There were severa new onesl I enjoyed a lot, like Alien: Earth and Pluribus, with the later being hands down the best new series I saw in 2025. And Andor, some minor (for me) nitpicks aside, ended superbly, plus unfortunately more current day politically relevant than ever. But my favourite series in 2025 was Foundation, season 3. And here are some reasons why:

For the third time, this show managed to present a new ensemble of characters per season (plus the few recurring ones) and made me care about them. Now I remember several shows that were originally intended to be "anthology" shows - the one that immediately comes to mind is Heroes - i.e. where the idea was to present a new cast of characters every season - and which when the first season was a success changed their mind because the audience had fallen in love with these characters. Unfortunately, this also meant that the subsequent seasons showed there had been no plan, not even a vague character arc kind of plan, for those characters, and the show quality rapidly diminished, making me wish they'd stuck to the anthology concept. Now Foundation, to me, found a happy medium between the "anthology" concept which its intended huge time spam demands and the fact that most viewers do want some characters to remain attached to, or at least interested in, who are around for more than one season. And they manage it twofold: courtesy of in-universe plot devices, there are in fact some characters around through all three seasons so far - Gail Dornick, Demerzel and sort, kinda, Hari Seldon in a spoilery fashion ). And there are three more actors araound through all three seasons playing different characters who are at the same time variations of the same character, i.e. the Cleonic Dynasty exponents, clones in different stages of aging. (It's not unimportant that they play clones because the stories and developments each Cleon takes in each season are richer and more interesting if you have other Cleons to compare them to.)

But, and this is an important but: the show also offers characters who are around only in one season/era the show takes place. (Or two at most, sob.) And manages to make them interesting and different from each other. Here I would argue the show grew from season 1 - where there were some interesting, memorable characters around, like the Luminarian priestess, but also some which for me didn't work in the way they were intended (the Huntress) - to season 2, where basically every single new character was interesting - Constant, Hober Mallow, Space!Belisarius etc.. In fact, I was so attached to the s2 newbies that I kept wondering whether the show would manage to do it again after the next time jump, and the first s3 episode or two left me a bit sceptical on that count - but then I changed my mind. Granted, I still am lukewarm about Pritcher, but Toran and Bayta were great (not just due to the spoilery thing at the end of the season, though it makes the rewatch of s3 I just finished even more rewarding), I loved Ambassador Quent, and the First Speaker as well.

Another reason: s3 offered the pay off to several long term mysteries and developments - from who was responsible for the destruction of the Star Bridge (and why) to why a spoilery for s2 thing happened ) - , wrapped up one of THE major storylines of the show which is spoilery for s3 ), and did it in a way that was both unepected yet made perfect character sense, and set up enough new questions and storylines which make glad there is a season 4 already secured: For example, Spoilery Questions asked )

And then there's the superb long term character development. [personal profile] bimo commented s1 Gaal would be horrified by s3 Gaal's actions, and yet they are perfecty ic due to the development in between and bring things full circle, in a way. Rewatching s3, I noticed spoilery things about Demerzel in particular. ) And the Cleons! That Lee Pace is excellent is almost a given, and s3's Day's development went from seeming comic relief to absolutely shattering, but s3's Dusk and Dawn both got more to do than in previous seasons, and both Terence Mann and Cassian Bilton ran with it. In fact, when I find the time I'll do a poll asking about everyone's favourites Day, Dawn and Dusk, if such a thing exists, taking all three seasons into account. Speaking of things paying off even more upon rewatch, Dusk's first scene in s3 is watching the recording of other Dusks becoming Brother Darkness and "ascending", which, yeah. S3 does a lot not just with the confrontation with mortality, but also the search for meaning especially for the long term characters. Hari Seldon related spoilery observation )

And there's the way the show asks questions the books couldn't, lacking the concept of the Cleonic Dynasty. Demerzel and the Cleons: A Tale in Three Seasons )

Lastly: I loved s3 for the way it gave us new combinations of long term characters. Which are spoilery. ) And for being such an acting showcase for both recurring actors - Terence Mann certainly owned those last three episodes when he was on screen - and new to the show ones: Synnøve Karlsen as Bayta first and foremost, with again rewatching letting me additionally admire what she does there. (Though this time around I knew she was the same actress who had played Clarice Orsini in I Medici and young Cassandra Austen in Miss Austen, I forgot all about it again when watching her on screen. "We're good at making people love us, you and I", as she says to Magnifico. Indeed.

Snowflake Challenge: A close up shot of an owl ornament hanging amidst pine boughs..

Challenge #3
Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

There is a lot of things about fandom that deserve praise, as much as it can get frustrating sometimes. For this particular post, though, I want to give a bit of a shout-out to a small, often overlooked part of fandom: the femslash corners of it <3

In some particular fandoms those corners are pretty huge and active, which is delightful to see, but in general f/f has a smaller presence than other categories. However, the creativity that buzzes in said corners is always beautiful to see. The people who feel passion for it are truly dedicated and put their all into their creations.

I love writing it myself. I'm looking forward to the next instances of the [community profile] threesentenceficathon or [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles for that very purpose, because I know those kinds of events are great sources of inspiration for myself (and hey, maybe if I'm lucky, I'll receive some small f/f gifts myself :P). I'm also going to keep an eye on [community profile] 100femslash and see if I can complete the challenge myself.

And... I was simply going to mention my plans, but I went ahead and dived into the deep end of the pool and created [community profile] dcfemslashevents , exactly what it says on the tina community to host and organise (and boost) femslash events for DC characters! As the sticky post says, there are some plans for this year underway, and I'll likely talk more about it during the Snowflake Challenge, if I get the chance.

Challenge #5
In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

Let's keep it to the theme!
  • Give me your best femslash recs! In fic or any other form. Those that you think are truly good, that stayed with you, that you want everyone else to experience.
  • Tell me about your favourite femslash ships, the first ones you liked, the F/F books, shows, films etc. you're obsessed with, the ones you write about yourself... Anything femslash!
  • I would welcome someone who'd want to help with the DC Femslash Events community, but no pressure :P
Challenge #6
Top 10 Challenge.

For this, I'll post 10(ish) femslash ships I wish to see more of, in general.
  • Maxanor, aka Eleanor Guthrie and Max, from Black Sails. Do not get me wrong: I love Maxanne, the clear fandom favourite, but I'm hungry for more Maxanor. Fics exploring their doomed romance, what-if scenarios, things about how they begun... anything!
  • Rosewaves, aka Rosita Bustillos and Waverly Earp, from Wynonna Earp. Oh, that ship absolutely ensnared me way back when! I'd love to see more creations focused on it (and only it, because the canon f/f ship was just... fine, to me LOL).
  • I made that community for a reason, so, yeah, more DC rareships. I'm particularly charmed by the idea of Cass Cain/Kate Kane, though I know it's difficult for it to match what I want for the ship LOL :P. Same for Stephanie Brown/Selina Kyle, another ship I feel has a lot of potential.
  • The Buffyverse fandom definitely has a lot of femslash going around! But I would really appreciate more of it including Kendra Young. Buffy/Kendra or Faith/Kendra, of course, but also Willow/Kendra... and some fucked up Drusilla/Kendra, especially in AUs where she turned her.
  • The 100 is another fandom where I'd love to see some rareships that get less attention, and I will continue to prompt them LOL. Octavia/Diyoza, Echo/Clarke, Clarke/Josephine (those are the only two Clarke ships I like LOL), Echo/Gaia, Raven/Indra...
  • Last year I reread Emma, by Jane Austen, and well. I will always root for Emma/Jane Fairfax, in my heart :P
  • Legacies also had some great ships, and Hizzie reigns in my heart, but Lizzie/Aurora, Lizzie/Ablah, Lizzie/Jen, Lizzie/Alyssa... all ships I'd love to see more of.
  • More femslash in Reign, my old beloved fandom. Especially among/featuring the ladies in waiting: Greer, Lola, Kenna. Either between them, or with other characters.
  • Femslash fic in Foundation! I know they're bio mother and daughter, but welp, Gaal and Salvor technically share a kiss on screen and their dynamic is unusual, to say the least. We all know if these were two white men it would've sparked a juggernaut ship lol. And the female characters in this show are all fascinating, I'd love to read more about them, for the fandom to have more fics!
  • June and Athena's dynamic was the most fascinating part of R.F. Kuang's Yellowface, and I'd love to see a bit more of it.

I'd like to put my money where my mouth is and post (some more, in a few cases) fics for at least some of these ships on 2026!

Aaaaand that's all. I'm all caught up now :P

Hi everyone and welcome to 2026!

You'll have picked up that there's a lot of sex in the show (and book) Heated Rivalry. And, unsurprisingly, there's a lot in the fanfic.

And one thing I'm having to deal with is a bunch of otherwise perfectly readable authors referring to "cum". It almost knocks me out of the mood, but not quite.

Having issues about spelling come as cum is doubtless linked with me being older than dirt and having learned English not just in school but from reading a hell of a lot of novels (before sinking without trace into fanfic). And I probably associate cum with porn dialogue, so that's partly an embarrassment thing, and partly me being a snob.

Anyway, I did some research on the interwebs and the most frequent viewpoint is:
  • cum is the noun
  • come is the verb
From etymonline.com, cum dates from 1973, initially used as a noun and mostly in porn, now used more widely and as both a noun and verb. Come is obviously a lot older, but as a synonym for ejaculating it seems to date from the 1500-1600s, and as semen, from the 1920s.

Which is all very well, but I just have a visceral dislike of the word cum. I'm going "ew, gross", like Shane when people use the term "lovers". It looks like a spelling mistake to me, and I doubt I'll ever use it in a fic except in a fake porn video title. So that leaves me stubbornly using come, or writing in a way that avoids the word altogether, because I am also not going to use "semen" or (worse) "ejaculate", except in very specific circumstances. Not to mention "reach completion" or "climax". Nope. Slang terms like jizz, spunk and spooge are sometimes okay in dialogue though, or in the pov of characters where it wouldn't be ooc.

What about you: come or cum? Enquiring minds want to know! Don't feel limited to its use in Heated Rivalry - this applies in most fandoms, and in some profic, I bet.

From Hong Kong, [personal profile] thevetia and I flew to Hangzhou, China (~2 hours' flight). Hangzhou, a sprawling city of over 11 million, is the capital of Zhejiang Province and is most famous for its West Lake. It was the capital city of the Southern Song dynasty from 1132-1276. It's where Chinese tech giant Alibaba is headquartered, is home to several universities, and has been referred to as a tech capital/Silicon Valley. Zhejiang Province's history includes the Neolithic Liangzhu culture (~3300-2300 BCE), and the region is known for its longjing ("dragonwell") green tea.

I got a set of cute little penguin pens. They're very cute. So cute.

I didn't realize that each pen has a little motto on it, or I might've not bought them. You see, one continuing annoyance since childhood is that writing on pens is always upside down if you're left-handed. Oh, you can get pens where the writing is oriented correctly, that is, for lefties, but for some reason all that writing inevitably is left-handed themed! I don't want my right side up pen motto to say something like "Only lefties are in their right mind!", I want it to say something like "Hope you are happy every day", which is the upside down motto on this purple penguin.

It's the same with left-handed rulers, incidentally. I just want the numbers to go in a sensible direction, I don't need my ruler to affirm how wonderful it is that I'm drawing lines with my left hand.

On a related note, I'm seriously considering buying another pair of lefty kitchen shears for work. I don't really have to spend much time in the kitchen, but if I am in the kitchen and using kitchen shears (almost inevitably to cut up the next day's lunch sandwiches but sometimes to cut up breakfast pancakes and sausages) I'd rather use mine than theirs, because cutting with the wrong scissors is painful and messy. But if I bring my sole pair - which is amazing, I love it, best Christmas present ever! - back and forth with me then sometimes I use it at home, forget to put it back in my bag, and then am irritated for three days until I finally remember again. I could ask them to supply shears for me and keep them in the kitchen drawer, it's a legitimate (and small!) expense, but honestly, I know from experience that righties are terrible and when they accidentally use left-handed scissors they get very confused and irritated. Amusing for me, but undoubtedly an exercise in frustration for a workplace. It's really better all around to bring my own.

Challenge #01: The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

I'm a fangirl who has been involved with fandom for a very long time, started my online fandom journey on LJ in 2003 and I haven't stopped since. As one can see on my profile just a taste of the various fandoms and interests that I'm into.

When it comes to [community profile] snowflake_challenge, I have participated in the challenge itself for some years because, ultimately, it's just fun. I like being given prompts where I can give insightful answers to, I like the level of engagement it provides with interacting with others with fannish interests, from just those on your friendslist to others who participated in this challenge. Which is another thing, last year was the first time I actively participated in the challenge by linking my posts to the community and reading/commenting on others who also participated in the challenge, as well. I miss fandom engagement like that, and that's why I like doing this challenge every year.

Mattel adds an autistic Barbie to doll line

NEW YORK -- Mattel Inc. is introducing an autistic Barbie on Monday as the newest member of its line intended to celebrate diversity, joining a collection that already includes Barbies with Down syndrome, a blind Barbie, a Barbie and a Ken with vitiligo, and other models the toymaker added to make its fashion dolls more inclusive.
[---8<---]
For example, the eyes of the new Barbie shift slightly to the side to represent how some people with autism sometimes avoid direct eye contact, he said. The doll also was given articulated elbows and wrists to acknowledge stimming, hand flapping and other gestures that some autistic people use to process sensory information or to express excitement, according to Mattel.

I had a week off work - I think it was more a "work doesn't want to see full numbers of people back in the office until halfway through January, so if there's anyone who can be taken off the work roster during this time, do it".

Which, I had generally a good week, got some good writing in, managed to rejig the part of Nullifae 1 which had been giving me trouble, and have sorted out the "losing the mentor" part of the story and how we get there. Also, discovered a few things that will be relevant in later books (when we get there). A relief.

On Tuesday, B1 and I went to see the Ashes 5th Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, had a good day of watching Aussies bat, a couple of hundreds gained, one of my sister's favourite cricketers play what could well have been his last innings (but wasn't), and saw Australia get ahead to the tune of about 230 runs - a nice cushion.

On Monday, we lost a chicken.

tw: not a peaceful going

Carambar was supposed to be one of our 'long-lived' girls. We bought two of a newly-developed heritage breed that were supposed to lay many eggs while still keeping going. It might be that their bloodlines may need a bit more breeding to properly settle, because the first one died with possible neurological issues having never laid an egg, and Carambar only laid for about 12 months before developing complications with laying, and needing a chip to keep her from laying.

She was otherwise perfectly healthy and surviving well. Unfortunately, while both B1 and myself were away from home, the neighbour's dog got out, chased her out of the yard and under the house. When we got her out (after the neighbour came and reclaimed her dog), she had been bitten about the head enough that she was bleeding and injured, and when we got her to the vet it turned out her wing was broken. We didn't have the resources and energy to try to get her back to health, so we had to have her put down.

The neighbour paid for the vet bill, but we're still furious about her dogs. She's nearly 70 and has two bouncing, energetic young spaniel-type dogs that she has always struggled to keep on a leash, and which she's been nice white lady oblivious to anything but her joy in gossipy conversation when walking them. They're probably companionship for her - her son is married, and her daughter self-terminated about 7 years ago - but she's not up to controlling them, and they keep getting out of her place. She's always apologetic, but that doesn't stop the fact that one of our chickens died because of her dogs!

Anyway. That was the start of the week.

By Wednesday the temperatures were rising, by Saturday it was nutso. 42C by 6pm...and then our street power went off. Just our street. *sigh*

A friend invited me over for a swim, and I spent a lovely hour in her pool with her youngest daughter, and then about 20 minutes discussing politics with her husband, brother-in-law, and older daughter. And when I went home, the power was back on again.

Today - first day back at work - has been tiring, but nothing dire. I did go to the gym this morning, and ended up walking 1. I have a call to Jury Duty, but I suspect I can't get out of it this time. Although my boss has just messaged me - apparently contracting is considered 'self-employed', so I might have a chance not to lose 3 months worth of income...

Had a person wander into the 2nd floor corridor looking for the women's washroom. Alas, our 2nd floor women's washroom stopped being functional this week end so all I had to offer was three gender neutral washrooms... one of which is usually the men's.

Then it occurred to me the corridor she came from is from the "new" part of Hagey, the accounting section. While she was hesitating, looking unhappy at the choices offered, I asked if that was where she was from. She said yes, so I told her that section has a very nice (zero barrier) women's on the main floor. Off she went.

Once she was gone, it struck me as odd that she would wander as far as old Hum looking for a washroom.t.

I mentioned this to my supervisor and yeah, apparently because it's an expansion of Hagey, it didn't have to have all the amenities an independent building of the same size would have to have. Thus the comparative lack of washrooms, and a total lack of elevators.

There aren’t many currently airing shows I’m interested in, so I’m focusing on slowly returning to the ones I left unfinished before 2025 ended. I also want to try watching shorter Korean and Japanese shows before the flood of new releases starts again.

I want to avoid feeling overwhelmed, and I also want to read more… as much as my brain allows. Sometimes it just refuses, and if I force myself, I end up feeling demand-avoidant, which isn’t useful at all.

I’ve also started tracking the fics I’m reading, because why not? Let’s see if my OCD doesn’t take over, hahaha. I hope I can keep it under control.

Now, let’s see the update.

Peach Trap. A cute boy is fired unjustly from his job, and then we learn there are three guys interested in him. They start actively pursuing him, and that’s it. It was short, which is why I decided to give it a try, but I didn't like it in the end. At first it looked cute and some parts really were, but the protagonist didn't have a personality… his entire character was just that the three guys liked him. It reminded me a bit of Secret Relationships (only a bit, because of the 3:1 situation), but in that show the protagonist at least had something interesting going on inside his head and I enjoyed the toxicity and unhingedness. Here, the protagonist just seemed to be a cutie, but nothing else. Maybe I’m too picky now, or maybe I wasn’t in the mood for a fluffy substanceless show… I don’t know. I think what frustrated me most is that I didn’t even find it that entertaining. I’ve watched mid shows lately, but this one felt a bit like a chore at times, and that’s with only eight short episodes. So yeah…

Love Begins in the World of If. It's about an office worker who finds it difficult to fit into his new role, even a year after being transferred to the sales department. He finds a mysterious mirror in a shrine that helps him see his “ideal self” and transports him to a different world. The first episode is very gloomy and incredibly relatable, so of course I wanted to see where it was going… and I ended up enjoying it so much. It’s also incredibly bingeable, with only six episodes of about half an hour each.

I love Japanese BL stories about sad office workers who find love, stories that feel deeply familiar. This one really hits on the theme of asking for help and not closing yourself off, plus the idea that your attitude toward the world fundamentally shapes how you see everything and even how others treat you. I know because I talked about this exact thing in therapy not long ago, and how frustrating it is that it’s actually true. I liked this one A LOT.

Currently watching

Me and Thee. This episode was my least favorite, and it highlights an issue I have with a lot of Thai shows: they rush things in a way where the ending is emotionally satisfying, but not necessarily in a narratively coherent way… The conflicts that seemed so important in previous episodes get resolved too easily, making them feel gratuitous in the first place. There’s also the issue of wanting to include many plot points without having enough runtime to really develop and resolve them without rushing. It happened with My Magic Prophecy too, and I find it frustrating.
Now I’m curious about the novel it’s based on, to see if it’s a source material issue or an adaptation issue.

That being said, I still enjoyed it, I still adore Thee, and I definitely liked it a lot more than MMP… But I don’t know, I don’t know… Most of the GMMTV shows I’ve watched lately have this issue, and I think the screenwriters really need to take a different approach, but let’s be honest, I don’t think that will happen. Again, maybe I'm just becoming too picky. Maybe the really good, well-written shows I’ve watched have spoiled me. Who knows…

Interminable. No, at this point I’m just watching because there’s only one episode (and the special episode) left, but oh gods… the pacing for this show is awful. Too slow, and things barely happened. The political intrigue wasn’t really mentioned in this episode…

The story had the potential of being interesting, and I wanted to know how things ended for the protagonists in their first life, and how they would end up being together with the issue of one of them being a ghost in the present, but it really felt like it dragged too much. There were interesting conflicts that could have been explored in more detail, like the class one as an obstacle between Khun Yai and Kaewta. I don’t love the evil and possessive not-sister either, sigh. And now I have a feeling that the ending is going to be rushed and unsatisfying…

Again, Billy and Babe were so pretty in this, but agh. And I really want to know, just as with Me and Thee, if it’s a source material issue or an adaptation issue. But I don’t want to start new books before finishing Panguan and SVSSS and Counterattack ToT, so we’ll see.

Goddess Bless You From Death. I don’t have much to say this week about this one. I’m still enjoying it, it’s still scary at times, and the resolutions are close, I can feel it. I’ve seen people complain about the incompetent police and how inefficient the investigations and procedures seem, and I’m here, thinking in mexican: lolololol. The police is efficient somewhere? That sounds fake, but sure.

Burnout Syndrome. I am loving how fucked up the relationships in this one are. I enjoy every time the characters make terrible decisions, and all the thoughts and feelings it leaves me with. All the conversations about art, all the symbolism… It’s the artsy thing I’ve always been drawn to, honestly.

I love the intensity and the frustration the characters face. And visually, it’s just gorgeous. Really, I just hope the resolution isn’t too simplistic, though… please, let the resolution to the conflicts be satisfying and complex.

Dare You To Death. I skipped this week’s episode. I don’t know if I want to catch up lol.

KinnPorsche.
Slowly making progress. I can see why it’s a favorite of the Thai BL fandom. So far, I’ve liked it, and I think it’s going to be among my favorites, too.

The Long Ballad. We’re back, baby!

Runaway.
No progress, but I really need to make an effort to watch during the day so the ghosts (no matter how fake they look) don’t end up haunting my nights.
