The Baby Shower

Title: The Baby Shower
Pairing/Rating/Warning: none, rated G
Word Count: 100
Summary: Jack and Ianto discuss the idea of throwing a baby shower
Author's Note: Written for [profile] fandom_me  who wanted a story where Jack was celebrating something, I hope planning the celebration instead is okay...

“A baby shower, Ianto, that’s what we need to do!  We need to throw her a baby shower!”

“A baby shower, Sir?”

“Sure!  Why not?  She’d love it.  Everyone loves a baby shower!”

“But... a baby shower?”

“Come on, it’ll be fun.  It’ll give us a chance to spruce up the place...”

“Spruce up, Sir?”

“We’ll scrub this place till it shines!  Maybe hang some decorations...”

“Decorations, Sir?”

“Of course decorations!  Baby showers need decorations!  It’s tradition!!”

“I wasn’t aware that there were traditions regarding pterodactyls, Sir”

“Very funny.  You can be such a spoilsport, Ianto.”

“Just being practical, Sir.”

Although this is a sweetie fic, I have to say that in UK English a 'baby shower' would be some form of tot-wash (and a bridal shower is what inevitably happens when the photographer gets the camera out).

Hope this isn't what your anonymous git was ranting about. I just find the phrase amusing.

Actually that wasn't what they had complained about. Do expecting moms have parties thrown for them in the U.K.? If so, what is it called?

I never got a party thrown for me...any of the three times. People tend to come round with gifts after the baby is born. I think it's a superstition thing, like I never put the drapes on the crib until the day I brought the babe home from the hospital.

ahhh, that makes sense too. But you were able to figure out what I meant by 'baby shower' right? Or did the whole thing just seem like gobblegook?

I've seen it on US tv - it's turned up in Friends and such stuff. I know what it means, I just find the phrase amusing.

Oh, good. You're right, the phrasing does sound a bit funny when you think about it.

I'm a Brit from Liverpool and I've been to loads of baby showers (that were called baby showers too) so I think it just depends on the people involved what that sort of party is called. As Jack's American he would think like that, even if the rest of the team had to look up what the heck a baby shower was on wiki or google... though I din't think Myfanwy would really care one way or the other.

I wonder if it's coming into usage more, picked up from shows like Friends. I have never come across a baby shower in Bradford, although I know what it means - also there still seems to be a lingering superstition about giving gifts before the baby is born.

Excellent. I'm glad to hear others use the term as well. And good point and Jack and Myfanwy!
