Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

My favourite trope is pining, because it can lead to easily resolvable angst and heartbreak. I like when characters stoically pine from afar without feeling of entitlement. I like when characters have very good reasons to expect their feeling to be unrequited (and happily proven wrong).

My current fandom Conclave (2024) is ripe for pining when the main characters are all Catholic priests and nuns,  who swear vows of chastity. So much delicious angst: do you want to break your lifelong vow? Do you really want to tempt your love interest from breaking their vow? Do they want to? Not to mention the power difference between the pope/cardinals; superiors/subordinates. So ripe for pining!

The annual Three-Sentence Ficathon is underway; you can find the prompt post here! This is my favourite fandom event of the year; it's always a blast.

Of course, this time, I've been neck-deep in a specific fandom when the ficathon has rolled around. I apologise to everyone for turning every prompt into an excuse to write for the Goes Wrong Show.

I've got a few ficlets from elsewhere I haven't yet posted here, so I'll share those before launching into the ficathon:

Final Fantasy XIII, Lightning/Snow, 330 words, prompt: missing Serah. )

Taskmaster, s20 cast, 120 words, prompt: pirate AU. )

Danganronpa, Komaeda/Kokichi, 350 words. )

Deltarune, Kris and Noelle, 500 words, prompt: the Snowgrave porch visit. )

Hundred Line/Danganronpa, Yugamu/Komaeda, 150 words, NB sexual surgery. )

And now for the actual [community profile] threesentenceficathon fills!

Assorted ficlets for the Goes Wrong Show, Robert and Chris, 450 words total. )

Most of these are actually three sentences, for a change! We'll see whether that lasts.

Snake beans from the garden. Garlic, black bean chilli paste, soy sauce, and some water to steam. Add salt before the end.

I distinctly remember reading of a trilogy of fairly low budget robot horror movies, from I believe the fifties. I can't remember any of their names however! It's driving me up a wall. What makes me more annoyed is I know I have at least one tab with them, but I'm someone that has thousands of tabs so it doesn't help much. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, thank you sincerely.

I don’t mean like in Hereditary, which I love. I mean like “oh shit, something is really wrong here.” For example:

In the Nighthouse- when they find that weird doll in the other house

The Autopsy of Jane Doe - When they realize her body seems recently deceased but her eyes suggest she’s been dead for days

The Ritual- When they realize the deer in the tree is still bleeding meaning the thing that killed it is close by

Also The Ritual- when they go upstairs in the house and find that creepy as fuck statue thing

Event Horizon - When they realize the original crew wasn’t saying Save Us From Hell but they were saying Save Yourselves From Hell

I think I’m looking for something supernatural but it doesn’t necessarily have to be. What I really want is a movie that has a very specific “point” where the characters realize they’re dealing with something very disturbing that they weren’t prepared for if that makes sense.

EDIT: First, thank you to everyone for all these awesome recommendations! I want to clarify something though, I think I didn’t make my post super clear so my apologies for that. I am looking for something that has ONE clear turning point, I used those examples because that’s when the characters realize “I’m not dealing with something normal here.” Speak No Evil is a good example of it being a specific moment that isn’t supernatural when the kid opens his mouth and you see his tongue was cut out it really SHOULD make the dad realize oh shit something really sinister is happening here, but he’s an idiot so it’s really more for the audience lol.

I’m sorry if this still isn’t making sense, and while all the recommendations are great, a lot of them have multiple points, or are just pure dread (which I still love).

I love the idea of something happening that’s creepy or weird, but the last thing the characters expect is something supernatural or supremely evil. It doesn’t necessarily happen in the middle of the movie either, it’s just the “turning point” for how the characters will act the rest of the movie.

Another example is The Orphan, when she takes off her ribbons. Adversely, The Orphan: First (American) Kill when Julia Stiles reveals she’s also a big baddie which is an absolutely brilliant twist, but not really what I’m looking for.

Again, I love all these recommendations because I love all things horror, so please keep em coming even if you’re not sure. Sorry to ramble!

Is Samson's reversal permanent or will the effect wear off?

I'd like to see what happened to the pregnant woman from the farm. She really did just disappear into the night.

What an absolutely amazing game. Feels like Bloober team finally found their footing, where they don't just create atmosphere but can also create good gameplay. They already showed signs of it with the Sh2 remake, but with it being just that, a remake, I wanted to see their next original game to see how they would handle that, and they more or less aced it.

It's so clearly inspired by Dead Space with the body horror. To still be a bit unique it doesn't have the same limb-cutting gimmick, but instead you neer, or well "need", to burn the bodies of fallen enemies because if living enemies get close, they absorb the dead enemies power and becomes double as dangerous. I usually wait for them to start absorbing enemies to burn them, just to feel like I'm not wasting the burn fuel. It also stuns the monster.

After the disappointment that the Catalyst Protocol was, this is so nice to play.

Accidentally got desperately earwormed by a random vtuber/pngtuber who does super queer fantasy/horror covers and animatics. This is how I'm starting 2026.

  • Another Love Story by RafScrap ft Lyra Pyon — Look, I'm just saying I need the Princess Principal AMV to this immediately. Or like fifteen things with this vibe? I know that "Villain is violently murdered and then comes back to romance/'romance' the protagonist" is the plot of a bunch of villainess isekai and danmei, but what if more. (I've still not read Heaven Official's Blessing, but genuinely the thumbnail looks like monster!Hua Cheng fanart I've seen.)
  • Masochism Tango covered by Rafscrap and Gezeus Quiryst — WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU MADE A HORNY VERSION OF A TOM LEHRER SONG. THAT'S ILLEGAL. WHAT ARE YOU DOING. ... It's going on my Disaster Lesbian Who Flirts With Every Woman Who Tries To Kill Her playlist though. For obvious reasons. (The obvious reasons also explain why I saw so many comments being like "Gomez and Morticia Addams ♥".)
  • Monster High's Fright Song covered by RafScrap ft. Gezeus Quiryst & Mortius — Did everyone know that Monster High had a song? Did I just miss that one?
  • The Serpent and the Starving Girl by Rafscrap — I'm 90% certain this song/animatic is "What if a gay devil tempts a woman who was cast aside by her duplicitous married lover during the Salem Witch Trials" and I'm... More into it than I expected? The way the rage cracks out over "Didn't he promise" is fantastic.
  • Monster covered by Rafscrap and Gezeus Quiryst — I spent a solid two hours doing a dance party/tidying spree to this one song because it's got the right energy level for it. I'm also irrationally convinced that the originally song was a voicaloid song (based on the only other song I know by Kira being vocaloid; sorry Kira), so that would explain some of the scanning/syllable stressing going on.
  • Goddess covered by Rafscrap — I really like the rhythm of chanting the goddesses' names, ngl. And even if I have no idea what is going on with the story, I'm enjoying the art and the body horror!
  • Hell Again by Ironmouse — And just for the sake of this post not being one person: a different vtuber! XD I was watching the video like "Damn, this looks like RWBY," and then according to the comments the lead artist actually worked on RWBY. Yeah, fair, I guess that would do it! And would explain the fights looking pretty good!

I’m trying to remember a movie

Edit: It’s “The Breach”

The movie is Lovecraftian. It starts with a small town sheriff finding a body in a canoe. I can’t remember if the body was bloodless, inside-out, or both. Anyways, the sheriff, a woman, and another man all go out to an island that is across from the small town and find an abandoned house. There they find out about an experiment to another dimension. The other man becomes possessed technically and then is body loses blood/turns inside-out (still can’t remember which) and he becomes this creature. Then other creatures just like it come from the woods and the sheriff and the woman have to fight them off. It ends with the sheriff dying and the woman becoming possessed.

Any ideas?

Bone Lake (2025)

Just watched Bone Lake (2025) now that’s on Netflix (U.S.) and couldn’t find an official discussion even though I thought it was in theaters and I missed it. Thought it was a bit clunky at times but I love campy slasher flicks and thought the third act delivered on that front. Also really enjoy a movie where characters you think are hopeless canon fodder suddenly lock in and fight back surprisingly well. Some great gore and practical effects on display too. Overall I thought it was a solid 3.5/5 campy horror movie to watch late night on a Saturday after a few small beers. Would love to hear thoughts from anyone else who saw it when it first came out and anyone who is just now seeing it on streaming.

There are so many tropes that I love but I'll try to narrow it down, though I'm sure I will forget a couple.

Amnesia: I lean toward partial amnesia rather than complete, but I'll read both! There's something really appealing about a character trying to figure out what has changed in their life since the last thing they remember, especially when it comes to the love interest. Seeing them look at a relationship with new eyes or try to struggle to remember the already established one gives me both angst and humorous possibilities, both which I enjoy. And I love it from the other side too! Where the LI wants them to remember but also wants to help them heal at their own pace (while pining!).

Canon Divergence/Fork In the Road: There are always points in canon, or even pre-canon, where I wonder 'what if x had happened instead of y' and it's just interesting to explore the possibilities.

Fake Dating/Relationship/Marriage of Convenience: Whether it is for something low stakes like needing a date for a wedding or trying to escape the "helpful" matchmaking of friends/relatives or a little more high stakes like going undercover, this trope is just fun and full of pining, angst, and potential for others, like misunderstandings and accidental love confessions. All of which I enjoy. I like it when one half of the ship has feelings or both have feelings and think that this is all they can ever get. Or when they don't even consider each other and slowly fall for one another while they're "pretending". This extends to marriages where the ship gets married for "reasons" and then just doesn't want to divorce but thinks the other one doesn't want that.

18. It’s Sunday – what was the best part of last week?

Last week wasn’t eventful. So yesterday when hubby said let’s go to Chili’s for lunch I jumped at his idea. It was 73° and sunny. Perfect day for a drive and lunch. We both had the triple fajitas. Beef, shrimp, and chicken. Everything was melt in your mouth tender. We both loved our choices. Then we drove around some more. I came home and whipped up a little story. It was a good day.

[community profile] fandomtrees pulled through with reveals this weekend! I got an adorable harried spider prepping for the holidays, a lovely crop of Discworld icons from illustrations and movie adaptations, and the cozy Elis & John AU of my dreams.

I left some recs/recipes, but my creative endeavors this time around were limited to this:

[personal profile] sysann requested, among many other fun crossover ideas, a Dragaera/Ghosts UK crossover wherein the Dragaerans find themselves in Button House. Here’s what I wrote:

(If you’re not familiar with Dragaera, all you need to know is that Aliera is a particularly haughty member of a Proud Warrior Race who are en masse extremely touchy about their honor and love to fight duels about it. She is sensitive about her height and levitates to appear taller, and her normally-green eyes turn blue when she’s angry.

If you’re not familiar with Ghosts UK, all you need to know is that Thomas is the ghost of a (bad) Regency era poet, who is an oblivious romantic who died in a duel over a lady’s honor.)

Dragaera/Ghosts UK, Thomas Thorne, Aliera e’Kieron, terrible poetry )

 1-State of the Phnee

Holy Hannah, I am TIRED, and it’s going to get worse before it gets better. I woke up on time for the threshing session and managed to stay alert and pay attention for the whole two hours of discussion. It was the usual blend of informative and frustrating, the way all group discussions tend to be for me. I’ve found lately that I don’t have as much patience as I used to for listening to people who don’t listen to instructions or speak only to repeat the same thing four other people have already said or to only talk about themselves when the subject matter is about a much larger issue.

This is not a flex, as the youths say these days, it’s a character flaw that I am working to correct in myself. I need to find more compassion and understanding and make space for people who are interacting with the world in a way that I think is incorrect. I recognize that this is an example of rigidity in my thinking, but I’m having trouble with the praxis part of things these days. I don’t have the emotional reserves to hold that much space for people I don’t know well and who are getting under my skin for their perceived flaws. Work in progress, I guess.

I got the announcements done for tomorrow’s Quaker Meeting, and since no one from M&C has volunteered to be the Greeter, I will have to forgo most of my sleep tomorrow in order to get up in time for the start of Meeting. If I’m lucky I may manage to get a one hour nap before Meeting, and then I will have to be awake for the rest of the day until I get home around 08:00 Monday morning. I will have to invest in some caffeine, I think, to make sure I get through my shift and also don’t kill myself accidentally while driving home. It’s not ideal.

Speaking of work, there is a mandatory all-staff meeting on Monday at 13:30, because of course there is. So that means even less sleep, since that’s the time when I would have been recovering from my night shifts. *sigh* It’s a meeting addressing government cuts and what’s called “Work Force Adjustment,” which is the government’s fancy way of saying “layoffs.” This doesn’t affect me directly, as WFA only applies to indeterminate employees and I am a term employee. They can simply not renew my contract, and it ends there, whereas an indeterminate employee subjected to WFA is subject to different regulations and still has some rights. Still, it will be interesting to see what our execs have to say, since they swore up and down that they would be addressing budget shortfalls without resorting to cutting positions, and I am quite sure that that was horseshit. I am cynically curious as to how they are going to spin this.

In unrelated news, I have been putting off three things of varying levels of importance because they all involve having to make phone calls to people I don’t know. The least important is calling a local(ish) hairdresser to address the absolute disaster that my hair has become in the past year (it’s been at least that long since my last cut, and our well water is very hard and does my poor hair no favours). I also need to make a long overdue dentist appointment and am hoping to find someone local(ish) so I don’t have to drive all the way to Ottawa every time I need to get work done. I haven’t been to the dentist in a long time and am quite sure that my teeth are… not in great shape. I had a referral years ago to a periodontist for receding gums, and since I didn’t have $10,000 at the time to spend on treatment (still don’t), I can only imagine things have gotten worse since then.

Last but not least I need to make an appointment with my doctor. She and several other doctors left the clinic where I was a patient for over 10 years without so much as a by-your-leave, moved even further west from where I live (so that now it will take me at least an hour and a half to drive there), and are now charging an arm and a leg for a bunch of services they used to offer for free at my previous clinic. I was never offered the option of staying with my previous clinic, which is very frustrating, and now I can either pay out the nose and individually for things like forms and faxed prescriptions or pay a yearly “flat fee” for the privilege of accessing medical services. I fucking hate the slow creep of privatization in our healthcare system, it SUCKS. And of course when they moved their booking system was down for nearly six weeks and I can’t even access it without having to call first. I was supposed to get an appointment six weeks after my surgery, but since there was no way to contact them (no phone, no online system), it’s now been three months with no follow-up to make sure that, for instance, my blood pressure medication doesn’t make me violently ill the same way it did to KK. *sigh*

If I had even a little bit more energy (and a lot less anxiety!) I’d consider running for office, because things have absolutely gone to shit in this province and if I’m going to bitch about it I should probably try to do something about it. Of course, I don’t think I’d win. I am a terrible public speaker with the charisma of a boiled potato. However, I feel like the effort needs to be made in some way. Of course, I’d probably have to go and lock down all the fanfiction I wrote all those years ago, which all seems like a lot of work. ;)

2-State of the smallholding

The water heaters I got for the quail somehow got unplugged, so the poor things had no water when I check them this morning—everything was completely frozen over. I plugged everything back in and added some fresh water to tide them over while I waited for everything to melt again. I have no idea how it got unplugged—the only explanation I can think of is that I must have accidentally pulled on the extension cord when I was changing out the food and water at some point.

Sometime tomorrow I also need to make a point of putting out all the paper and cardboard recycling as well. I missed the last collection day, and things have really started to pile up.

There isn’t much else going on right now. I’ve been very passively trying to think of how to get help with “farming” things now that KK appears to have more permanently injured herself. She’s looking into getting herself both a walker and a motorized scooter to help her get around outside the house, and whereas in the past she was able to at least walk over to the garage to turn the light for the quail on and off and sometimes even check their water and food levels, she now either can’t or won’t do it. That means that when I’m working evening shifts or weekend night shifts, or in cases when I’m visiting my parents in Montreal, I will need to find someone else to come look after the quail and eventually the other animals I want to get. The original plan was that I was going to be primarily responsible for all the smallholding stuff, but that KK would be my backup on the rare occasions I wasn’t available or if I was ever ill. Obviously that’s no longer the case, so I need to find a new solution for that problem.

3-State of the news

There hasn’t been anything really new since my last post, just updates on the current (very) long list of global garbage fires. Greenland, Ukraine, Iran, Palestine… it’s a depressingly long list, really.

Our Prime Minister is now in Doha, talking trade with Qatar of all places. After China, I suppose it wasn’t that big of a stretch for him to decide that we can absolutely ignore all those pesky human rights violations and atrocities if it means making the big bucks. *sigh* I was already side eyeing the deal with China a little bit, but Qatar is in a league of its own when it comes to human rights violations. I remember the horror stories that came out during the last FIFA cup, and I am disappointed but not surprised that our PM continues to prove himself a Conservative wrapped in a Liberal trenchcoat.

Okay, time to get some other stuff done. I have to figure out a reading for tomorrow’s Quaker Meeting, and then if there’s time I have some personal projects I want to work on. I need to write up the background for my new D&D character, and I’m also working with some other people on a Soopar Seekrit Prodgikt which could possibly turn into a TV show (probably not, but the chances are not zero), so I have some writing to do this week.

Catch you on the flip side, friends!
