Christmas Special

Just saw the Doctor Who Christmas special.

Nonspoilerly reaction is- I think I enjoyed it more than I've like DW in a long, long time.  Although.... *facepalms* at effects.  The creature-things (face of badguy, body of I'm not sure what)  were what I would have expected back in the days of the first or second Doctor.

In the musical "Annie" the not nice woman running the orphanage is Miss Hannigan, I assume the similariaty in name was planned?

[identity profile] taffimai.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Better question: Can someone buy RTD a baby names book? Jack, Jackie, Jackson ... ugh!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
oh yeah, there is that. *sighs* I get the 'reason' for Rose/Rosita, but still....

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I liked "Jackson". As I said in my reaction post: He has the memory loss! He admires the Doctor to a ridiculous degree! He looked at a screwdriver and thought, "This doesn't really need to be any more sonic."

And the way that Rosita and Jackson wound up being the Doctor's companions...well, it worked for me.

I thought about Miss Hannigan, too. :D

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I liked it. Rose and Jack helping the Doctor against one of his oldest foes (okay, a different 'old foe' but still an old one and a metal one!)

And yeah- I grinned about the screwdriver too

[identity profile] taffimai.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
He has a wife and son he doesn't know about! Oh, wait. Hmmm....

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
oh yes... hmmm is right. The Doctor has a daughter (living) he doesnt know about and had a wife/love/special someone...

[identity profile] taffimai.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Jack seems like the type to have an ex-spouse who would wipe his memory to resolve a custody dispute, don't you think?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
oh dear, don't give RTD any ideas!

[identity profile] taffimai.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
*blinks* RTD is on your flist?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
*hee* no, but it's my firm belief that once an idea is out there you're asking for TROUBLE because it's just floating there, waiting for someone to act on it

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
raising the red cloth infront of the bull and shaking it eh?

Dare people to write it. *nods*

[identity profile] taffimai.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well I like crack.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
crack? Who'd ever want to write that? Or read that?

*snickers*

[identity profile] taffimai.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
*giggles* Your icon has Jack!boobies!

Speaking of, crack fic rec: One morning you wake up and realise what that last woman had meant when she said she was on birth control. (http://sepia-words.livejournal.com/6077.html)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
that's from a genderswitch (among other) crack in a story I wrote that rustydog drew for me.

Jack and the Ultimate No Good Cracktastically Clichéd Very Bad Day
(http://donutsweeper.livejournal.com/68792.html)

oh dear- that sepia story is crack but heartbreaking at the same time

[identity profile] taffimai.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
You are so odd. I &hearts you.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
why thank you

[identity profile] stackcats.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
re Jackson - never thought of that before! genius.

[identity profile] phoenix64.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
He looked at a screwdriver and thought, "This doesn't really need to be any more sonic."

*chokes with laughter*

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
That cracked me up--him looking at the screwdriver and saying, "Well, it...makes a noise." *tap, tap* "That's sonic."

[identity profile] taffimai.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
At least she wasn't blonde?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
*snickers* true, true...

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone should at least give him the wherewithal to get back to his dimensionally transcendent pub so he can go and talk to bloody John Tyler again and get it all out of his system (Jack is the 'pet' form of John after all and RTD has been using variations of both in loads of things for years).

The above statement will make no sense until you read a Story to be Told (http://aeron-lanart.livejournal.com/83122.html) and A Curious Kind of Symmetry (http://aeron-lanart.livejournal.com/83921.html); yes, they're crackfic, but I think they explain an awful lot about RTD!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't Ianto a Welsh form of John too?

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes indeedy. I rest my case! *g*

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
A Very good case, with lots of buckles and a big padlock. Bit heavy though, but that's why I have a team of extraordinarily strong, tiny and invisible aliens to help me carry the damn thing.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
do you have to tip the wee aliens? Do they accept money or chocolate or...

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Or. Very definitely Or. I think they might be long lost cousins of the Nac Mac Feegle, though I can't be sure seeing as they're invisible. They like to sneak into people's drinks and drain they dry, obviously with the owner of said drink being none the wiser. So far I've been lucky enough to keep them away from my stash of chocolate.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
so they are the ones responsible for that glass getting emptied when you were sure you'd just poured it!

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, that's them. Sneaky invisible alcohol-guzzling case-carrying aliens.

Do you know if anyone's ever written the Nac Mac Feegle into Torchwood? I'm thinking Torchwood 2 would have to have more than a passing acquaintance...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
hmmm, it's vaguely familiar, but I'm not sure if I'm just going crazy or not

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I thought. Time to trawl the flist I suppose.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I thought

that I'm crazy but it does really exist?

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Both? *g*
It does sound kind of familiar, but it ain't one of Jades. Hmm.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
it really does. I'm sure it's out there. You could ask at [livejournal.com profile] twgenrefinders or [livejournal.com profile] twstoryfinder I suppose.

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Not a bad idea. I might just do that!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
either our sanity will be confirmed, or our insanity...

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Probably both.

And if it doesn't exist I might just have to write it!

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Ehm we were right... and you helped beta the thing! Oh Someone should take pity on our our poor swiss-cheesed memories! I *knew* it had something to do with Jades!

http://travels-in-time.livejournal.com/104569.html

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
*dies* oh yeah!

(I did mention that insanity thing, didn't I?)

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I've memmed it now so I hopefully won't forget again! But I'll plead insanity too...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
my brain. it is broke... and the insanity defense is a good one

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno how. I was just listing all the people named some variation of "Jack" or "John" in Torchwood, and I thought "Ianto" was, but I wasn't sure, so I looked it up and found that "Owen" is also a variation of "John".

Oh, Eugene too! The guy in "Random Shoes".

I think my conclusion was that the only male character of any import to the show (that was during S1) that *wasn't* named John, was Rhys. And that's...now that I come to think about it, probably a Welsh variation and shortening of "Russell". :D

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
someone needs to point RTD to a baby name book.

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

Some posts on the subject:

http://terrylj.livejournal.com/204980.html
and
http://terrylj.livejournal.com/217037.html

Old stuff, though. Probably all irrelevant now.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
oooh, you haz mad smarts!

Ianto being a diminutive of John makes "Yan" seem even stupider when it's used in fanfic. And I'm not even going to TOUCH Yanny or Yannyboy with a 10 foot pole.

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I hate "Yan" with the burning hate of a thousand fiery suns. Argh.

"Yannyboy"? Somebody used THAT? *shakes head* People are SCARY.

(No mad smarts, just too much over-thinky.)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yan is bad. It just rubs me in a bad way.

One, truly terrible author, uses all sorts of bizarre nicknames. Yannyboy is the only one I really remember. I learned very quickly to quit clicking the links that have anyhting to do with that specific username

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I, too, just got around to watching that. My first reaction to the creature things was "Cybermonkies!", which just led to a lot of laughter. Mostly, they reminded me of the Morlocks in H.G. Wells' story "The Time Machine".

I really liked this one, especially Jackson.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
seriously, what the hell were they? cybermonkeys is the best description I've seen. You're right though, they do sort of resemble morlocks

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Mops with cyber masks? Yeah, I don't know. They were just kind of freaky.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
freaky, but not in a scary way.

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely. Mostly just WTF.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
and laughter. and just a- someone got paid to make that costume?

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
YES. I mean, seriously, did they sew together a bunch of mops?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I almost want to find a screencap of those creatures (did they *ever* get a name?) just to make fun of them in an icon but even I'm not sure I could come up with something witty to say about then

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think they did get a name. I like that idea, though. I'm sure you could come up with something eventually. Or, you know, just let this conversation continue and I'm sure we'll say something icon worthy.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
there is that too. Because, holy crap they were bad looking. They were supposed to be scary, right? but totally weren't

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
My first reaction was, "Oh, look it's a cyberdog...oh, wait, no...cybermonkey? Uh, did they just put a cyber mask on a mop? WTF?"

And then I was too busy cheering on Rosita with the axe to think much more about it until they appeared later.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
Cyberlumpy thing *nods* Rosita+axe= FTW!

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently the Addams Family got converted.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
omg yes- some sort of canine/cyberman version of cousin Itt!

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! It's sort of like the body of Cousin Itt, the brain of Uncle Fester, and the speed/climbing ability of Thing.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
*sporfles* not a good villian then, eh?

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Not really, no. But, hey, stick a light bulb in its mouth and it'll light up!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I'd rather train it to do my dusting

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
think about how convenient it would be. And it can climb walls to get those pesky cobwebs on the ceiling too!

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's like the Cyber version of a Roomba.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
*nods* other than it's vague need to want to kill you, it's the perfect cleaning tool

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
*snort* I would love to see that in a commercial.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-10 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Tired of cobwebs?

Dust in hard to reach places?

Get yourself a CyberMopcreature!

Other than their occasional attempt at converting you, they make the perfect cleaning assistant!

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
We cannot be held responsible for any conversions, attempted conversions, or partial conversions.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 04:43 pm (UTC)(link)
that needs to be lolcat'ed at ihazatardis. with your little fine print along the bottom

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm TOTALLY game. I just need to find a good picture...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
can't help you there I have no idea where to find screencaps of DW

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad you used that icon.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
although this one would fit as well

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I gave into that fact a long time ago.

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-11 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
And we're all the better for that.

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-12 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
As for the rest of the world, well, that's their problem.

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-12 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
I figured you'd approve.
