I’ve been thinking about the nature of fear lately. Which medium do you find more effective at creating a sense of dread? Is it the visual horror in movies and games, where you see a specific monster or character design? Or is it horror literature, where your mind is forced to imagine the terror based only on words? Personally, as someone who works with physical forms, I find that a well-designed character can haunt you for a long time. But I'd love to hear your thoughts on where 'true' fear lives for you."

My sister and I love these types of movies

We watched Tarot (2024), Talk to Me and Truth or Dare, we plan on watching The Friendship Game next

We need more for the movie night later (it was our day off and we wanted to lounge and scream)

The curse could be a cursed object, a game or a ritual

I had that doctor’s appointment this morning. He didn’t even do an exam/swab, just had me tell him again the same things I told the nurse in yesterday’s messaging spree and prescribed me Fluconazole tablets. Two. Take one today and one in four days. Which naturally necessitated a trip to the Pharmacy. I took the first pill as soon as I got back to the car.

I did a load of laundry, hand-washed dishes, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, and scooped kitty litter. I placed two orders, including Chewy. Pip’s supper was leftover chicken so no cooking, yay!

I decided to hit my own cupboard for today’s tea, The Republic of Tea’s Orange Spice (green tea blended with oranges and spices, which tells me exactly nothing new o_O). I was worried it would be strong because of the spice part, but I was reminded just how weak green tea is.

I handwrote ~2,300 words on my [community profile] smallfandombang fic!! I was on a roll, and I can hardly believe it! And I even read more in Husband Material.

I also watched the Bills game, which was a heartbreaker. So close, and yet so far. They did it to themselves, though, so Denver deserved the win as much as I hate to say it. Interceptions and penalties are not going to win you the game. Congratulations, [personal profile] mistressofmuses!

Temps started out at 25.7(F) and reached 36.5. We were supposed to get less than an inch of snow, but got a bit more than that, with more expected overnight. Yay.

Mom Update:

Mom sounded okay when I talked to her; she actually sounded a bit tired. She said she had mostly felt well during the day, but at that moment was feeling a little off. Both Sister A and S were visiting, so that was nice.

I feel like the movie has some true potential, especially since the cinematography was really cool for the kind of boring subject. But it was hard to follow, and the coolest aspects (the field removing traces when a character tries to mark a way back for example) were underdeveloped. The villian was ok, but he lacked motivation, which stems from the fact that the field lacks motivation. Why are these things happening? And I feel like the end sucked. That they finally found the „path“ of choices that leads to them never entering the field in this first place seems ok storywise, but also it also feels cheap. Rather would have had them reenter despite the kids pleads.

Snake beans from the garden. Garlic, black bean chilli paste, soy sauce, and some water to steam. Add salt before the end.

So good!

I distinctly remember reading of a trilogy of fairly low budget robot horror movies, from I believe the fifties. I can't remember any of their names however! It's driving me up a wall. What makes me more annoyed is I know I have at least one tab with them, but I'm someone that has thousands of tabs so it doesn't help much. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, thank you sincerely.

I don’t mean like in Hereditary, which I love. I mean like “oh shit, something is really wrong here.” For example:

In the Nighthouse- when they find that weird doll in the other house

The Autopsy of Jane Doe - When they realize her body seems recently deceased but her eyes suggest she’s been dead for days

The Ritual- When they realize the deer in the tree is still bleeding meaning the thing that killed it is close by

Also The Ritual- when they go upstairs in the house and find that creepy as fuck statue thing

Event Horizon - When they realize the original crew wasn’t saying Save Us From Hell but they were saying Save Yourselves From Hell

I think I’m looking for something supernatural but it doesn’t necessarily have to be. What I really want is a movie that has a very specific “point” where the characters realize they’re dealing with something very disturbing that they weren’t prepared for if that makes sense.

EDIT: First, thank you to everyone for all these awesome recommendations! I want to clarify something though, I think I didn’t make my post super clear so my apologies for that. I am looking for something that has ONE clear turning point, I used those examples because that’s when the characters realize “I’m not dealing with something normal here.” Speak No Evil is a good example of it being a specific moment that isn’t supernatural when the kid opens his mouth and you see his tongue was cut out it really SHOULD make the dad realize oh shit something really sinister is happening here, but he’s an idiot so it’s really more for the audience lol.

I’m sorry if this still isn’t making sense, and while all the recommendations are great, a lot of them have multiple points, or are just pure dread (which I still love).

I love the idea of something happening that’s creepy or weird, but the last thing the characters expect is something supernatural or supremely evil. It doesn’t necessarily happen in the middle of the movie either, it’s just the “turning point” for how the characters will act the rest of the movie.

Another example is The Orphan, when she takes off her ribbons. Adversely, The Orphan: First (American) Kill when Julia Stiles reveals she’s also a big baddie which is an absolutely brilliant twist, but not really what I’m looking for.

Again, I love all these recommendations because I love all things horror, so please keep em coming even if you’re not sure. Sorry to ramble!

Is Samson's reversal permanent or will the effect wear off?

I'd like to see what happened to the pregnant woman from the farm. She really did just disappear into the night.

What an absolutely amazing game. Feels like Bloober team finally found their footing, where they don't just create atmosphere but can also create good gameplay. They already showed signs of it with the Sh2 remake, but with it being just that, a remake, I wanted to see their next original game to see how they would handle that, and they more or less aced it.

It's so clearly inspired by Dead Space with the body horror. To still be a bit unique it doesn't have the same limb-cutting gimmick, but instead you neer, or well "need", to burn the bodies of fallen enemies because if living enemies get close, they absorb the dead enemies power and becomes double as dangerous. I usually wait for them to start absorbing enemies to burn them, just to feel like I'm not wasting the burn fuel. It also stuns the monster.

After the disappointment that the Catalyst Protocol was, this is so nice to play.

I’m trying to remember a movie

Edit: It’s “The Breach”

The movie is Lovecraftian. It starts with a small town sheriff finding a body in a canoe. I can’t remember if the body was bloodless, inside-out, or both. Anyways, the sheriff, a woman, and another man all go out to an island that is across from the small town and find an abandoned house. There they find out about an experiment to another dimension. The other man becomes possessed technically and then is body loses blood/turns inside-out (still can’t remember which) and he becomes this creature. Then other creatures just like it come from the woods and the sheriff and the woman have to fight them off. It ends with the sheriff dying and the woman becoming possessed.

Any ideas?

Bone Lake (2025)

Just watched Bone Lake (2025) now that’s on Netflix (U.S.) and couldn’t find an official discussion even though I thought it was in theaters and I missed it. Thought it was a bit clunky at times but I love campy slasher flicks and thought the third act delivered on that front. Also really enjoy a movie where characters you think are hopeless canon fodder suddenly lock in and fight back surprisingly well. Some great gore and practical effects on display too. Overall I thought it was a solid 3.5/5 campy horror movie to watch late night on a Saturday after a few small beers. Would love to hear thoughts from anyone else who saw it when it first came out and anyone who is just now seeing it on streaming.
