Memes R Us

Stolen from my F-list

Ask me a question about one of my stories. It can be absolutely anything in any fic and I will tell you the honest-to-god answer. Don’t hold back. Ask about my plans for future parts of my current series if you want to, but keep in mind, I may not have anything firm/definite in the works. Anything. Whatever you ask, I will try my best to answer.

Are you going to write any more powdered sugar/alien donut crack?

What's up next on your writing to do list?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
probably- I have to get into a certain mindset to write it and it's not the easiest place to find mentally.

I'm trying to write something for the SGA/TW requests from the time stampt meme, it's been fighting me though *grumble*

other than that I've a few NCIS ideas I've been tossing about, but not much on the TW/DW queue

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-05-28 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
What do John Sheppard and Jack see in each other? Aside from the hotness factor. *g*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
they are both reluctant leaders. both would live just as happily as loners, attached to, but not being in charge of a team. But when leadership was thrust upon them both they couldn't not accept it.

They are kindred spirits in that way- feeling responsible for everyone and everything under their commands, shouldering the blame for anything that happens to any of their people.

I think John would welcome someone like Jack- a strong and capable soldier with experience and someone he wouldn't have to worry about losing in battle. And Jack would like John because he's the type of leader he could respect and serve (because of the whole putting his people first thing)

And they've both just seen *so* much, experienced so much, they don't need to worry about hiding their scars from each other. They can easily accept each others flaws without worrying about hiding things from one another

(obliviously I've put WAY too much thought into this pairing)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-05-28 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, that's really interesting, about leadership--I hadn't thought of that, but it's very true. And I completely agree about the rest of it.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I really need to write more with those boys....

In a way I was thinking of "Fragments" and "Atlantis Rising" (or whatever the pilot was called) Both took command by the death of their commanding officer who died in a way they felt they should have been able to prevent (Sumner shouldn't have been captured, Jack should have seen whatever affected Alex coming)

I'm weird. I absolutely can't ship John with anyone on the show. I fail at slash gogglefu on that front. But I can see John/Jack

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-05-28 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Both took command by the death of their commanding officer who died in a way they felt they should have been able to prevent

Ooh, that's very true.

John I can sort of ship with everybody and nobody. I can see John/Rodney, John/Elizabeth (well, I USED to could), John/Teyla, John/Ronon--but I suspect that he's not actually with any of them.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
See, with John being *MilitaryMan* I have difficulties picturing him with Elizabeth or Rodney- that whole US military of no fraternizing with your commanding officer and 'don't ask don't tell' crap. He wouldn't risk it. Teyla or Ronon wouldn't be under his command officially so it's actually possible to see something between him and either of them

I doubt John would be able to be in a relationship with any of them though because he's incapable of showing his vulnerability to someone under his command. In my mind Jack's more of an equal with him so John's more comfortable showing that he might need someone or feel weak or hurt or whatever

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-05-28 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
In my mind Jack's more of an equal with him so John's more comfortable showing that he might need someone or feel weak or hurt or whatever.

That makes a whole lot of sense.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I think about all the episodes where John's gotten hurt- even in "38 minutes" where he's having the life sucked out of him by the iratus bug thing and he's still making quips. There's this one moment where Rodney's whining about being screwed and for just a sec Sheppard breaks and says 'don't talk to me about being screwed' but then the shutters go back up and he's all 'macho leader man' again.

Like I said, I've put way too much thought into these boys! :)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-05-28 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I love that part in the 'jumper. Rodney keeps sneaking little worried glances at him, and he isn't proud that he saved the day until he knows John's going to be OK. Then, I'm sure he was completely insufferable. *g*

Like I said, I've put way too much thought into these boys! :)

Heh--like I haven't completely overanalyzed the Doctor and the Master. Such is fandom.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I always thought that a testament to how much Sheppard really liked Rodney is the fact the man is still allowed on away missions with him. A lesser commander would have killed him or grounded Rodney by now

and *phew* we're all a little sane crazy here, right? Although- at least yours are the SAME fandom!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-05-28 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
So. True. He's got to like him because he hasn't strangled him. I love them both, though, and their bickering. Heh--I tend to see bickering as affection, and most of the pairings I like tend to bicker.

Yes, we are sane crazy! And crossovers are GOOD.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
there's definitely affection there. I just tend to see it as brotherly/best friend like instead of slash. But we all know I'm woefully deficient in my ability to use slash goggles.

Thank god y'all like crossovers so much. Otherwise I'd be very worried. I'll never finish it, but I'm working on one with 12 (or even more) fandoms. I am clearly insane

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-05-28 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I can see it as buddies, too. Depends on which eye I squint. *g*

*stares* TWELVE? *eyes you suspiciously* *thinks about getting a net* (Wow.)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
and it's not crack. (Is the net for my sanity which has obviously run for the hills or is it to try to keep me off the ceiling and away from the liquor?)

Well, not really crack. More of a spot the character kind of thing. It's a bar filled with spies and former spies and there's vague clues to who is who.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-05-28 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh, spies. I like spies.

Hee--the net's for whichever seems more appropriate. Mostly to keep you from hurting yourself.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
a net like that might be very very useful.

I've a list of various shows that have had spies and am trying to allude to a character from each of them, not to obviously though. It's hard to decide just how specific to be

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't decided which of those two to slip in yet. But one of them will be there

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
feel free to suggest more- I don't want to miss any

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-05-28 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think I know more book spies than TV spies. Are you counting things that aren't spy shows, but that just happen to have a spy in them?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't gotten too far into it, but I'm debating that. Like Colonel Flagg from NASH and Clayton Webb from JAG etc and obviously good old Jack Harkness- i know he's not exactly a spy, but he's close enough

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-05-28 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure Jack's been a spy at SOME point.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
I figure his Time Agency days count.

I'm terrible. I've even worked in a dog, Mister Smartypants. *facepalm* need a hint to figure out who he is?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-05-28 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Dief! Well, maybe not, but I love the idea of Dief as a spy.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
nope- think cartoon show from the 80's (he tended to save the day and protect his owner, Penny and her uncle, the show's namesake)

I considered trying to figure out someone from Due South though- I thought of the old spy couple Fraser winds up tangling with, but I thought that was too far fetched

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-05-28 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Bwah! Brain! And the uncle was Inspector Gadget. (I'd never have remembered that. It amazes me that typing "cartoon 1980s Penny dog" into google got me the Inspector Gadget wiki page as the first hit.)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
google is a scary but amazing thing. I expect most of these things to be missed. Which kind of makes me wonder why I'm bothering, but I guess that goes back to the 'crazy' conversation from a bit back

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-05-28 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
THere's something to be said for doing it because you can.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
good point.

(you do realize you're feeding the insanity, right?)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-05-28 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
That seems to be what Tiggers Medleys do best. *eg*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
*snerk* I'm picturing you bouncing like tigger but on the elephant's trampoline now

I hope you're proud of your evil club status

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-05-28 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! That is still one of the best icons ever.

And of course I am! Aren't you? *innocent look*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I ♥ Karen for letting me snitch it.

That innocent look does wonders for you.

And I wouldn't have the evil clubs any other way!

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I notice that when you start to write for new fandoms, you tend to use Jack as your way in, as a crossover thing, before you writing in the verse independently. What is it about Jack that makes you comfortable or makes you want to write about him?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
oooh - good question. Jack has so many sides and personas to him it's easy to figure out a way to have him work with nearly anyone. And with his history and longevity it's possible to slip him nearly into any fandom. Honestly though, other than NCIS, I have yet to really move from writing the crossover to writing in that fandom itself, so maybe it's Jack that helps me come up with the ideas for the stories.

*babbles* I really have no idea. Maybe it's just that Jack's broken in so many ways, yet strong in so many others, he's fascinating to write for and stretching by having him face situations and people we haven't seen him face is a way of testing his boundries

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
Do you think you'll ever write a full-on follow up to 'Pashahads'? I know there are drabbles in that ficverse, but do you plan to revisit it with a plotty story again?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
One of these days I'd like to. I did do the Carson & Jack and the Teyla & Jack one and enjoyed writing in that verse again. I started a full length one ages ago (Dec maybe?) but never got anywhere. I'm just not sure I want to commit to writing, or even be able to to write, something long and detailed like that again.

I'm trying something for the time stamp meme, but haven't had any luck with it yet.

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I know you *can* write something long and plotty, as your Big Bang fic shows. I guess it's a case of wanting to, and having that drive to - sometimes it's nice just to have somewhere to play, now and then :)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been really discouraged with writing lately, with smaller stuff at least the effort expended wasn't extreme. Maybe when I get out of this funk I'll try for an SGA/TW adventure again

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Ack. We've all been there and it's hard. I normally go one of two ways - attempt a meme or throw out a prompt request that lets me write what I want without too many constrictions. Or sit down and work out what I really want to write, what I want to have achieved, and work on that for a while. But it's a pain that these things go in cycles - it'll come back, I'm sure! Hang on in there :)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks :)

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2008-05-28 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you have any particular motivation behind writing the 'old man' series (or the first story at least)?

And are we going to get more Dresden Files fic? Or even a Due South/Dresden Files crossover? Mouse/Diefenbaker?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-05-29 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
actually there is a story behind the "Old Man" series. There was a challenge on [livejournal.com profile] wintercompanion "Crossing the Line" and it got me thinking- what could Jack do that the Doctor wouldn't be able to forgive? But it had to be IC, something I could actually see Jack doing- thus mass murder or being an evil schmuck was out. But I began to think about how LONG Jack would live and how much *time* would wind up weighing on him, and what he might do to make time pass and ends meet. So I would up thinking about Jack as a drug-addicted prostitute. Originally, it was supposed to only be a one shot and I'm not sure I should have continued it.

As for Dresden? Maybe. Most likely as another DF/Jack x-over if anything, because I have an easier time writing if Jack is there, although I've considered Dresden Files for one of my [livejournal.com profile] paliphrase stories because I think there is a lot of possibility for a "pensive" story in that verse
