This is my babble, let me show it to you....

I've been giving a lot of thought to the comment numbers people have been posting and how I'm the top commentator on so many LJs.

Some made sense- I'm certainly guilty of the occasional (or not so occasional) commentfest with some people- like [profile] _medley_ and [personal profile] mad_jaks and [personal profile] unfeathered but others honestly did surprise me, especially on some journals where I was pretty sure I hadn't done much other than squee and comment on stories and answer memes and offer hugs when needed.

If someone on my f-list writes something, and I know the fandom, I read it.  And usually comment on it.  If they're doing a meme and I can participate intelligently, I do.  I thought everyone did that.  But, then I looked at my own list of commentators and the list of those who have friended me and who I've friended back (which I'm terrible at remembering to do, I'll admit that) and how many times various people had commented and realized that, no, few people do. Which sort of surprised me.

Commenting in journals is not a two way street.  Just because I comment in your LJ doesn't mean I expect you to comment in mine.  I'm a little shocked and embarrassed about the numbers that have come about by people doing this meme, but I've decided not to let it affect me.  If I like your writing I don't plan on stopping telling you so.  If you're down I'm not about to quit trying to cheer you up and if you're in need of donuts I will continue to offer them.  I hope that's okay with everyone.  If not, just let me know, I promise not to be offended.

*hugs you*

The fact that you comment so much is not a bad thing at all - it's a wonderful thing, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise! I would love to be able to comment as much as you do.

*hugs back tight* the numbers honestly freaked me out a little, but screw it, people like squee and I'm going to continue to do it

I've also come to realize that sometimes it really does translate to shyness/social anxiety, just as it works in the rest of our lives. If you go in a person's journal and comment they're more than happy to have a conversation with you, but it can be hard for them to make an "unsolicited" comment in someone else's journal.

I don't have that problem so much online as I do face to face, and the way I see it if I've written a post you can read then I'm soliciting comments, but I try and respect that it's more difficult for some people. I have been in danger of taking it personally at times, but I take everything personally. :)

Also, just so there are no misunderstandings: I don't write fic or make icons or post any great amount of content. I realize this is going to result in a different relationship with the other fannish people I like. That's OK.

very good point. in RL I'm fairly shy, but here I blither on and on. There's something about fandom in particular that I just can't shut up about. Somehow, I hadn't realized you didn't write. Maybe that's why I haven't wound up on your LJ that often

[identity profile] itsarift-thing.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Look I told you about this last night! We LOVE and ADORE your generosity of spirit.
There's loads of stuff I would NEVER have written if I hadn't partaken in a commentfest with you. Ideas that have sparked and grown in the dim reccesses of my brain simply because I've spotted you and Medley have commentfested overnight while I was asleep.
And, come to that days - especially recently - I would simply not have got through without you being there when I've got home at lunchtime to offer me support.

Short version Next time I do a comment check I expect to find you still right there leading the pack. Or Else!

*hugsies* I know, I know. And I promise not to stop any time soon, this is just a post I had to make to work out things in my head and make sure no one felt differently.

but, be honest, you're always a little afraid the evil club's going to gang up on you....

Hey I'm spamming - who cares? How far back does it count? I mean, has [livejournal.com profile] fandom_me done it? Because we totally blitzed her journal that time, didn't we? Her comment count for that journal would be phenomenal.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
no, as far as I've seen Becky hasn't done it for any of her journals.. With the 5k fest done there her counts probably incredible. Although Terry started a 5k and that should have mucked with the count, but I was still on top there

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
thank you!

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
... Did I get that right? Did you just tell people you wouldn't be offended if they wanted you to stop commenting?

Uhm. I think. I think everyone loves the comments. At least I do. A-and I usually try and comment on every entry I can in any way relate to on my flist, but lately haven't and. I'm sorry!

You're right, though. It isn't really a two way street. Sometimes, that makes me sad.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
well, yeah- I mean, not everyone necessarily wants babbling in their LJ, right? (Or I assume as much) I'd rather someone just give me a nudge and say 'you're nice, but sometimes a little too much' than get weird 'shut the hell up' vibes or something.

and you've school and vacations and things which makes it hard to comment. RL can be a killer to LJ!

I did too when i started- i'm still mostly that way. Chatterbox to the end i guess!

i for one love and cherish any feedback on fic- as long as its positive or constructive negative (but thats not an issue with you) and i very much appreciate it. *hug*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
constructive criticism/feedback is the best!

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2008-08-13 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The thing about you, is that you always comment, which I love. You always have something to say about my stories and participate in all my memes and offer a cheering word to my rants. So don't feel bad, because that's awesome. I don't comment nearly as much as I would like. *huggles*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 01:58 am (UTC)(link)

Yes! :) Gotta love donuts!

Our insanely long LJ comment conversations are usually the highlight of my wee...and of the people who are around when I'm typing, laughing my arse off, and explaining exactly what's so amusing. Especially, you know, when one of those great one-liners comes up.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I bet it takes quite a bit of explaining sometimes....

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
You are all kinds of awesome. Seriously. I don't know how you do it, getting round everyone and being awesome at all of us. You shouldn't be embarrassed. You should smile a smug little smile and think "how awesome am I?"

Considering I'm pretty outgoing in real life, I'm terrifyingly shy online, and generally assume people won't want to hear what I've got to say. It's something I'm working on - I shall take you as my inspiration.

And don't you dare stop commenting! *clings*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
*hugs back tight* I can't think of a single person who wouldn't want to hear what you have to say, it'd be great if you posted more too!

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's fan-bloody-tastic that you are so *there* in an online sense. How the hell could that be construed as a bad thing? I look forward to every comment I get from you whether it be sharing squee or giving me donuts and hugs. And as for commenting on fic; well, it's nice to have regulars *g*

So I'm very glad to hear that you have no intention of stopping.

Here, have some chocolate. You can sprinkle it on your donuts.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
oooh chocolate is always appreciated! :)

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2008-08-14 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally think it's absolutely awesome. I always count on you to be the first (or one of the first, at least) responders, especially if I'm cranky and in need of donuts. (Although possibly that could lead to a different sort of social anxiety, thinking that people are *expecting* you to comment...so don't feel obligated!)

I know that in my journal, you're always friendly and fun and cheerleading and comforting and feedbacking and handing out donuts. The fact that you're top on so many people's lists just means that you're over there in their journals doing the same thing, and that is BRILLIANT. I said in my journal that I think you deserve some kind of Appreciation Award from fandom.

Also, it makes me very happy when there's commentfests in my journal, whether I'm participating in them or not. I read the stuff you and [livejournal.com profile] _medley_ come up with, and just sit around giggling.

So, don't change a thing! We love you...just the way you are! /Bridget Jones' friends

*hugs you and your OTP*

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-08-15 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Oh sweetie. I'm sure you'll have heard this long before I got around to seeing this entry (I haven't read other comments yet) but I'm so sorry you're embarrassed by this - I *love* the fact that you are always ready to offer donuts and encouragement and say hello and just banter a bit, and everything else you do. Sometimes I just need distraction from whatever blah stuff is going on, and I know if I poke my head around LJ just a bit I can find a conversation you're involved in - I may or may not be in time to get involved, but just reading it always cheers me up. I'm *sure* I'm not the only one. LJ is a better place for me with you in it! So comment away and please don't feel bad about it. ::hugs::

If someone on my f-list writes something, and I know the fandom, I read it. And usually comment on it. If they're doing a meme and I can participate intelligently, I do. I thought everyone did that.

I do this as much as I can, but sometimes I am limited by time availability. It seems I'm always a little bit behind, and I feel a little bad about that. I'd like to be able to comment *more*. :) But I know that people who don't, probably have the same problem I do, and people who do, are probably more efficient than me, and I appreciate them!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-08-15 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
*squishes tight* thanks!
