My Life is a Dilbert Cartoon

I spent the last hour and a half or so taking tickets for an event that had no tickets issued for it.

Yep, I sat there because I was assigned to take tickets even though there WERE NO TICKETS.

How does something like that happen you ask?  Well, the work assignments for the annual meeting are drawn up every ten years and assigned by job title.  So, as Assistant Membership Director, I collect tickets.  As it happens the decision was made to quit printing tickets seven years ago, but that minor detail hasn't affected the duty roster yet.  Why?  Because they only rewrite and reassign jobs for the annual meeting every ten years because (as my boss said when I asked her about it) "that's the way it's always been done."

*blinks*

Gotta love corporate logic.

aren't you lucky you have me around to teach you such things?

although, with luck, you'll never be in a mind numbing job like this.

I just hope I don't have to resort to an office job to pay back my student loans.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I was lucky on that front and didn't have that many loans, two summers of living at home and lifeguarding earned me enough to stockpile in the bank for when they came due. I worked like a dog (6am-7pm 3 days and 10-7 3 days) one of the summers, but it was worth it to be able to pay off the loans completely when they came due

Unfortunately, my parents have to pay off about half of my loans because the college decided they earned too much for all the loans to be put under my name (despite the whole filing for bankruptcy thing), but, then, I also don't have to pay off nearly as much as I would've and they're completely happy to help me out, so I'm pretty lucky. Add to that the fact that I only have two years of loans to pay off, and I really don't think I have too much to worry about.

*nods* not having ridiculous loans is a GOOD thing

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad now that I decided to get those first two years out of the way in community college.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I was lucky in that my parents had saved up quite a bit. I'm trying to do the same for my kids, we already have pretty significant college funds for both of them

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
That's definitely a good thing. I think I'm rather lucky that two of my three brothers decided not to go.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I really hope both mine go, and this way I'll be ready (although who knows what college will cost in another 8 years)

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, at least you'll be somewhat ready.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
and compound interest is a lovely friend to have on your side as well

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
not when it's interest building on loans though, but thankfully student loans aren't bad like that. It's credit cards that you have to look out for

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Interest building on savings is definitely far better than interest building on loans.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-06-21 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* although a surprising number of people never clue into that

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
To have common sense and be responsible? Yes, definitely.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
common sense is quite rare these days. As is responsibility, especially fiscal responsibility- one of the things I do in my job is assign scholarships for reduced membership fees and camp costs. The amount some people make but then they can't manage their $$ is sickening.

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
It really is. My parents are always amazed by how well I manage my money, but it's really not that hard. Pay rent, buy food, buy other necessities, save a little, and then, if you've got some left over, have a bit of fun.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
ah, but no one gets that. Or they qualify what is a 'necessity' strangely. They need their $100 a month cell phone plan and fancy car and three starbucks drinks a day

[identity profile] the-dark-side.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I'm actually glad I got rid of my car when I did. I'd never survive if I had to pay for gas.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2008-06-22 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
well, living where you do, it makes a lot of sense because you can walk or get mass transit to everywhere you need to go. I wish I could do that to more places around here
