Hmmm, I flitter in and out of fandoms and my tastes have changed through the years but the fics that are in my ereader app that I've reread most recently are:

Roadtrip Vigilantes (Batman AU) by Beabaseball- This is a 'What if Bruce didn't leave the league of Assassins but winds up adopting Dick anyway' story and hits so many great notes. Both Bruce and Dick are broken, but in different ways, and they slowly learn to trust and rely on each other all while fighting crime where ever they find it. There's no real canon knowledge needed for this other than the absolute basics of osmosis and maybe not even that.

In Defiance of Reason (Demon Alchemist series) (Fullmetal Alchemist AU) by metisket. Mestisket does great AUs (I also like their Teen Wolf one a lot). In this Ed wasn't able to attach Al's soul to the armor in time and doesn't deal well with his brother's death. There's great use of flashbacks and Roy's POV is really well done and it just seemed really plausible and worked quite well. (As does the whole series although I liked the ones with Maes' POV better than Ed's.) Basic knowledge of either FMA or FMA:B would be needed to read this.

On a Pale Horse (Captain America AU) by leveragehunters. Another great AU writer, in this fic Steve has been turned into a horse but it's only when member of the Horse Guard Bucky buys him that he learns to *be* a horse and then a person again. It's weird, but it works. This is probably far enough removed from canon it can be read as original fic.

The First Eight Don't Count (Losers AU) by storm_petrol. All of storm_petrol's Losers fics are amazing. This one has Jensen as a shifter who can turn into a cat. Not a scary, big cat, just a house cat. He'd always hidden the truth from everyone but wrestles with the idea of telling the team but worries what'd happen as a result. This one probably needs a little sense of canon to read?

I didn't mean for these all to be AUs. I do actually like and read a lot of regular fic?
