Jack?  Please shut up.  You're supposed to be in a tale of intrigue and aliens, not having tea with a giggling four year old.  Remember the mystery?  The reason this whole stupid story is being written in the first place?  Do you think you can address that part sometime this century?

Plot=hard.  Tea and crumpets=fun.  *sigh*

Life is hard. Eat a donut? ♥

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
excellent suggestion. thank you *munches*

[identity profile] chatona.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought you might appreciate it. Maybe if you bribe Jack with donuts, he'll cooperate?

Sometimes I think if the characters aren't cooperating, they're trying to tell you that what they're doing is important. That may sound crazy, but...yeah.

In one story I wrote, I wrote a chapter and then realised that nothing plotwise happened in the chapter, but I couldn't cut it out because Harry really needed to go and do that and in the end, it I was able to use it as a little aside that made him feel less alone.

So maybe Jack really needs to have some tea? Or he's being a jerk, whatever. You can always cut that part out later if it's not working.

*huggles*

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
that doesn't sound crazy, it makes sense. And

You can always cut that part out later if it's not working.

that's just excellent advice, especially since this is for [livejournal.com profile] tardis_bigbang so the story will need to be a scary 20,000 words!!! I might need a fair bit of filler for it

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that looks like fun! I'd love to have art or video done for one of my fics. Of course, I have to agree that 20,000 words is a hella lot for one story.

If it helps, think of 'real' novels - there's always dead ends and bits of fun to help ease the drama or taunt the reader a bit. So, let Jack have his tea (especially since it sounds sooo adorable!) and things will work out alright in the end.

[identity profile] jadesfire2808.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
If they're having fun, leave them to it. They'll find their way to a plot in the end.

I am of the firm belief that plotting is something that happens subconsciously as much as anything else, and it's not until I start writing or talking (pity [livejournal.com profile] miss_zedem who's been subjected to my ramblings in person...) that I work out what's going on. You just need a scenario, and a 'this is my point' idea, and then you can run with it.

Besides. Crumpets are yummy.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I'm not sure 100% what crumpets are...

But I'm just letting them ramble, I figure I can always trim out the scenes that don't work later. I'm pretty good at going at my stories with hacksaws and hand grenades without mercy.

I do have the scenario in mind, a vague sense of A, B, C etc- just no clear idea of how to get from A to B to C. I let my characters guide me, if that makes sense

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I'm not sure 100% what crumpets are...

Oh, crumpets are these wonderful little things. They're sort of like english muffins, they're all nook and cranny-y and they have a smooth bottom. You toast them and put butter on them or, my favourite, lemon curd or whatever (peanut butter is really good too). They're crispy and chewy and yummy. *nods* We eat them for breakfast at my house, but I'm sure they're good with tea too.

This is a crumpet:

Image (http://s172.photobucket.com/albums/w6/jadesfire2808/?action=view&current=Crumpet.jpg)

And if you google wrong, you will get rather unexpected results, involving women and not a lot of clothes. And no, I don't know how the association came about...

What you've described is pretty much how I work. I never know what's going to happen, how it's going to end or how they're going to get there. Fortunately, the characters usually do :)

I'd love to read the story of Jack talking to a giggling 4 year old. Is it Jack's? I love crumpets!! I'm assuming that crumpets are similar to scones.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
nope, not jack's kid- the daughter of the caretaker of the inn he's staying at. He's currently bemused by her nonstop chatter

[identity profile] kensieg.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
is the party over? I made some cute crustless tea sandwich triangles.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-14 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
oooh, I didn't think of having them have little sandwiches too! good idea!

[identity profile] aeron-lanart.livejournal.com 2008-01-15 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Any fig rolls? I love fig rolls. And Jaffa cakes. I'm taking orders for hot chocolate or cocoa as I don't like tea; it's Green and Blacks hot chocolate too (me big G&B fan). Maybe I'll pass on the fog rolls and have a chocolate chip shortbread instead, they're nice dunked.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-15 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
oooh chocolate chip shortbread! I've never seen G&B hot chocolate here, just the chocolate bars, which are yummalicious

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-01-15 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
fun in a pulling your hair out sort of way. I'm not TOO worried. in a 20000 or so fic, if 800 words are a about a tea party that's stilll pretty minor.... I just need to get back to the point at SOME time

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2008-01-18 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
