What you've described is pretty much how I work. I never know what's going to happen, how it's going to end or how they're going to get there. Fortunately, the characters usually do :)

I've decided to learn how to make berry muffins. Need to start cooking. Hopefully they aren't hard.

I make muffins (that kind anyway) all the time, it's not hard. The trick is not to over mix the dough and cook it as soon as you can after the wet and dry ingredients are combined

I have to assume that you've only had bad crumpets. Or a traumatic experience, possibly involving crumpets, a pat of butter and a small nuclear explosion? They were my absolute favourite supper when I was little.

I'm not actually sure why I dislike them so much. They're weird things. Like... half-way between pancakes and toast. Maybe it was a nuclear explosion that put me off... I should see a hypnotist, see if he can re-awaken the latent memories.

or just decide to stay away from the crumpets and eat donuts instead

I think I'll stick with scones thank you.
