I’d seen it discussed and I thought I’d give it a try. Promising premise but meh. I didn’t really care for it. Like someone else it felt clunky.

I did finish watching it because I wanted to see how it ended. But it was definitely a one and done watch. Not worth watching again for me anyway. YMMV.

I used one of my Christmas gift cards to order a 12" carbon steel frying pan. I have a cast iron one but it is very heavy. I don't need it often, but when I do I'm always worried I'm going to drop it when it's full of hot food and I have to transfer it from stove top to oven or broiler, or vice versa. So we'll see how the carbon steel pan goes. I love the one I have for crepes, but it is much smaller and flatter.

It was top of mind this weekend because I decided to make this skillet chicken parm, but I was able to use my 10" (enameled) cast iron pan for it, which is more manageable, since I only had 2 chicken breasts. And it was pretty good! I made the Marcella Hazan simple tomato sauce for it and it worked out well. It's definitely easier than breading and frying a bunch of cutlets, and it gives a decent approximation of the best bits, which are the breading and cheese and sauce all melding together.

Then today I made this slow cooker creamy lemon chicken and it was okay - needed more lemon, imo, and also after reading the comments, I was prepared and added more cornstarch when the sauce didn't thicken much. I also thought it was weird that they want you to brown the chicken in butter first, but not saute the shallot and garlic. I didn't bother with searing the chicken, since generally I don't bother when I'm using the slow cooker, but I did saute the shallot and garlic first and added the dried herbs and let them sizzle for about 30 seconds before removing the pot from the stove and fitting it into the Instant Pot.

So it's been nice and cozy in here while the weather has been stupidly cold. Sadly, I have to go to a conference on Tuesday, when the high is supposed to be like 20°F. The agenda sounds interesting but I already told my boss if it was snowing I was staying home, but I don't think I can bail if it's just super cold but clear and dry. Who runs a conference in New York in January!? This is the time of year to be someplace warm. (Not that they would pay for me to go to a conference someplace warm! We're not even paying for this one - the tickets are comped because our head of HR is moderating a panel.)

I'm just glad I don't have to go out tomorrow, when it will be messy.

It’s a decent body/infection horror. It’s definitely an original idea. And if you were a kid in the late 90s/early 00s, there’s a couple of jokes and easter eggs for you!

It reminded me of Evolution.

The Egyptian Film That Recorded a Real Curse

“He Returned to Take Revenge” is a banned Egyptian film, originally titled عاد لينتقم (ʿAad Le-Yantaqim)

Released on March 28, 1988

Many people have watched this movie without ever realizing the unsettling truth behind it.

While filming a scene involving the summoning of jinn, the director demanded absolute realism. He wanted the moment to feel authentic—unsettling, believable, alive. To achieve this, a spiritual practitioner known as El-Sayed El-Husseini El-Falaky السيد الحسيني الفلكي was brought to the set and asked to say a few meaningless words in front of the camera.

The cameras rolled.

And El-Husseini began to speak.

What no one realized—not the actors, not the crew, not even the director—was that he was reciting a full, perfectly executed incantation.

It was Al-Azima Al-Barhatiyya العزيمة البرهتية , a spell whispered about in occult lore, feared for its intensity and destructive power.

The words were real.

And they were recorded.

The scene made it into the final cut. The film was released to the public. Only later did the truth emerge.

Years passed.

In 2003, El-Sayed El-Husseini El-Falaky was found dead in his office. There were no signs of violence. No forced entry. No explanation.

Just one detail that unsettled everyone who saw the body:

His face was locked in overwhelming terror, as if, in his final moments, he was confronting something unseen—something that had come for him.

The case was officially registered against an unknown party.

A real story by the way !

So over at [community profile] fandomtrees, I made a book rec comment for someone, but I don't think I have one here (unless you read my profile),  so I figured I should post it here. I'll probably add to it if I remember any other favorites. They are not ordered in any particular order.

If I had to choose a single title as the "ultimate horror film," the answer is The Exorcist (1973).

It's considered the ultimate reference in cinematic horror because:

It's still scary today

It was shot like a great "serious" film, not just as a genre

It changed the way horror was made forever

It combines terror, drama, and universal themes

Immediately after, often cited as absolute masterpieces:

The Shining (Kubrick) – perfect psychological horror

Halloween (1978) – the model for all slashers

Psycho – the father of horror Modern

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre – raw and disturbing terror

Hereditary – the best modern horror film according to many critics

One of my favorite nightly games is Tubi Roulette and last night I closed my eyes and landed randomly on Tennessee Gothic.

It’s from 2019, there’s a lot going on here. Right off the bat, I maybe wouldn’t let anyone under 18 watch this with you. 🤣

The actress is named Jackie Kelly, she is great in this. I saw someone’s review and they said “even when she has her clothes on” and that made me laugh out loud.

There are like 17 different movies going on within this one movie. I don’t know how to explain that other to say it seemed like the movie became whatever genre they decided to make it that particular day of filming.

Most of this is like a “Dollar General ‘Near Dark’” but it goes in so many directions.

The soundtrack is hilarious. Sometimes it’s a complete knock off of Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, and then it’s a Springsteen knock off. It’s wild.

Still, all that said, I thoroughly enjoyed this insane, low budget ride that went basically all over the map.

Give this a shot if you’re bored. 🤣

Talk about your creative process.

Five years ago I'd have talked about volcanic islands rising out of the sea, and building causeways between them. A good premise or prompt would spark a snappy exchange between two characters, or a vivid little snapshot of background, or a moment of insight. I'd write them down as soon as I could.

Then I'd build on them, adding the line that followed on naturally, the reply that the other character would have to make, setting up the scene so that this moment could happen. And then I'd work out how they all related to each other, what order they came in. I'd consider what needed to have happened by the end of the story in order to make it satisfying, and I'd add a bit here and a bit there until my lonely archipelago had a fully functional infrastructure.

I am still trying to do this, but it's not working as well as it used to. A toddler who just doesn't go to sleep, a commute (once my best writing time) that's down to one day a week, and a dying laptop have all made writing hard, and frankly I'm just too tired a lot of the time.

But I am exploring other creative realms, and the one that's currently interesting me most - knitting - is about as different as you can get. You have to do that in the right order.

At the moment I'm trying to design my first pattern: a slipover. It's going to have to be a slipover because I only have five balls of this yarn. I bought it in a charity shop and the Internet has nothing to say about it. I am having to plan: to measure, to practise, to calculate. I can't just make it up as I go along. It is an alien process to me, but, rather to my surprise, I'm enjoying it. The secret is, I think, being just good enough to be able to do things that make all that interesting rather than tedious. By which I mean, cables. I really like cables. I'm even enjoying the tension square.

I was atop the first rise before the sun came up so I got to see this:

sunrise on a hillside

Worth it.:) It wasn't as cold as I'd feared, but there weren't many birds. I managed thirty-one species but few sparrows and no Acorn Woodpeckers - not a bird I often miss there - and numbers of each were low. Except California Quail; I saw two coveys of 10 plus, one at each end of the trail. So cute. There were also at least two Hutton's Vireos countersinging near the dip, with very different songs. They seems monotonous to me, but they were really going at it. The list: )

I try never to startle California Quail foraging in the trail, but this morning they kind of did it to themselves. I'd seen them on the lower trail and left them alone, but while I was standing on the upper trail, concentrating on listening for the California Thrasher, I heard a flurry of wings and calls. Apparently they'd come up the slope under cover of the brush and popped out on the upper trail ten or fifteen feet away from me. Unfortunately I didn't hear them arrive and must have flushed them when I moved. Or something. I certainly didn't see them after that.

I've been alerted to a hidden horror gem from India, which won the Guinness World Record for the longest film with an unbroken, unedited take at two hours and twenty minutes. I have been scouring all over trying to find a place where it's streaming or something, but I'm coming up blank. In the original post I discovered it from, the OP explained they saw it at a film festival recently. Anyone here also at that film festival who can give some news? Thanks!

I’m a little late to the party but I’ve just left the cinema. What a film.

Considering the nature of the film I didn’t expect to laugh as much as I did. Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell acted their asses off.

What were your verdicts? What are your predictions for the final film of the franchise?

Normally wifey and I turn something on to fall asleep to and she’s usually ko a few minutes after the movie starts, I follow after. But we ended up making it through the whole movie, me cuz I’m an Alison Brie fan and her because she got drawn in after seeing the dogs half fused. Great performances from both, would have been the movie that convinced me they were married irl if I didn’t know that already.

Most movies don’t make me make any real facial expressions and I was like this 😬😣😧 a lot. The school bathroom scene was hilarious and traumatic at the same time cuz my wife asks if I think I could handle that and it reminded me of when I zipped my tip one time when I was drunk and cried so, no. And the hair scene when they were sleep was so gross but also incredible and will stick with me forever. Not really a body horror fan and I thought this was really good. 10/10 most definitely.

Hi guys,

I'm in my 30s, and grew up during the 1990s.

For some reason I've been feeling super nostalgic for that decade. I watched my first horror movie in the late 90s - Scream- and it scared me to death (as a 10 year old!).

I know it's not seen as a "great" decade for horror, but what are some other great horror movies from the 90s - that are either great in their own right, or just super nostalgic for you?

I kind of mentioned it in the tail end of the pitch, "Oh yeah, this is where we're going in 25 issues." And Alex Ross was like, "Wait, wait, wait, wait, tell me more about this Mortal Thor thing." And he basically, on the spot, while he was designing all the stuff for Immortal Thor issue 1, he designed Mortal Thor and he was like, "Well, I think he should look like this." I'm just sitting there going, "Mm, yes, yes, keep talking. Everything you say is good." -- Al Ewing
