Sam stood in the doorway, watching unobserved as Dean picked up Maddie before her fussing could build into full blown cries. She latched on, little hands grabbing at his shirt, her face pressing into his chest as Dean stroked her back.

“Ssshhhh,” he said, swaying and bouncing ever so slightly in that way that instantly always soothed her. Sam had always wondered when Dean had learned to do it. From the moment Dean had stepped over the remains of that rakshasa, and Maddie’s entire family, he’d had no problems, just swept her into his arms and soothed her right down. Part sway, part jiggle, all Dean.

“Kn-kn-knockin' on heaven's door,” Dean started to croon, quietly and ever so slightly off key, his head bent so he was close to her ear.

Guns N' Roses. Sam was pretty sure it was the only thing Dean sang to her. And then only when he didn’t know Sam was there, when he didn’t think Sam could hear.

“Kn-knockin' on heaven's door.” Maddie snuffled slightly, her breathing evening out.

Dean was so good at this, parenting. But of course he was, Sam had given him a lot of practice when they were growing up.

“Kn-knockin' on heaven's door.” Dean continued with the chorus, his swaying turning him towards the doorway.

Quickly, before Dean realized that he’d been spying, Sam walked into the room. “Hey,” he whispered, a soft smile on his face. Dean smiled back, and then jutted his chin at Maddie, who’d fallen asleep. “Can I?” Sam asked, reaching out for her.

“Sure.” Dean handed her over carefully, and wrinkled his nose at her diaper.

“Oh sure,” Sam whispered, “Leave the dirty job to me.”

Dean snickered, but walked over to the changing table to help get out the supplies. He held up the almost empty bag of diapers and looked at Sam, eyebrows raised.

“Okay, okay. I said I would. I’ll stop and pick some up tomorrow.” Between the two of them they made short work of getting Maddie cleaned up and in a new diaper. She slept through the entire process. “Next size up, don’t you think?”

Sighing, Dean nodded, before turning to check the salt lines around the room while Sam settled Maddie back into her crib. They might not hunt anymore, but there was no excuse for not being careful. Not when they had so much to keep safe.
