Well, I know you *can* write something long and plotty, as your Big Bang fic shows. I guess it's a case of wanting to, and having that drive to - sometimes it's nice just to have somewhere to play, now and then :)

I've been really discouraged with writing lately, with smaller stuff at least the effort expended wasn't extreme. Maybe when I get out of this funk I'll try for an SGA/TW adventure again

Ack. We've all been there and it's hard. I normally go one of two ways - attempt a meme or throw out a prompt request that lets me write what I want without too many constrictions. Or sit down and work out what I really want to write, what I want to have achieved, and work on that for a while. But it's a pain that these things go in cycles - it'll come back, I'm sure! Hang on in there :)
