Christmas Special

Just saw the Doctor Who Christmas special.

Nonspoilerly reaction is- I think I enjoyed it more than I've like DW in a long, long time.  Although.... *facepalms* at effects.  The creature-things (face of badguy, body of I'm not sure what)  were what I would have expected back in the days of the first or second Doctor.

In the musical "Annie" the not nice woman running the orphanage is Miss Hannigan, I assume the similariaty in name was planned?

Someone should at least give him the wherewithal to get back to his dimensionally transcendent pub so he can go and talk to bloody John Tyler again and get it all out of his system (Jack is the 'pet' form of John after all and RTD has been using variations of both in loads of things for years).

The above statement will make no sense until you read a Story to be Told (http://aeron-lanart.livejournal.com/83122.html) and A Curious Kind of Symmetry (http://aeron-lanart.livejournal.com/83921.html); yes, they're crackfic, but I think they explain an awful lot about RTD!

Isn't Ianto a Welsh form of John too?

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes indeedy. I rest my case! *g*

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
A Very good case, with lots of buckles and a big padlock. Bit heavy though, but that's why I have a team of extraordinarily strong, tiny and invisible aliens to help me carry the damn thing.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
do you have to tip the wee aliens? Do they accept money or chocolate or...

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Or. Very definitely Or. I think they might be long lost cousins of the Nac Mac Feegle, though I can't be sure seeing as they're invisible. They like to sneak into people's drinks and drain they dry, obviously with the owner of said drink being none the wiser. So far I've been lucky enough to keep them away from my stash of chocolate.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
so they are the ones responsible for that glass getting emptied when you were sure you'd just poured it!

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, that's them. Sneaky invisible alcohol-guzzling case-carrying aliens.

Do you know if anyone's ever written the Nac Mac Feegle into Torchwood? I'm thinking Torchwood 2 would have to have more than a passing acquaintance...

hmmm, it's vaguely familiar, but I'm not sure if I'm just going crazy or not

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I thought. Time to trawl the flist I suppose.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I thought

that I'm crazy but it does really exist?

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Both? *g*
It does sound kind of familiar, but it ain't one of Jades. Hmm.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
it really does. I'm sure it's out there. You could ask at [livejournal.com profile] twgenrefinders or [livejournal.com profile] twstoryfinder I suppose.

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Not a bad idea. I might just do that!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
either our sanity will be confirmed, or our insanity...

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Probably both.

And if it doesn't exist I might just have to write it!

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno how. I was just listing all the people named some variation of "Jack" or "John" in Torchwood, and I thought "Ianto" was, but I wasn't sure, so I looked it up and found that "Owen" is also a variation of "John".

Oh, Eugene too! The guy in "Random Shoes".

I think my conclusion was that the only male character of any import to the show (that was during S1) that *wasn't* named John, was Rhys. And that's...now that I come to think about it, probably a Welsh variation and shortening of "Russell". :D

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
someone needs to point RTD to a baby name book.

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

Some posts on the subject:

and

Old stuff, though. Probably all irrelevant now.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
oooh, you haz mad smarts!

Ianto being a diminutive of John makes "Yan" seem even stupider when it's used in fanfic. And I'm not even going to TOUCH Yanny or Yannyboy with a 10 foot pole.

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I hate "Yan" with the burning hate of a thousand fiery suns. Argh.

"Yannyboy"? Somebody used THAT? *shakes head* People are SCARY.

(No mad smarts, just too much over-thinky.)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yan is bad. It just rubs me in a bad way.

One, truly terrible author, uses all sorts of bizarre nicknames. Yannyboy is the only one I really remember. I learned very quickly to quit clicking the links that have anyhting to do with that specific username
