My Life is a Dilbert Cartoon

I spent the last hour and a half or so taking tickets for an event that had no tickets issued for it.

Yep, I sat there because I was assigned to take tickets even though there WERE NO TICKETS.

How does something like that happen you ask?  Well, the work assignments for the annual meeting are drawn up every ten years and assigned by job title.  So, as Assistant Membership Director, I collect tickets.  As it happens the decision was made to quit printing tickets seven years ago, but that minor detail hasn't affected the duty roster yet.  Why?  Because they only rewrite and reassign jobs for the annual meeting every ten years because (as my boss said when I asked her about it) "that's the way it's always been done."

*blinks*

Gotta love corporate logic.

Well, at least you'll be somewhat ready.

and compound interest is a lovely friend to have on your side as well

not when it's interest building on loans though, but thankfully student loans aren't bad like that. It's credit cards that you have to look out for

Interest building on savings is definitely far better than interest building on loans.

*nods* although a surprising number of people never clue into that

To have common sense and be responsible? Yes, definitely.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
common sense is quite rare these days. As is responsibility, especially fiscal responsibility- one of the things I do in my job is assign scholarships for reduced membership fees and camp costs. The amount some people make but then they can't manage their $$ is sickening.

It really is. My parents are always amazed by how well I manage my money, but it's really not that hard. Pay rent, buy food, buy other necessities, save a little, and then, if you've got some left over, have a bit of fun.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
ah, but no one gets that. Or they qualify what is a 'necessity' strangely. They need their $100 a month cell phone plan and fancy car and three starbucks drinks a day

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I'm actually glad I got rid of my car when I did. I'd never survive if I had to pay for gas.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
well, living where you do, it makes a lot of sense because you can walk or get mass transit to everywhere you need to go. I wish I could do that to more places around here

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think that's a major part of why I love Seattle and the city in general. I don't know how I ever survived living out in the middle of nowhere, ten miles from the nearest town.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 04:12 pm (UTC)(link)
the weird thing about Seattle (if I remember from when I was there) is that within Seattle the mass transit is great, but you can't get from the suburbs or Tacoma to Seattle at all.

I'm within Minneapolis itself, but the mass transit is only good if you want to go to downtown or back out from downtown to somewhere else. It's not great otherwise

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It's getting better for the suburbs, but you have to wait a long damn time if you want to go anywhere outside downtown.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that highway from Tacoma to Seattle still a nightmare all the time?

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I-5 is always a nightmare. It's a perpetual traffic jam, I swear. They're doing quite a bit to try and help, but, so far, nothing seems to be working.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
it does seem like it was poorly planned out when it was built like that.

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't think they ever quite planned for the amount of traffic this city has.
