Hummus, or hommus, is a garlicky chickpea spread.

The two words are not interchangeable.

Every time a fic references someone being scared of the "evil hummus" I think of that old Far Side cartoon where the potato salad has gone bad and is holding the mayo and ketchup at gunpoint.
