Bill the Cat for President

Okay, I'm probably showing my age here, but I've gotten a little annoyed with the calls by people questioning who I will be voting for on "Super Tuesday" (when so many states have primaries or caucuses).  I just don't think it's anyone's business but mine.  So, when I got the third call this morning I replied, "Bill the Cat."

"Bill the Cat?"

"Yeah, I know he hasn't officially ran since 1988, but I think he'd be perfect for the job."

"A cat?"

"Yes, a cat.  And with luck he'll be able to get Opus on his ballot as VP again.  A cat and a penguin are just what this country needs."

Oddly enough, the annoying pollster hung up on me then... hmmm, I wonder why?

Am I the only one who remembers this?

*giggle* Evil but brilliant.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
*bows* thank you m'dear!

[identity profile] awanderingbard.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I was only two in 1988, and in Canada, so Bill the Cat may be before my time. I still think you're awesome, though. :D The way you Yanks run your politics makes my brain hurt. We don't get callers, usually, but sometimes different parties will come door to door and flog themselves at us.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Politics here makes my brain hurt too. There has to be a better way than bombarding people with political rhetoric for 6 months before you can even vote and then turning to smear campaigns for the next 9 months before you can vote again. *sigh*

This time around there hasn't been too many door to door people, maybe the extreme cold played a part in that?

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
If you lived somewhere where your vote didn't matter, you'd be free of the advertising and calls! The politicians pretty much ignore us down here. It's peaceful. But it doesn't make you feel excited about voting, if nobody who is looking for votes even thinks yours would make a difference!

I don't remember Bill the Cat's run for President, but I didn't really start paying attention until '92. I missed out!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I was too young to vote then, but I remembered the comic strip.

MN's a big topic this year. It's always voted Dem- in every single presidential election since it became a state (the only one to do that) but last election it was a lot closer than usual and "they" are saying this year it just might go republican.

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like a blessing and a curse! I agree with your comment above about our crazy system. I wish the whole thing would just start maybe three months before the final election, and get done with it.

Arkansas was close last election, and the voting went oddly, so they've been calling it a swing state. It's just that we don't have enough delegates or electors to make a difference. Sigh. If I weren't passionate about civic duty for its own sake, I might have a hard time being motivated to vote.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
MN doesn't have that many delegates either... but I guess when elections are as close as they have been every 3 or so makes the difference.

SO with you about the whole stupid civic duty thing... *sigh* There were a few elections I thought my vote actually meant something and could make a difference. *double sigh*

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks like you have 4 more electors than us - I wonder what the magic number is for putting resources into a campaign in a particular place? With delegates to the conventions, I can't keep those rules straight for anything. When it takes an hour to explain to smart people how something works? It's too complicated!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
seriously- the whole dang this is so terribly confusing. I assume it was planned to be that way though

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes. The founding fathers had almost zero faith in the Common Man. It's better if the elite, in-the-know people obfuscate and run everything, because the will of the unwashed masses might mess things up. (I go back and forth between that and "Well, there are a lot of really dumb people in the world..." Of course, this makes me feel like one of them! Heh.)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
hmm, you do have a point about there being a lot of stupid people in the world, but still.. it would be nice if trying to explain things didn't result in *quite* such a headache

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Less headache would be great. I would like for our electoral process these days to actually *be* more democratic (as opposed to mind-scramblingly representative) but in order to do that they would definitely have to simplify. I just can't think simplification of some things would be bad! It took me 45 minutes of internet research to find out which ballots I'll be able to choose from on Tuesday.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Same thing here. It's just so frustrating

[identity profile] phoenix64.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That is pretty much squarely right in my time, so as a fellow Bloom County fan, thank you muchly!

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-04 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
*tips hat* happy to oblige!

And YAY for another Bloom County fan!

In a similar vein...

I keep a Bible with bookmarks in it near the front door for confounding religious people who insist that it contains all the rules we need to live by.

(Please understand, I have nothing against people who believe, but I see no reason that they should try and make me believe as they do. Belief is a matter for each person to decide for themselves.)

But a few quotes about multiple wives, slavery, and stoning those who work on the Sabbath usually clears my doorstep in record time.

Re: In a similar vein...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
that rocks! We've used similar arguments when people try to use the bible as a reason against same sex marriages, either follow it all or quit shoving your beliefs down my throat.

[identity profile] k-haldane.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
You could always throw David at them:-

I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women."

And David's one of the heroes! (Mind you, there was that incident when he wanted some other guy's wife, and arranged to have him killed in battle so David could scoop up his widow...)

Re: In a similar vein...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
eh, minor little incident, where's the harm in that? :)

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to have to try that one...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
it gets them to get off the phone in a hurry, so it's a win in my book!

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Anything that gets pollsters off the phone voluntarily is a win.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I try not to be rude or randomly hang up on anyone... but *damn* they can be annoying sometimes. Saying "Bill the Cat" has now worked twice and quite easily. I am so happy

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. If you can make them hang up without being rude, all the better.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
and if I happen to screw up their lovely little survey, too bloody bad

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
would have been funnier if the pollsters actually knew who I was talking about though

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
drat it being 20 years out of date.. there needs to be new comic characters running for office!

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Or they just need to bring back Bill and Opus...

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
I have the urge to go find the Christmas special of them, now.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
there's a christmas special?

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. It's this hour long cartoon thing in which Opus sets out to save Christmas or something. There is warp-speed Santa in there. It's hilarious.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
I must have missed it somehow.

[identity profile] pointytilly.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
I was going to say Saxon if anyone bothered me about my voting preferences, but now I am tempted to say Bill The Cat. Bloom County was awesome. (Yeah, I'm a bit young for it, but that's what books are for!)

Decisions, decisions...

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
oooh, I didn't even think of Saxon. That would work too! :)

Happy Donut Day

[identity profile] snufflesdbear.livejournal.com 2008-02-05 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Meant to send this as a nudge, but realized I couldn't :-)) Anyway, happy Donut Day to you

OMG, I had no idea about this, THANK YOU! *vbg*

[identity profile] dserene1.livejournal.com 2008-02-24 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Bwahahahahaha!

OK, I'll admit I was too young to understand the whole politics of it at the time (I was a teen, that's my excuse), but I loved Bloom County with a passion. So much so that our computer is named Opus.

I'm Canadian and am trying my best not to make any comments about the American political machine, but loved your response to the person on the phone.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-02-24 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
oh there's a lot to complain/comment about there with that.

But.. :) getting the pollsters to shut up and leave me alone was wonderful. and YAY for computer Opus!
