Go to where you suspect there are some shards. Arm yourself with one (or more) slices of bread - if no one in your house eats the crust use those. Dab/wipe at the floor with them, they'll pick up all the tiny slivers really well.
OUCH! For big glass shards there's always slippers?
We still have decent laps then. And if we were just about to get up to refil our empty coffee cups when they decide to take advantage of our laps, that much the better!
