IT intelligence

No one where I work has been able to access their email accounts so the IT professionals were sent off -site to take a look at the email server. They discovered it's something they can't fix easily and the email system won't be working again until tomorrow at the earliest. So they let everyone know that... by sending a company-wide email, which oddly enough, didn't go through... I wonder why?

Oh, now that's special. Reminds me of the time when I called to tell Time Warner my phone was out, and the guy asked me if I was calling from my home line. Er. No.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-23 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, If only we had that kind of power, right?

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-23 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That's like when my internet was down and comcast told me to go online to seek help for the issue. *sigh* Tis better to laugh than scream in frustration, right?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Somebody I know has an icon that says, "It's better to light a flamethrower than to curse the darkness." I approve of that sentiment. *g*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oooh, I think I've seen that one! I need fancy icons! Or *cough* to actually remember to use anything other than my default one.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I associate that "Oh Captain, my Captain" one with you so strongly that any time I see an icon with Jack saluting, I automatically assume it's you.

There's one that I always think is [livejournal.com profile] unfeathered, too, whether it actually is or not.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's good right?

ahhh, [livejournal.com profile] unfeathered's "lick here" one? Me too! I actually have 8 or so icons... but I never remember to use them!

hmm... I'll need to find a SGA one for my x-over!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, that's good. I think so, anyway. Makes it easier on my poor brain when we have comment-fests.

You do need an SGA one!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I just sent the 'finished' version off to Jades. *eek*

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yay! It'll be FINE. I'm really looking forward to reading it.

Mine's done, yay! Back from Round 2 with [livejournal.com profile] unfeathered today, and she said she can't find anything else that needs fixing, so I'm good to go. I want to post it NOW. But I'll wait. *g*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Hooray for finishing!!! Is there a way things are usually posted for it?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
It looks like what happened last year is that karaokegirl made a post in her journal, and everybody posted links to their stories in comments, with the following header:

Title:
Pairing:
Rating:
Word Count:
Summary:
Why it's a costume:

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ahh, makes sense. So do you post the fic in your journal and then provide the link only there or can you post the story everywhere you normally would (like [livejournal.com profile] torch_wood etc)?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
You post to your journal and then link to the comments at the party post. As far as cross-posting, it doesn't say not to and it seems that several people last year did, or used them in prompt tables or whatever. It seems pretty informal.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
excellent, thanks! I didn't want to do the wrong thing. I have no idea where to post a SGA fic though

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome!

There's a big comm called [livejournal.com profile] sga_noticeboard that takes fic and discussion. Here are their rules, which look more intimidatng than they are:
http://community.livejournal.com/sga_noticeboard/profile

A comm I like (although not for this story) is [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic which posts a new writing prompt every couple of weeks.

I also watch [livejournal.com profile] mckay_sheppard, which is for McKay/Sheppard fic, if you write some of that in the future.

For this story, I'd probably post to the noticeboard. Then the newsletter will pick you up from there. Hope that helps!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Excellent! Thanks! I mostly read my SGA fic at ff.net, I never found the sga communities here. Ooh, and there are icons there too

What newsletter?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
This newsletter: [livejournal.com profile] sga_newsletter. *g*

Have fun looking through the icons! And the seven million fics--SGA is such an active fandom. It's cool.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
holy cow, and I thought there were a lot of SGA fics over at ff.net. The newsletter is HUGE

TW is TINY in comparison!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah. It's bigger than the Doctor Who newsletter, even. It's the fandom that ate fandom, basically.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I dived into the world of fandom with TW though, it is so nice and not overwhelming

(DW has a newsletter too? I didn't know that)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
It sure does: [livejournal.com profile] who_daily

I know what you mean. I read in big fandoms at first, but the first one I was really active in as far as writing and posting to comms was Dresden Files, which is tiny.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
How did I not know about that?

Dresden cracks me up because it's split between tv and books. Is it smaller than TW?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
TV-verse fandom is smaller than TW, I think. There's a flashfic comm that's still active, and dresdenfic is, too. There used to be a newsletter, but they only updated every week or so.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
flashfic or slashfic? small is good though... holy cow the DW newsletter is HUGE, just like the SGA. There's just too much to try to follow

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Flashfic. Flashfic comms are fandom-specific comms where new prompts are given every two weeks (usually) and anybody who wants to can write a short story (usually < 1000 words) based on the prompts. The prompts are usually general things like "darkness" or "flight" or something like that. due South has a flashfic comm, so does Dresden, and SGA. I don't think TW does, although it should.

Hee--I feel like the Encyclopedia of Fandom. Feeling overwhelmed yet? *g*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
No, no. It's great! I am so out of the loop, I know next to nothing about fandom and its world. I've heard of flashfic before but didn't know what it meant. (And I couldn't picture a slashfic Dresden pairing). It took me forever to figure out most of the terms because I was afraid to ask.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Hee--the biggest TV-verse slash pairing for Dresden is Harry/Bob, which is a bit tricky since one of 'em's a ghost. Never underestimate the ability of fandom to work around canon, though!

I was looking at your profile, and I don't see your interests listed. If you have interests listed, you can click on them and get a list of comms and people who have the same interest. Or you can just search by interest on the userinfo page. Er. Forgive me if this is too basic and you already know that.

Feel free to ask stuff! I promise not to laugh at you too hard. *g*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
harry/bob.... errr... the mind boggles...never underestimate is right!

Profile, yeah.. gotta work on that. I only added ANYTHING to it when [livejournal.com profile] rustydog made me the TIDE OF CATS icon since I was so amazed anyone would do that for me. I guess I should figure out the whole 'interests' thing.

If I offer donuts will you refrain from laughing?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
If I offer donuts will you refrain from laughing?

Uhm, maybe chocolate? *g*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'll offer chocolate, coffee, cookies, cake... whatever! Image

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
OK, then, it's a deal. (Damn, those look good.)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
When does chocolate not look good?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_medley_/ 2007-10-24 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
You do have a point. *g*

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
So they let everyone know that... by sending a company-wide email

But there are *procedures* that must be *followed*. If they weren't, the whole company would descend into the chaos of independent thinking and competent problem solving!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Right! What was I thinking? We wouldn't want to go there!!!

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
It appears to me that people are stupid. I might be wrong, though :D

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
or you have more common sense then these IT idiots....

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
No! You think? Isn't it impossible somehow to have more common sense than that?

How are you today, by the way? *bounces*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't work on wed, so I'm not dealing with those idiots. A very good thing! I'm trying to catch up on the fics that were posted yesterday. But I need caffeine before I can bounce... :)

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 05:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds nice :D Not dealing with idiots can always brighten your day. As can fics, methinks :D

I just had caffeine (and a discussion whether it's Kaffein or Koffein in German, 'cause I can never get that right anymore. English has taken over my brain), but generally, I can always bounce. Even when I'm sick, in my head I'll still be bouncy. Yay ♥

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Love your new icon!!! *sigh* Jack. Are you German? Or just speak it?

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
*bounces happily* Yes! I made icons! Posted 50 of them, too, over at [livejournal.com profile] shorikurai, if you want to have a look. Glad you like it, too. I certainly do *bounces more*

I'm German. Been German, never lived outside of Germany, never even left my city except for eight months spent in Dublin and what happens? My English is better than my German now *pouts*

Okay, not really, as long as I concentrate my German is still really good, but since I use English almost more than I use German, I still think in English all the time and that means the odd English word will slip into a German sentence if I don't pay attention. Or I start a sentence in German and notice halfway through that the certain sentence structure I was using doesn't even exist in the German language. I don't know if this should worry me. It probably should, right? What with German being my mother tongue and all that *sighs*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I shall have to go take a look!

I'm horribly impressed with anyone who can master more than one language. So even if you've managed to lose a bit of your german I'm still amazed you can be eloquent in more than one language!

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I love languages. My self-declared goal in life is to speak ten languages fluently. So far, I'm at two (German and English), my French is getting better, my Italian sucks and I've forgotten almost all the Japanese I knew. Which wasn't much to begin with. And Latin doesn't count since I can't actually speak that one.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy cow.And to think somedays I'm not even sure I can consider myself fluent in english...

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2007-10-24 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
You seem rather fluent to me :D
