Writing, WIPs and

I've been commenting a bit over at [community profile] polyamships's NSFW 3 weeks 4 dreamwidth posts, and I thought I'd bring some of that over here, because I had more to talk about that wasn't about poly, but more about writing in general.

On the "current favorite poly ship" question I mentioned a ship that's been on my mind all through April - an original trio from an old origfic WIP I last worked on in 2018, and that took over significant parts of my brainspace again this April.

I'd been reading through my old origfic WIPs because March was the month when I suddenly had a lot of inspiration again for the sort of thing I used to write a lot of, back when I regularly wrote origfic - and then this one really hit me hard again.

The basic concept is a clan feud coming to an end when one side is brought down by a third party, and what happens between the survivors and their former enemies. The ship is a V, with siblings from one side and the third from the other. (Side question: am I the only one around here who likes V-shaped ships? They seem to be pretty unpopular in fandom.)

I wrote a significant chunk of this in 2017 and early 2018, and then didn't touch it again until 1st April this year, for reasons I'm not entirely clear on, though falling into Guardian and cdramas in general probably played a part. *g* I have almost 60k now - but I guess if I ever do finish it in any meaningful way, it'll probably be at least 200k. What I have at the moment is basically the minidrama version: all the dramatic interpersonal moments; everything else more or less sketched in. To pull it off to full effect would take a lot of work! And maybe one day I'll manage that work - I do want to; I just don't have the time or energy I'd need. But in the meantime I've been having a lot of fun just adding more to that world and those characters' arcs.

I mean, really, a LOT of fun. My writing in April looked like this:

Writing stats April 2026: FFFX 12.82%, High Adrenaline 47.84%, poly OW 38.87%, other 0.46%

It's a very rare month when my writing is so concentrated on so few stories! But I had two unrevealed exchange stories to work on, where extensions gave me a lot more time to expand, rewrite, edit and improve - that got a lot of my focus. And then the rest of my brainspace got taken over by that WIP.

And then I was wondering how often that sort of thing happens to other people. So here's a poll for you:

aikido aikido aikido

1.
Apparently if you point a camera at me while I'm doing aikido my posture and form immediately improves, as my friend E discovered on Wednesday while we were practicing jujinage and she handed her phone to a dojomate who was sitting out that set.

This does not surprise me, because I'm generally quite camera-aware and will push for more clarity and precision of demonstration when it matters to show-case it and I'm not going "this is near the end of class and I'm tired".

Also we got some really nice photos out of it, including a couple where E's completely in the air such that there's the illusion that she's being held upright by her ponytail alone.

(she was taking breakfalls, thus the hovering in mid-air. I was not, but only because I didn't want to; it looked from the outside like I was because I was being thrown in a way that definitely encouraged it.)

2.
"Aikido can be very technical," sensei said near the start of the seminar today, and what she meant by that was rather "it's very easy to get caught up in Step 1, Step 2, Step 3 and forget that aikido is at its simplest and most fluid if you make a connection and simply move."

We spent a lot of time focusing on extension: keeping one's arm reaching out kokyu (that word/term which means breath, but which is also a description of keeping one's arm/body engaged without being stiff, of being strong and unbendable not by muscle tension but by structure and directional intent). Which is important, because it does make technique easier to apply, but sensei also pointed out that for all that she was asking us to think about our arms and our posture, the actual application only worked if our feet were in the right place at the right time.

I think the technique that most visibly established this was the one where she was like "okay, I'm showing you two variations" and then proceeded to be like "So yes, you can do this technique in a very straight-forward [literally] way. We're going to practice the variation that forces you to do interesting footwork as a way of ensuring you're thinking about that too." (I loved this technique. It looks funky—anything where you go back-to-back with your partner does!—but the flow was really lovely once I got a chance to try it. Really did rely on the footwork being accurate, though!)

The whole seminar was really nice for just... being in the mix of a lot of yudansha [black belts] who I know from the seminar circuit and thus getting to be like "yup, definitely know plenty of stuff and have even more to learn".

Also fun: sensei deciding that we all needed to do some rolling practice and making everyone go back and forth across the mat for a while.

The seminar just... generally focused on elements of aikido that I've been thinking about lately anyway, which was really nice. A lot about connection and smoothness and seeing how little muscle you need to use. The flow of the technique. Blending with your partner in the opening. Things like that.

And then, y'know, two dan tests from people who I know. Nidan and sandan. It's... mm. I'm taking nidan at the end of this month. I watched these tests (both by older white men who started as adults) and spent the whole time thinking oh, I could do that at least as well, probably better, which...

idk. I've probably been capable of testing a rank ahead of where I place since I took first kyu, and I'm pretty sure I took shodan later than I otherwise would've because of covid, so...

It's not surprising. It's just a fact.

I've done much less specific preparation for nidan than perhaps I could, but also, like, I do know everything on the test. The bits that I'm like "but I could know this better" aren't about what's necessary; they're about what I know I'm capable of, since I was basically taught the nidan test when I took shodan. But since whatever I do for the test will certainly be more than enough—people just don't test unless their sensei think they're ready—there's no need to stress about it.

3.
The thing about test prep class when everyone who's testing is at the skill level required is that it mostly turns into a confidence-building exercise, which comes across in some really different ways depending on who's there and who's testing soon.

It's... sometimes a frustrating thing to facilitate. (A thing I do whenever the friend who really wants to run it is having fatigue problems or is out of town for family reasons.) Mostly because I don't have anxiety about tests/performances/being watched doing stuff like this? And so I'm like "yeah this is going to be fun" as soon as I'm certain I know all the stuff required. Which is not usually a helpful attitude for people who do have more anxiety.

But hey, at the end of the day it's all just about encouraging people and reminding them of how much they already know, and I do like that part.

I've been thinking about trying the Oops! All AUs exchange by [personal profile] mdzsxchange  in May. It's kinda beckoning me to try it out but I've never done this kind of exchange before, so I'm pretty insecure about it. What with all the nomination stuff etc., and writing requests, though I've at least checked some of the older exchanges to see how these things look.

Well, there's still some time to think about it, I guess. And it's not super demanding in word count, I can do 1k for a lot of prompts, I think.

Still. I'm tempted, but also - should I really do that?

*

In other news, I'm a bit annoyed. I thought I had a beta for my smut WIP, we'd chatted at the beginning of the year and they affirmed that they'd be happy to beta it when I was ready. Well, I've been ready this past month but I can't get a hold of them. I've tried several tumblr DMs, I've tried email, and last week I finally tried a tumblr ask since tumblr DMs can be unreliable and sometimes don't show up with the alert even though the DM went through. No reaction on any of these. tumblr tells me they're only pretty much every day, though their main blog hasn't seen updates and two weeks or so. One of the posts indicates that they're back into an older (?) fandom and so it might be that they are using only sideblogs, which I don't know.

And by now, I just feel weird and stupid trying again and again, since IDK if they're really not seeing my messages or if they did and are like, "shit need to get back to her at some point" and forget, ooor if they're just irritated by me and are ghosting me. Though I hadn't taken them for acting like that; they struck me as someone who'd be fine telling me they've changed their mind, you know. (They had told me they couldn't beta my FTH fic last year because the timing was bad.)

I wasn't rude in the messages, and also said that it'd be fine if they can't do it anymore for whatever reason, but that an answer would be helpful. And I'm also quite sad because I found their comments very helpful in the past and just liked chatting with them.

But yeah, that leaves me in limbo with that fic currently, which is annoying.

I do have a beta through FTH but they'd already said that May - July is an extremely busy time for them, so I don't necessarily want to ask and be like, "heyyy I know we agreed on a different fic for this and you said now is a bad time, buuut..." Because I did get them for the arranged marriage AU that I want to finish this year, dammit, and the timeline for that being autumn would be great. And I also don't want to overdo it, as I don't know how many fics they would consider working on for FTH. But yeah, mainly it would be a bad time for them now.

Hmph. Currently, I'm kinda stuck with the smut fic - I've got the beginning (needs a bit of restructuring, but overall it's there), got the whole smut middle (done as it is), and I have part of the ending, but that's were I'm a bit stuck of how to wrap it up, what people might expect from this without the plot devolving into misunderstandings and being drawn out etc., but also needing to wrap it up in a serious manner because the background of this fic is very much dubcon territory.

Perhaps I'll end up asking in the comm for a beta. Just wanted to vent; it's been a bit of a bummer...

The irises in one flower bed have decided to bloom a full month early!

a photo of purple iris flowers

I love the color these ones are (the photo doesn't quite capture how they look - the top petals are an intense almost electric purple in person - similar to HEX #8400E0) and how fragrant they are!

first of may, first of may, outdoor fucking starts today. :D and it's actually spring out here (the pink trees in front of my building are SO FLUFFY) so you really can get busy outside if you so desire.

yale's beinecke library contains, among other extremely rare items of historical value, the bicentennial schlock collection, a random collection of odds and ends celebrating the us bicentennial. odds and ends like, say, a roll of toilet paper and dry cleaner hangers and hats and paper placemats and a tv guide and a, er, novelty condom. not stuff you'd automatically think had historical value, except that twenty-five years ago someone though it did.

and one last poem now that poetry month is over.

"I’m Dating a Man Who’s Married"

to a man who’s dating a man who’s
married to a woman. The husband

of the man I’m dating knows he’s
dating me and my boyfriend knows his

husband is dating the man who’s
married to the woman who does not

know her husband is gay. The guy
she’s married to—the boyfriend

of my boyfriend’s husband—just told
his mom he’s gay and she’s happy

because she never liked his wife
which is kind of funny but mostly

sad and I feel sad that her husband
who’s dating a man is also a man

with a mother who has never liked her.
I tell my boyfriend to tell his husband

to tell his boyfriend that he needs
to tell his wife sooner rather than later

and I know he knows that but still it needs
to be said. My boyfriend said his husband

said his boyfriend plans to tell his wife
Memorial Day weekend when his grown

kids are home from college and everyone,
I imagine, is eating potato salad by the pool.

She works at a flower shop two towns
over. I want to go there when she’s not

there and buy her flowers, leave a note
with her coworker at the counter:

You deserve happiness, Natalie.
You deserve love.

Love,

Your husband’s boyfriend’s
husband’s boyfriend.

if i wait long enough i'll forget everything i wanted to share. >.< so, a poem.

"This Evening Let’s"

not talk

about my country How
I’m from an optimistic culture

that speaks louder than my passport
Don’t double-agent-contra my

invincible innocence I’ve
got my own

suspicions Let’s
order restina

cracked olives and bread
I’ve got questions of my own but

let’s give a little
let’s let a little be

If friendship is not a tragedy
if it’s a mercy

we can be merciful
if it’s just escape

we’re neither of us running
why otherwise be there

Too many reasons not
to waste a rainy evening

in a backroom of bouzouki
and kitchen Greek

I’ve got questions of my own but
let’s let it be a little

There’s a beat in my head
song of my country

called Happiness, U.S.A.
Drowns out bouzouki

drowns out world and fusion
with its Get—get—get

into your happiness before
happiness pulls away

hangs a left along the piney shore
weaves a hand at you—“one I adore”—

Don’t be proud, run hard for that
enchantment boat

tear up the shore if you must but
get into your happiness because

before
and otherwise
it’s going to pull away

So tell me later
what I know already

and what I don’t get
yet save for another day

Tell me this time
what you are going through

traveling the Metropolitan
Express

break out of that style
give me your smile
awhile

Notes from a Regicide by Isaac Fellman was excellent. After being rejected by his biological father, Griffon, a trans boy, is adopted by Etoine and Zaffre Keming. They're artists and refugees from a city where a revolution failed.

I love fiction in the form of non-fiction. Here, Griffon writes Etoine and Zaffre's biography, based on Etoine's memoir. The prose is beautiful.

Griffon is a gay trans man. Etoine and Zaffre are T4T m/f. Etoine is a recovering alcoholic walking with a cane, Zaffre suffers from depression and sometimes hallucinations.

i worked from home today which meant i could sleep in and yet i could not. annoying. so i did the dishes instead of, you know, catching up on some delicious, delicious sleep. sigh. i don't think i'll ever be a morning person and i know i'm still a night owl - i mean i had to stay up last night and watch the lost boys - but man, who wouldn't rather sleep than wash dishes? right?

"The Imagination Completes Its Grand Circuit,"

sees my mother seated up in bed, unable to move

of her own accord, lips parched from medication,

she begins to sing, a chant, an Arab song,

from her childhood, eyes almost transparent.

My two aunts, or they would have been my aunts,

who died in infancy . . . from pneumonia? . . .

scarlet fever? . . . no one alive now knows.

What was, when my mother was a child, in the air

of the world’s most industrialized city? Blessings

and horrors, raw orange sunsets, that blue flame

burning is industry, the smell of incense rising

in the fabulous churches, Latin, Greek, Arabic, Aramaic

liturgies, descendants of inventors of alphabets.

After midnight humid and hot. The dead are wherever

we are. They’re not just details, these tears of bliss.

Survival’s what’s involved. Furious, the fate

that keeps watch. Everything’s something else and yet itself

at the same time. Home, you know? Everyone

and everything is related. Wet steel-blue morning, thin,

purple salvias near the backyard fence. Your Grandpa’s

dead, I, the baby, must have heard it said.

First, our little datacenter went down with a power issue overnight. We were down about 6 hours total, but things should be back up and running.  If you see any issues, please don't hesitate to contact us.

That said, it's a good time to address something in our Terms of Service. We invite you to use all of our services, and even suggest more services that we might be able to bring to the community. We prohibit the use of "Patreon" or "Ko-Fi" and other links within profiles, stories, etc., because doing so jeopardizes our 501c3 non-profit status with the government. I bring this up because this week we found someone was hosting drawings (NSFW and non-NSFW alike) on Squidge Images - which is fine. But, they were using said images on a Patreon, making people pay to see said images.

That's the clarification. You can use our services as you wish - but as it says in our Terms of Service that you cannot use it for moneymaking purposes. If you're going to run a Patreon campaign and charge people for access, Squidge can not be part of the conversation. You'll need to find elsewhere for hosting.

I'm going to add this, because I know someone is going to ask. If you're a commission artist and you want to host your stuff on Squidge Images, that's fine. But you cannot actively promote "pay to play" actions like Patreon or the like while using Squidge property because, as I said, it can jeopardize our non-profit status.

And if you're curious, when we found out about the Patreon thing, we gave the person 12 hours to clear out before we banned them. We're not animals here - we're people, just like you.

guy from the garage called me today to tell me that the part he ordered so he can fix my car? there aren't any in the us. (my response: "i'm going to swear." to be fair, he did say to the guy from the place where he tried to order it "it would've been nice if you'd told me this sooner.") so what does that mean? i ask. he says he's going to try and find said part secondhand. from a salvage yard, i guess. is this an improvement? i do not know. will i ever get my car back? i do not know that either. not by this weekend, that's pretty sure.

jesus christ. maybe i should start researching new cars after all.

the elevators keep going out in the ugly building where i work, to the point that there's only one that still works on my side of the building. (usually there are three.) this seems like a suggestion from the universe that i start taking the stairs.

world's longest tiramisu baked and assembled in london. it used 19,000 eggs and almost 120,000 ladyfingers and was 440m long (1445 feet). that is a lot of dessert. italian bakers made it in london to commemorate italy's friendship with the uk, and after it was certified as the longest tiramisu, it was cut into pieces and sold for charity. yum.

We were living in a blue room, somewhere near
the coast. The trees were tall and green as sleeping men,
bent against the wind. There were blackberries,
apple farms, roaring waves of storms. Long December
foghorn nights, the distant tinny ringing of a bell.
We watched the ships go by, the seagulls flock
and spread. We stayed up late and read Neruda
in the dark, returning every nerve. So close it seemed
the other person’s body was our own. Eyes for eyes,
hands for hands, waiting for the other one to come.
It wasn’t beauty but a lack of time. We saw the stars
dissolve, the shifting range of blues against the peaks.
Mountains in the distance. Black hills. Moon. There was
a time, a period of days and nights before the end.
We were living in a blue room, and we were happy.
