Christmas Special

Just saw the Doctor Who Christmas special.

Nonspoilerly reaction is- I think I enjoyed it more than I've like DW in a long, long time.  Although.... *facepalms* at effects.  The creature-things (face of badguy, body of I'm not sure what)  were what I would have expected back in the days of the first or second Doctor.

In the musical "Annie" the not nice woman running the orphanage is Miss Hannigan, I assume the similariaty in name was planned?

Better question: Can someone buy RTD a baby names book? Jack, Jackie, Jackson ... ugh!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
oh yeah, there is that. *sighs* I get the 'reason' for Rose/Rosita, but still....

I liked "Jackson". As I said in my reaction post: He has the memory loss! He admires the Doctor to a ridiculous degree! He looked at a screwdriver and thought, "This doesn't really need to be any more sonic."

And the way that Rosita and Jackson wound up being the Doctor's companions...well, it worked for me.

I thought about Miss Hannigan, too. :D

I liked it. Rose and Jack helping the Doctor against one of his oldest foes (okay, a different 'old foe' but still an old one and a metal one!)

And yeah- I grinned about the screwdriver too

He has a wife and son he doesn't know about! Oh, wait. Hmmm....

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
oh yes... hmmm is right. The Doctor has a daughter (living) he doesnt know about and had a wife/love/special someone...

Jack seems like the type to have an ex-spouse who would wipe his memory to resolve a custody dispute, don't you think?

He looked at a screwdriver and thought, "This doesn't really need to be any more sonic."

*chokes with laughter*

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
That cracked me up--him looking at the screwdriver and saying, "Well, it...makes a noise." *tap, tap* "That's sonic."

At least she wasn't blonde?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
*snickers* true, true...

Someone should at least give him the wherewithal to get back to his dimensionally transcendent pub so he can go and talk to bloody John Tyler again and get it all out of his system (Jack is the 'pet' form of John after all and RTD has been using variations of both in loads of things for years).

The above statement will make no sense until you read a Story to be Told (http://aeron-lanart.livejournal.com/83122.html) and A Curious Kind of Symmetry (http://aeron-lanart.livejournal.com/83921.html); yes, they're crackfic, but I think they explain an awful lot about RTD!

Isn't Ianto a Welsh form of John too?

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes indeedy. I rest my case! *g*

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
A Very good case, with lots of buckles and a big padlock. Bit heavy though, but that's why I have a team of extraordinarily strong, tiny and invisible aliens to help me carry the damn thing.

[identity profile] travels-in-time.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno how. I was just listing all the people named some variation of "Jack" or "John" in Torchwood, and I thought "Ianto" was, but I wasn't sure, so I looked it up and found that "Owen" is also a variation of "John".

Oh, Eugene too! The guy in "Random Shoes".

I think my conclusion was that the only male character of any import to the show (that was during S1) that *wasn't* named John, was Rhys. And that's...now that I come to think about it, probably a Welsh variation and shortening of "Russell". :D

I, too, just got around to watching that. My first reaction to the creature things was "Cybermonkies!", which just led to a lot of laughter. Mostly, they reminded me of the Morlocks in H.G. Wells' story "The Time Machine".

I really liked this one, especially Jackson.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
seriously, what the hell were they? cybermonkeys is the best description I've seen. You're right though, they do sort of resemble morlocks

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Mops with cyber masks? Yeah, I don't know. They were just kind of freaky.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-01-04 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
freaky, but not in a scary way.
