) Summary: "Ty calls; Jack answers. How else does family work?" Another one written for me, it's a S2e1 tag and wonderfully spot on for how deeply Jack feels for both Amy and Ty and absolutely lovely.

Begged, Stolen, and Borrowed Time (Haven fandom, 2k) Summary: " If a person can come back from the dead, maybe a friendship has a chance, too." An s3e8 tag and nice look at the friendship Duke and Nathan might have had once upon a time and how they work together to make happy memories for Audrey.

And this is a crossover with a big fandom but...
Moustery and its remix of a sort, A Study in Human Observation (both 1.5-2k) wherein Doctors John Watson and David Q. Dawson (of the Sherlock Holmes books and The Great Mouse Detective) share a secret.

Well, whoops, missed several Snowflakes in a row. Not sure why I find these kind of posts and interactions so daunting but I got busy with the EAD Birthday Bash and just kept saying 'oh, I'll do snowflake in a bit' and that time never came....

Challenge #5: Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've briefly interacted with and friend/follow them.

Challenge #6: In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, or that you'd like someone to make for you. Are you dying for podfic of your writing? Do you need icons for a character that doesn't get much fanart? Is there a story you want to read? Are you looking for new canons to get into? Would you like a collaborator for a project? Maybe you want more people to talk about a certain fandom with, or you'd love to trade ficlets with somebody over email. Maybe you're new to a fandom and would like some recs to start reading, or communities to join. This is the time to ask!

Challenge #7: Promote/Rec/Sing the Praises* of Yourself!

Okay, so I'm going to look at the challenge posts for 6 and 7 and then see what people post so that'll take care of #5. For 6... I always love transformative works of my things if anyone has any desire to podfic or do art for something I've written I'd be thrilled if you do so. I can't think of much else to ask for that.

For #7: Let's see, for recent(ish) fic, I'm pretty proud of original fic I did for last year's Chocolate Box called The Unexpected Rescue (summary: Jake had been a lifeguard for years but he'd never had a summer like this before. length:9k- no canon knowledge needed for this one, obviously, and I had a lot of fun working in bits and bobs of lifeguarding life from way back when.)

Also, something else I'm pretty proud of/like to promote is that as a result of a snowflake challenge a few years back to provide links to helpful writing or fannish resources and I realized while I had hundreds of links on a lot of different platforms (LJ, DW, Tumblr, bookmarks, del.icio.us, etc) but it was impossible to navigate or find anything so I started poking about to try to organize them. After weeding out the duplicates (and triplicates) and the dead links I started making masterposts around various themes. I've kept adding to them since then and now there's more than 850 writing/resource/research links spread between the ten posts. Read more... )

Anyway, I'm sharing those mostly in hopes someone will find some of them useful so please feel free to poke around them!

Challenge #4

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Well, the last two years I said for a goal I'd like to post more and that didn't happen. I always mean to but... This year I guess I'll mix things up and say I'll try to write something that's not for an exchange, challenge or fest of some sort- something that's completely unprompted and not a gift for anyone. Considering the last time I wrote something that wasn't for something along those lines was 2014 or 2015 it's probably not any more likely an achievable goal, but whatever.

Nonfannishly I want to keep up with craft projects. Last year I unraveled a sweater that didn't fit and used the yarn to make a throw and then, when hunting for my yarn stash, found nearly an entire afghan's worth of granny squares I never put together (because I hate attaching them) but completed it anyway. This year I pulled out a braided rug I abandoned probably 15 years ago because I *hate* the way you're supposed to attach new pieces and since it being made out of cut up old jeans there were a LOT of random-sized strips that were always needing to be added. I played around with different methods and eventually found another way of adding on new strips, it's not as visually appealing and is a bit messy, but considering I'll actually *do* this method, wth, why not. I actually have already braided enough that I had to pull out old jeans too used to be donated that I'd put aside to maybe craft with and made a bunch of new strips. Not sure how big I'll make it, but I am determined to finish it (and hopefully take a picture and post about it) and once I do maybe find a new project.

Challenge #3

Pimp Your Favorite Communities, Fests or Challenges! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Hmmm, I can't think of many, I guess for fests and challenges:

I do Yuletide ([community profile] yuletide_admin) every year and love it. (Small fandom focus)

Not sure if NotPrimeTime ([community profile] npt_admin) is running this year, but I always look for things to treat there. (fandoms that aren't tiny but aren't mega-sized)

H/C Exchange ([community profile] hurtcomfortex) was new last year but is supposed to be running again this year. (h/c focused exchange)

and I follow [community profile] flashexchanges, which is pretty new but came about because there's a new flash exchange popping up every other week or so which made a need to vaguely organize and track them problematic.

There's probably others? I check chocolatebox and trickortreatex's comms for things to treat when those are in season.

Challenge #2

In your own space, talk about your fannish history. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Let's see, I came into fandom later in life then most, but as an older fan the lack of internet had a lot to do with that. In college I explored usenet a bit and had a few discussions about tv shows and books and movies, etc there but never got into the fanfic side of things and once I graduated I was internetless for quite some time.

In the late 90s there were bboards accessed through libraries' computers and then yahoo groups (RIP). Then, about 15 years ago I discovered LJ and that's when I really consider I discovered "fandom" as a thing, even if all I did was lurk for a while. I first began writing fanfic then instead of just creating stories in my head and started really interacting with other fans and really delving into fandom.

Fandom's fun. It can be batshit crazy and hopelessly infuriating at times but also so, so fun.

Challenge #1

In your own space, introduce yourself! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Okeydokie, I am donutsweeper in LJ/DW/AO3 land, penguinsweaters on tumblr and usually some form ibble+donuts on discord. I've been in fandom probably close to 15 years via these platforms? Not sure what else to say as introductions go, I write a lot of treats for exchanges, reblog a lot of cute animals gifsets, and babble about donuts depending on the platform.

Day 15

Talk about why you participated in Snowflake &/or what you got out of it. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I didn't have a chance to participate as much as I would have liked. I still have the of masterposts for a few days open to peruse so with luck I'll be checking out some people's posts later though but I did find some nice fics to read and chatted with some lovely people so it's still been a pretty successful challenge for me. :)
