inlawland- the wildlife

There are so many deer, despite being in a fairly urban setting.  In the week we were there we saw 5 and got pictures of three:

in backyard

In front yard

In side yard

We also walked down to the beach and saw lots of animals there.

Lots of crabs:

A bird I *think* is a heron of some sort

A jellyfish

basically it was just very pretty there.

but a bit rocky.

Gorgeous. Looks like it was a Great Blue Heron.

[identity profile] adafrog.livejournal.com 2008-08-05 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely. A lot. After my ornithology class (I'm from Oregon.) I pretty much realized they were everywhere. But they're so beautiful it's a good thing.

Ooh, pretty! I love the shot of the deer in the front yard. The colors are gorgeous, besides the coolness of having deer in the yard.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
My son actually took that shot- he ran inside and grabbed the camera yelling "there's another one!" The deer are everwhere, we nearly ran over a mom and baby deer that darted out onto windy road right in front of us.

Ooh, yipes. One of the places I used to live had a lot of little white-tailed deer around, and they'd dash across the road RIGHT in front of the car. There was an empty lot behind our house and the deer would come and graze there in the morning and evening.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea why there are so many deer around there- there's houses everywhere, but there are a lot of trees and whatnot so I guess there are places for them to live. The roads are really twisty though very hilly and sometimes pretty narrow. not good for the dumb deer

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2008-08-03 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Not good at all! And they will go right through your windshield if you hit them. Which does not lead to good things for either party involved.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
ooh, I can imagine. Outstate MN (i.e. non-twin city area) has a LOT of deer so you hear about accidents with them all the time

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
My grandma (in southern Wisconsin) hit three deer in one year a couple of years ago. I can't believe she didn't get hurt more than she did. Those suckers are brutal with their hooves or antlers if they roll up your hood.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
Three?!?!?! The insurance people must not have liked her. Wow, good thing she wasn't badly hurt!

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
She really shouldn't be driving at all anymore. We're just mad at the unscrupulous car salesman who sold her a car in the first place!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
oh no! Yeah, there really needs to be better testing for people as they get older. When I think of my grandmother driving *shudder*

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I love the deer in the side yard shot! And the heron. So pretty!
(And hee, you have "octopus" for the jellyfish. At first I thought it was a rotting octopus. *g*)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
oops- you are right. MY brain's still on spincycle

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, that's definitely a Great Blue Heron.

Those crabs look tasty...I mean...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 03:55 pm (UTC)(link)
When scuttling about they are cute and not to be thought of that way. When anonymously offered on a menu? fair game.

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I've lived in Seattle too long. I see sea life and I automatically think of seafood.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see that. The big crab was awfully cute though, most fish and seafood though? Ugly

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I won't eat flounder EVER.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
you only eat it if it's cute?

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I only eat it if it's not ABSOLUTELY HORRIFYING prior to being cooked.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
so no geoducks for you? (We found plenty of those too, when walking, but you can't take pictures of them)

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
*shudder* No thanks. I'm even reluctant to eat King Crab, because those things just scare me.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
they are scary- but I cant get over the fact someone looked at a geoduck and said "yum, that'll make good eatin'!"

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I can only imagine desperation played into that one.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
or a dare. At least one would hope

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd hate to be on the losing end of that one.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-03 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
oh yeah, the winner was rather happy with himself I'm sure

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-08-04 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
I was about to say "I'll bet", but then I figured that might not be the best thing to say in light of the conversation.

Great pics! Thanks for sharing!
