Stupid brain

Yes, it is very important to spend two hours researching the difference between a geological survey and a geographic survey so I can use the right term when Jack dismisses the data presented to him via the report in a brief sentence.

And no, I'm not wasting time on the minutia because it puts off figuring out the specifics behind the evil alien, or how Jack is going to solve things and what's going to happen next- that's just a bonus.

Anyone have a brain that is functioning?  Mine appears to be stuck on spin cycle.

I feel like I've been trapped at the desk of doom for about a fortnight, which wasn't helped when we had 4 people off today :S

I'm sure Jack will figure it out, now that he knows the difference ;) You'll get there! As long as you combine some writing with the research, it'll come. You've got so much done already :D

*waves pom poms* although I'm staying sitting down because if I try to bounce, I'm going to fall over...

My bigbang and I have been in a love and hate relationship for awhile now. Jack will pull me through, he's finagled his way to NY, gotten past the pushy four year old and her "tea and crumbits" and managed to tell us whats happened in the story (well, so far) in both the present and in flashbacks to the first time he confronted the alien.

Now if only he'd tell me what the alien is...

*pulls plug*
Er or maybe not

*feeds donuts and chocolate*

If all else fails he could just wake up in the SUV - as if by magic - with the answer LOL

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I will always happily accept donuts and chocolate!

I am determined to finish my bigbang. 6,000 words and about a third of the story to go, give or take.

[identity profile] mad-jaks.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
OH OH and if you don't know what the alien is perhaps we could play that game

Fold a piece of paper in 3
person one draw a head and shoulders
person two draw the body, and arms
person three draw the hands and legs

then voila a monster

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
lol! that's a cute idea! I might do that with my kids to figure out what it looks like.

My main problem is I didn't plan out my bigbang- I can't write that way. I had a basic premise - this lake near where I grew up was considered to be haunted and people always died in it- what if it wasn't haunted, but there was am alien responsible for the deaths instead? So... I've gotten to the point in the story where I have to start to explain the alien and whatnot... and need to start figuring things out in a hurry

I'd lend you my brain, but it took a vacation two years ago and still isn't back. Sends me postcards every once in a while. I think it's somewhere in the Carribean...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
at least the postcards are pretty. would be worse if it sent back postcards of famous garbage dumps or something... :)

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It keeps telling me it's watching hot boys snog at the beach, but I think it's just making that up to annoy me. Evil brain.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
ahh, so it's taunting you. evil, evil thing!

Okay, now I have a desire to visit famous garbage dumps. That's how non-(normally) functioning *my* brain is. (But think of all the interesting things you could learn in a garbage dump!)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw an article about how the tv show "Dirty Jobs" is encouraging people to visit the garbage dumps and whatnot that are shown on the show, some are becoming tourist attractions!

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not even sure where my brain is any more.

Anyway, I assume there's quite a significant difference between geological and geographical, so it sounds like valid research to me!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
honestly, I'm not 100% sure, but it did introduce me to the idea of scientists drilling bore holes to discover what sediment was left which lead to a way for Jack to figure out something regarding the alien so it wound up being useful!

My brain is at starbucks. It wasn't content with the triple mocha+extra shot I got earlier today and wanted more caffeine.

[identity profile] smithy161.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think geographical is more to do with the lie of the land horizontally, while geological is concerned with the vertical (i.e. under the ground) landscape? I'm not sure either.

Mmm, triple mocha. MMM, extra shot.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I *think* so. I'll ask hubby if I did it right when I get home, he was a geology major in college.

I am a massive fan of the mocha. Whoever invented the idea of combining chocolate and coffee deserves a medal

I can offer chocolate (and some geological know-how if you're interested as have done Open University course in geology).

For naming planets I turn to my job and use drug names. My fave alien planet/drug name is Metenix 5...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I always happily accept all offers of chocolate!

I finally did manage to figure it out. A geological survey done on the Wisconsin Episode glaciation, where trace amounts of Germanium were discovered in boreholes- which enable Jack (with other clues) to figure out the mystery.

I never thought about how I come up with alien names, I tend to just smush together consonant sounds till it feels right

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'd love to help, but I'm having a day, and my brain is currently on strike.

I will offer some Barrowman, however.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
you can never go wrong inserting Barrowman into things

oh wait.. that sounded, I mean I didn't mean for it to come out like...

never mind *hides*

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I have the urge to metaquote AND icon that.

I just fell out of my chair, by the way. Thankfully, the bed caught me.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
*I feel dirty*

I honestly didn't mean for it to be interpreted in any way other than having Barrowman mentioned was always a good thing

I decided to change my computer wallpaper. I feel a donut is needed somewhere on there.
