Arguing Semantics

According to the advertisement the local supermarket had cantaloupes on sale, but I didn't see them anywhere.  So I asked a person working in the produce section where the cantaloupes would be.  He pointed to a large bin.  I went and looked, but the bin was empty.  I went back and said to him "there aren't any cantaloupes there!"  to which he responded, "Well, you asked where the cantaloupes would be.  That's where the cantaloupes would be if we had any, but we don't, we're all out."

I did not expect a lesson in semantics at 10 at night in the grocery store!

LOL! Weeellll, technically he did answer the question you asked...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yes he did. I can't fault him for that! But still.....

10 points for accuracy, -50 for needing a good smack?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
YES! Especially since I really wanted cantaloupe!

Cantaloupe does sound good. I never know how to tell if they're ripe, though.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Me either. It's luck- other than the fact I never even bother to buy them until at least June. Over the winter or in early spring they are guaranteed to be dreadful.

Is it wrong that I settled for chocolate instead?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
I knew you'd agree. Can't go wrong with chocolate! Especially when its good quality chocolate.

random question- Would the Doctor refer to the TARDIS a she or an it?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I checked three transcripts and they don't agree. I like she though, especially the way the Doctor strokes her sometimes.

When did he call her it? I remember tracking that down for somebody once before--I know he calls her she in Rise of the Cyberman/Age of Steel, just off the top of my head.

In Boom Town.

Oh great, Raxacoricofallapatorius is spelled 3 different ways in the different source material I can find. *sigh*

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-07-03 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Shame on him. And wow, I don't think anybody's gonna notice Raxacorico-etc. with a letter missing, you know? *g*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I hope not. I just wanted to try to get it correct, you know? But if wiki and the transcripts and even the DVDs aren't going to agree....

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-07-03 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
I say go with the DVDs. They're not any more likely to be right, but at least they're from the BBC, you know?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
the DVD for Boom Town differs with the spelling from WWIII. I didn't check Bad Wolf's yet. Can I sigh again?

Rexicoricophallivatorius (one of the DVD ones) looks wrong the other spellings I've found are: Raxacoricofallapatorious, Raxacoriofallapatorius and Raxacoricofallapatorius

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-07-03 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm losing my mind, because those last three all look the same. o.O

ETA: wait, no, I see it now. Some beta I am!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
they are all very close
Raxacoricofallapatorious (has the extra c and o)
Raxacoriofallapatorius (no extras)
Raxacoricofallapatorius (has the extra c)

you ARE a good beta!!! They're all damn similar!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-07-03 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
For some reason, I think it needs the extra c. Raxacorico. But I think you can do what you like at the end. *g*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] rustydog and you agree. Me too- it definitely sounds like there's a c there.

We have a winner! Thanks!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Now if only the fic would WORK! Stupid evil plot bunny. I should've let it starve!

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Just going on instinct, the -ous looks wrong for a place name, the second one is missing the clearly pronounced second "c" in "corico" and the third one looks like the best! The one from the DVD looks like how my grandmother would spell it. *g*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! Absolutely agree about the C!
