Trying to find this book again

Jan. 1st, 2026 04:45 am
[personal profile] demeaninglion6 posting in [community profile] findthatbook
I cannot remember the name of the book nor the author and this is basically my last resort, ive been trying to find it on and off since middle school and have been unsuccessful.
a kid is out with his parents (either at a dig site with his dad or at a picnic with him) and stumbles upon an arrowhead leftover from a war. the kid touches it and pricks his finger on it while also absorbing a sliver of the arrowhead and gains the power to absorb powers from other people (I can't remember if he has to kill them or not), he ends up falling in love with a snake demon lady? but she never reciprocates. and her dad was also the one the war was about. at the end of the book the evil guy goes back in time and changes history and that's how the book ends.

I love this quote.  It's actually good advice.

Don't chase your dreams.

Creators revealed!

Creators for Late Treat Bonanza 2025 have now been revealed and the collection is now closed for posting.

As mentioned at the start of this round, I will NOT be running a Mid-Year Bonanza this year. However, I *will* be running a round of [community profile] crackthewip over here. Crack the WIP is a very flexible and simple event for finishing WIPs. This includes finishing up old gifts, works for past events, personal projects, etc., and it includes fanworks of any media. I've set the due date to be June 30th, which is a similar deadline to what the mid-year bonanza would have been, so if you're looking for an event to finish up some late treats, this might work for you! Note, however, that the Crack the WIP collection this year is revealed (i.e. works posted to it show up immediately rather than remain hidden) and there is no anonymous period for that event -- which may be a good or bad thing, depending on your needs!

Otherwise, I'll see you here in September for the next round of Late Treat Bonanza! Please let me know if you have any feedback or suggestions on how this round went and how future rounds should be run. At the moment, the only change I am planning on making is that I might tweak the terminology a bit to try to make it a little more clear at a glance what sign-ups do / how the event works in terms of creating vs. signing up. Let me know if you have any other suggestions.

Hope everyone has a happy new year!

Poem: "Ruling from Beneath"

This poem was written outside the regular prompt calls. It was inspired by a remark from [personal profile] fuzzyred. It also fills the "Deep Blue Sea" square in my 5-1-25 card for the Colors Fest Bingo. This poem has been sponsored by a pool with [personal profile] fuzzyred. It belongs to the Kraken thread of the Polychrome Heroics series.

"Ruling from Beneath"

Kraken had always contained
enough scientists to understand
observation changing experiments.

They realized that ruling from beneath
would cause less ripples, less risk of
rocking the boat, than trying to be
the shadow behind the throne.

Nobody would ever look for
world leaders underneath
the deep blue sea.

Hi everyone! I'm running a round of Crack the WIP during the first half of 2026. If you want to start the year by finishing off some old projects, and maybe need a deadline and some company or encouragement to push it across the finish line, come join us!

How it works:

Sign up below and tell us a little bit about what you're working on if you want! You can always change your mind later and drop or switch to a different project(s) as your plans change -- signing up isn't a commitment, just an idea of what you might make.

Then when it's finished, post your completed work to the AO3 collection. Note: Important change for this round is that the AO3 collection does NOT keep works hidden. So you can add your works to the collection as long as the work is complete. The collection is moderated and only complete works by people who have signed up will be accepted into it.

Throughout the creation period, we'll have regular (optional) check-ins (and round-ups/celebrations of any newly-finished works), and a final round-up of works at the end.

Sign-ups:

To sign up, copy the text below, paste it into your comment, and answer the questions. If you want to sign up to make more than one thing, just answer once for each thing. Anon comments are turned on, so you can sign up even if you don't have a DW account.

Schedule:

The deadline for WIP-finishing is June 30 this year. Sign-ups are open until then. After that date, the collection will be closed!

Public Domain Day Bingo Card 1-1-26

Here is my card for the Public Domain Day Bingo over in [community profile] allbingo. The fest runs from January 1-31. (See all my 2026 bingo cards.)

If you'd like to sponsor a particular square, especially if you have an idea for what character, series, or situation it would fit -- talk to me and we'll work something out. I've had a few requests for this and the results have been awesome so far. This is a good opportunity for those of you with favorites that don't always mesh well with the themes of my monthly projects. I may still post some of the fills for free, because I'm using this to attract new readers; but if it brings in money, that means I can do more of it. That's part of why I'm crossing some of the bingo prompts with other projects, such as the Poetry Fishbowl.

Underlined prompts have been filled.

Since I stopped posting regularly I have:

* Become very normal about hockey goalies. The above goalie is the Kraken's Joey Daccord.

* written 8 Heated Rivalry fanfics (actually more than 8, some of it I posted anon)

* Remember when I was all 'guys, hey there is this show coming out about gay hockey players and no one is talking about it:( really it's so relevant to fandom interests and...' Yeah, so, that show did happen become a bit of a thing. I feel like I got hit by a steamroller. I went from feeling like an over-invested fan to not being able to keep up with all the promo photoshoots.

* I drew the bookstore that runs the book clubs I am in. Sort of. I meant to color it and also fix a few things, but for Xmas I just added an anthro reindeer and posted it to the book clubs discord, and now people have printed stickers of it to put in their journals:

Far from what I wanted, but honestly a project coming together even that much? Man, just a project coming together rather than falling apart was amazing.

* I've also taken to watching hockey on Sundays at Sports Bra. Portland, we don't have a good place to watch boy's hockey but we have an amazing bar to watch women's hockey. On one hand, amazing that I have a place like that to watch hockey, even if it's interrupted by drag performances... especially because it's interrupted by drag performances sometimes. On the other, I just really want to drink a beer in a sports bar with guys and watch NHL. It's amazing but also like... *hand gestures*

* I read 53 books this year. I might still finish Murder Between Us before midnight. Maybe.

* I am going to start posting here somewhat, but I am also, well, we'll see how it goes.

What did I do in 2025? Hell if I know. A lot of people asked and about all I could say is I watched a lot of movies and TV shows and spent a bunch of time learning Chinese. I caught up with one set of friends and friends-of-friends for New Year's, and had a great time. I had non-dairy pizza, and non-alcoholic cocktails, and listened to people's opinions on the best superhero, and talked to a guy about Heated Rivalry and then his boyfriend played All the Things She Said during his DJ set.

I rung in the new year dancing to 3am! Something I am apparently still capable of doing! I am... very sore now, though 🤣

Happy new year, friends, and I hope 2026 treats us all well

Planning Ahead Goals for 2027

This is a new post to track goals that I want to set for 2027. During January, the 2026 list will remain relatively fluid. I might add a few things to it later on. Toward the end of the year, however, I usually start thinking of goals for the following year. Previously, I started putting those at the bottom of the 2024 goals list. So I figured it was time to make a separate post for this purpose. That should make it easier to compose the goal list for 2027 when the time comes.

Friending Memes in 2026

Friending memes, or friendzies, offer a great way to connect with new people. It occurs to me that I can list them here, with links to my entries, and have a useful reference.

This is the best time of year to run such events, because lots of people dust off their blogs in January. Also, [community profile] snowflake_challenge runs this month with challenges on odd-numbered days, and it's among the biggest events on Dreamwidth. (See my 2023 post on Friending Memes.)
